Hanging Container Garden
Hanging baskets filled with flowers and foliage is a variation to container gardening. It will be a charming addition to your deck, arbor, patio, or porch. You can use rattan baskets, wire baskets, pottery containers, or plastic hanging planters for this purpose. Choose plants that will tend to trail downward or mound rather than growing upright. Keep in mind that the watering schedules will be different depending on the types of containers and plants. If you can maintain them properly, they will remain lush and thriving all season long.

Create a Balance
If you have a tile or brick made pavement leading to your house, you can place terra cotta made pots with plants on the two sides of it. The terra cotta pots will reflect the brick or tiles of the paving. Do not overwhelm the place with a number of different plants and many small pots and planters. You can plant only flowers in these pots too. However, in that case, make sure that they are backed by some overhanging trees behind them.

Create an Impact with Group Pots
Instead of scattering individual containers around your pavement or porch, create a more integrated design with grouping of containers. You can add a real drama to the entrance if you plant similar plants in the containers. Even if the plants are not of the same species, implant flowers or foliage of similar tones. Enhance the dramatic effect by choosing similar containers but with varying heights. Place them on the two sides of the stair to the porch.
Color & Size of Containers
The color and size of the containers also play a huge role in creating a particular style. For example, tall containers of similar color placed in a line are very effective in creating repetition – one of the common features of contemporary garden style. Such a style works well in smaller spaces because it can make a place appearing wider and longer. The effect can be achieved better by using identical plantings. On the other hand, a contrasting effect can be created by planting stark white or bright plants in dark-colored pots.

Now-a-days, container gardening has become central to the designs rather than just an ornamental additions. It will be really beautiful if you can match the design of containers and the style of planting to the exterior of your home.
