Summer is coming to a close and just like the animals preparing their nests for the cold fall and winter months, we can prepare our homes. Home heating can quickly burn away those few extra dollars you have been trying to save and go green. Depending on your geographic location the fall months can mean using Solar Panel Installers for green home options to use the sun this fall, or in cold climates utilizing wood burning stoves.

Here are some tips to help make your home green and save some green during the colder months:
Install a programmable thermostat:
Programmable thermostats can be a little more costly upfront, but can help to drastically reduce your monthly energy costs. By shopping around you can find the best price and these thermostats can be found at almost any of your local hardware stores. Once your new thermostat is installed, you can set it so that your home remains cooler while you are away at work and warmer when you get home. Setting the thermostat between 65-70 degrees when you are away, and 70-75 when you are home can save you A LOT of money. After all, why heat your home when no one is there? You should also experiment with the temperature, see how low you can go and still remain comfortable.
Don’t use electric fireplaces as a primary heat source:
Portable, plug-in fireplaces are really trending right now. Due to the versatility and instant facelift that they can give a room, they will probably continue to grow in popularity. However, these beautiful fireplace accents should not be used as the primary heat source for your home or a room in your home. Electric heat is expensive! So enjoy the ambiance of your electric fireplace, but keep the heat dial turned off or to a minimum while in use.
Drapery – it’s pretty and practical:
Dressing your windows for winter can be fun and easy. Long drapery panels can instantly give a room a cozy facelift, and lined drapery panels block those cold drafts from entering a room ̶ working to keep the heat in and the cold out.
