D.I.Y. Saturday #10 – Installing Stone Veneer Panels

Entry #223, July 24, 2010

At the beginning of the week I had Norstone on Stagetecture as my guest blogger.  Their beautiful natural stacked stone

Install a beautiful stone veneer wall in your home!

gave me the idea of seeing how to install stone veneer panels at your own home!  Stone as an accent wall, bathroom or kitchen wall is a beautiful addition to any room.  What appeals to me about stone is the warmth and natural rustic aesthetic it gives to any room.  Whether it is for a fireplace or a beautiful water feature, installing stone veneer panels will enhance your home for years to come.

I found some directions that look straightforward, and if you need more guidance watch the video below.

Do It Yourself has a complete list of items you will need:

What You’ll Need

  • Damp Rags
  • Thin Set Mix
  • Mortar Mix
  • Putty Knife
  • Premixed Grout
  • Grout Bag
  • Trowel
  • Table Saw
  • Sand Blaster

DIY Network has an article on how to install:

1.) Preparing the wall:

Prep the wall with drywall, making sure it’s sanded smooth

2.) Spreading thin set:

  • Spread a thin layer of thinset on the wall with a trowel as well as a thin layer on the back of the veneer panel .
  • Apply pressure to make sure panel is secure to the wall

TIP: Using larger 2×4 panels will add a unique look and save time on tiling over traditional smaller panels

3.) Cut Panels:

If you’re tiling around shower drains or fixtures, use tin snips to cut panels to fit.

4.) Applying grout (optional)

Once the tile is set, you can either let it dry or grout the entire surface. If you choose to grout the entire surface, apply grout with a float. Remove excess grout with a wet sponge.

Could you tell me the name of the panels shown in the photo above? Also, were they grouted?

I’m not familiar with what type of panels these are. I got this image from google.
