Our family pets have a place in our home just like our family members. Just like safe housing your home for your children, there are precautions to take to ensure a safe home for your pets. It does not matter whether your pets are kept indoor, outdoor or they can freely access the whole area at home. The important thing is the safety of your home anywhere your pet decides to roam.
To keep your home pet-friendly, here are tips to help:
- Keep your garden and household chemicals out of their reach. It would be better if you have a safety cabinet to place all hazardous chemicals and solutions.
- Always have clean water available. Avoid using an open container for your pet’s water supply since it would be a great breeding area for mosquitoes, algae and bacteria.
- Secure your fences so your pet has no chance to run off. You also have to check for sharp edges in your fence.
- Vacuum regularly. The hair of your furry and feathered friends has to be vacuumed twice to thrice a week, especially in the furniture. To lessen this, train them to shed off where it is acceptable. A dirty surroundings is not only bad for your health but also for your pets. Stain-resistant fabrics that do not collect pet hair should be chosen for your furniture.
- Washables on the bed will not prevent you from bringing and playing with your pet in your room. To hide the pet hair, cover your mattress with thick pad and use cotton bed sheets.

- Avoid carpet. Though it is soft and wonderful, carpet sucks up odor and traps pet hair and stains. But if you really want to have a carpet, then choose threadlike carpets which is easier to clean.
- Hard surface floors are best when you have pets. Be aware that dogs might scratch the floor and having hard surface floors may help lessen their desire to scratch the surface. For cat owners consider buying furniture that is pet friendly – tweed, durable leather and heavy cotton or slipcovers are helpful.
- Bathe and groom pets often. Keeping your pets clean will help your house to stay clean. They should be bathed once a week with appropriate shampoo. Keep their nails short. And let their teeth be cleaned twice a year.
- Give your pets shade and enough sunlight. Make sure there is a place for them to get out of the sun and the heat periodically throughout the day.
