If your home is truly your castle, then isn’t it important that it’s properly protected? Beyond your run-of-the-mill burglar alarm, many homeowners today are choosing to build safe rooms to bring added security and peace of mind. These spaces, which can often be housed in already-existing rooms of most homes, serve as safe shelters against intruders and extreme conditions such as tornadoes or hurricanes.

What is a safe room?

Safe rooms, sometimes called “panic rooms,” run the gamut from simple shelters with basic supplies needed for survival to more elaborate sanctuaries equipped with high-tech amenities and all the luxuries of home. Here, we discuss important factors one should consider in implementing a safe room in their home, including location, key construction elements, upgrades, and stocking guidelines. Plus, we outline when and how you will know to head to safety in the room.
