When we think of sleeping in our bedrooms we never think about what type of snooze style we have. Most of us have woken from a deep sleep to find ourselves twisted into a strange position, usually having no idea how we got there. The various poses we take when we’re out for the night can say something about our health and personalities in general. Let’s look at some of the most common sleeping positions and what they may mean in relation to wellness.
What Does Your Snooze Style Say About You?

Back Sleepers
Sleeping on your back can make you prone to snoring, scientists say, and is often the method by which sleep apnea is diagnosed. If you raise your arms above your head and tuck them under your pillow, a pose known as the “starfish,” you might be someone who is comfortable with yourself and feeling safe in your environment. This vulnerable sleeping position can indicate that you are a loyal friend and a good listener.
Fetal Position Sleepers
This most-common pose may indicate that you have a tough exterior but are really a softie. If you have restless leg syndrome, you also might feel most comfortable in the fetal position as you hold your twitchy legs. Women in particular strike this pose when asleep.

Stomach Sleepers
Many people prefer to sleep on their stomachs, usually with the arms tucked under their pillow and their head to the side. If this describes your preferred position, you might enjoy the benefits of better digestion. On the other hand, if your arms under your pillow raise your head up too much, you might end up with pain in your lower back.
Other Sleeping Positions and your Health
If you like to rest on your side with your arms straight out in front of you, it may be an indication you are cynical and like to hold people at an arm’s length. The “log” or “soldier,” when you sleep on your back with your arms rigidly at your sides can result in a night of poor sleep and a higher likelihood of snoring. Regardless whether you sleep on your back, front, or side, you need a good night’s sleep to perform at optimal levels at all times. Even the slightest bit of sleep deprivation can take its toll on your day. If you sleep deeply for a few hours but then are woken by noise, an active brain, or other stressors, the interruption can leave you crabby and slow moving when the morning comes.
Your sleeping position can indicate a lot about your personality and overall health. It can also be greatly influenced by the type of mattress you sleep on. By taking notice of your poses upon waking, you might be able to learn something about your general well-being.
