Decorations

Nothing says baby shower like a traditional diaper cake. And nothing says safari better than using jungle animals and animal print ribbon as diaper cake décor! Start by rolling several newborn stage diapers into tight rolls. Rubber band each diaper and stand them on end. Use as many diapers as you would like to achieve the size of diaper cake you desire. Then bundle all of the diapers together with a large rubber band, and use one of those darling animal print ribbons to wrap around the cake and hide the rubber band! You can even use a smaller, coordinating ribbon to tie around the base of the larger ribbon for contrast and added appeal! Shredded crinkled paper can be used to “frost” the diaper cake! Top each cake with a stuffed jungle animal and Ta-Da! You’ve got a darling shower decoration and baby gift all in one!

Games

A shower isn’t a shower without games. And who hasn’t played the old “Guess-What’s Inside the Basket” game? Why not put a twist on the traditional basket game by having the “Mommy-to-Be” walk around the room holding the basket full of baby goodies.

Ask the guests to simply observe. It is more than likely that guests will automatically assume that they must observe what’s inside the basket so that they can later remember what they saw, and write down as many items as they can. However once “Mommy-to-Be” has made her way around the room with the basket in hand, ask her politely to leave the space and take the basket with her. Then have the guests answer questions regarding what the “Mommy-to-Be” was wearing, and not what was in the basket! Guests will be surprised at the last minute change-up to a well-known baby shower game!

Food

What’s a party without food! Everyone who comes to a party comes for the food!  Why not do something a little different and instead of the traditional cake or cupcakes, do a candy buffet! Find a variety of different clear containers like vases, jars or even wine glasses! Fill the containers with a variety of candy in a wide array of colors!

In the case of a Safari-themed baby shower use candies in shades of orange, green, brown, and yellow! Fill the containers full of candies of a single color, or mix-and-match colored candies to provide even more contrast! For even more eye-appeal, use any left-over ribbon from the diaper cakes to wrap around the clear candy containers!

What little boy isn’t infatuated with anything with wheels? Isn’t your carpet cluttered with everything from Hot Wheels cars and John Deere tractors to Thomas the Train engines and Lightning McQueen?  Why not design a bedroom for your little truck driver that features engines and wheels and everything in between.

Your little boy’s bedroom could be designed based around vehicles in general and anything with wheels, or you can be specific in the design and focus on either trains, trucks, or tractors, etc. If you choose to focus on just one moving machine, start with the bedding. Find bedding that showcases the type of vehicle you have chosen along with the color scheme you like.

For example, in this fire truck bedroom the bedding provides inspiration for the rest of the room design. A barn red and cream color scheme tie in nicely with the color of fire trucks. The artwork above the bed is a definite focal point and really gives the space some charm. Shelving is always an appropriate must have and can be used to display trucks and toys, or books and trinkets.  Always accessorize the space with coordinating lamp shades, floor rugs, and window treatments and you are good to go!

You can’t go wrong with a sports theme design for a boys’ bedroom. No matter what his age, a bedroom decorated with balls, bats, mitts, and hoops is sure to please.  You can focus on designing his room around his favorite sport, or simply decorate the room in every sport he enjoys.

Try to remember that when designing a little boys’ bedroom, or any room for that matter, you don’t have to go overboard. You don’t even have to be matchy-matchy in terms of artwork, window treatments, or bedding. Just try to make sure everything coordinates, and that there is a definite focal point in the space. Sometimes the focal point is the bed, and other times it may be artwork or window treatments.

In the above room, the statement Less is more rings true. The obvious focal point in the space is the large abstract basketball decal on the wall. Simply bedding with a pop of color in coordinating orange gives the room a very simple but sleek feel. The room is definitely masculine and would be perfect for any young sports’ enthusiast.

Are you someone who’s obsessed with the latest DIY trends and who loves to have a project to do yourself?  Are you constantly looking for inexpensive and easy ways to spice up the décor in your home? Have you ever thought about creating a brand new coffee table or nightstand easily and affordably? Here are three table ideas you can use to create fresh, fun and brand new tables for your home all by yourself!

Coffee Table   

Create a rustic coffee table made out of old crates! These charming crates can be purchased at any local craft supply store such as Hobby Lobby or Michaels. Make sure to purchase four of them. Find a color of wood stain that you like and that coordinates with the rest of your living room furniture.

The first thing you will need to do is sand the crates with any type of fine-grain sandpaper and wipe clean. Then spray each crate separately with your wood stain, and allow to dry. Once each crate has completely dried, you can arrange the crates however you like and nail or glue each crate together; taking care to use small enough nails so they don’t show through.

This charming and rustic crate-made coffee table is a perfect focal point for a living room.  Plus it has more than enough storage for décor display and organization. Just think, with the purchase of four simple crates and a can of wood stain, you can have a brand new coffee table for your living room!

Night Stand

Is your bedroom nightstand in need of a facelift? Check out this absolutely darling little nightstand and its extreme makeover! What’s even better is that the makeover is super easy to do with game-changing results!

The first thing you need to do is remove the drawers in your old, drab, forgotten about nightstand. If your nightstand has more than one drawer, that is okay! It will give you more surface area to add pops of color and pizazz!  Next, you need to sand down the nightstand to remove its protective glaze. Then wipe clean. Once the piece is dry, choose a fun paint color that coordinates with your bedroom design. In the case of this particular nightstand they chose a vibrant sea blue.

Once you have painted the nightstand with at least two coats of color, allow it to dry completely. Make sure to either spray or brush on a protective top glaze. This will give the piece some shine as well. Once the glaze had dried, apply the fun, funky and patterned contact paper you have chosen into the nightstand where the shelves once were. You will be amazed at its transformation, and how well the vibrant contact paper makes those open shelf areas pop!

Dining Table

Choosing the right sofa and furniture

When designing any living room space it is best to use a neutral colored sofa.  Starting with a solid colored sofa in a neutral tone provides a nice foundation from which to build the rest of the interior design.  From there, use accent pillows and patterned chairs to give the space the pops of color and depth it needs.

When working with a modern living space featuring a black and white color scheme, start with a dark grey sofa.  Solid dark grey is a happy medium between black and white. This particular sofa by IKEA features an ultra-contemporary form with its straight lines and sharp corners. By using a solid dark grey sofa such as this, you can add pops of interest and color in the form of black, white or silver pillows. Use patterned pillows with chevron or lines for even more added interest.

Choose a rug that compliments the rest of your space

Area rugs are extremely important in defining a space as well as adding color and texture to a room. Area rugs can be used anywhere such as underneath coffee tables, in front of sofa tables or underneath chairs. Area rugs also provide a sense of coziness and warmth within a space no matter what the design style may be.

In the case of a contemporary black and white living room, this particular rug is a deep charcoal color which coordinates nicely with the dark grey sofa.  This area rug features pops of color and texture in the form of detailed white and light grey square designs . Such patterns again provide added interest and give the space some depth and aesthetic appeal.

Coffee tables can enhance your room

Coffee tables are an essential element to any formal living room space. They not only are a conversation piece but can serve as a focal point for the room as well. Coffee tables provide an additional avenue for placing décor accessories, as well as providing storage and display space in a living room.

This white lacquer coffee table pictured above would be the perfect coffee table to use in a contemporary living room featuring a black and white color scheme. It is a super fun and ultra-hip piece of furniture that would tie in nicely with the area rug mentioned previously. In addition, this coffee table would really bring out the pops of light grey and white within the rug.  Home décor accessories such as black or grey vases or bowls would look nice placed on top of this stark white coffee table as well.

Find Inspiration

When designing a master bedroom, or any room for that matter, it is important to find inspiration for the color scheme and design.  In a bedroom, a great place to find inspiration is with the bedding. Quilts, duvets and comforters are plum full of color, texture, and pattern. From these elements homeowners can easily find a color and design scheme for the entire space.

Gray and yellow is the hot color scheme trending right now in the design world. Especially popular in nurseries, gray and yellow can also be used in a master bedroom! Soft and warm, gray and yellow tones provide a comforting feel in any space. From the bedding set pictured below with its beautiful soft colors and textures, wall color, accessories and accent pieces can easily be found for the rest of the space design.

Accessorize

In a master bedroom, the bed is usually the focal point. That is why the bedding can serve as a sounding board for the rest of the room design with its color and pattern. Once the bedding is found, accessories and accent pieces can be added to the space.

In using the gray and yellow bedding as an example, there are several colors that can be used in the room’s accent décor.  Pulling from the pops of white in the comforter and using white pieces of room décor will really give the space a dramatic appeal. White lamp shades and artwork hung in white picture frames will coordinate nicely with the bedding and provide the space with interest and depth.

Window Treatments

Second to the bed in terms of focal points are the windows.  Often times left forgotten, the windows are such an important element to the design and décor of any interior space. Simply updating the window treatments can instantly give the room a brand new look and feel.

When choosing treatments for any window, two important elements must be considered; function and aesthetics. Is the purpose of the window treatment to provide complete privacy? Should the window treatment allow for natural sunlight to enter the space, or are blackout panels needed.

In addition, when choosing treatments for the windows in a room, consideration should be given as to how the treatments will coordinate with the rest of the space.  The color, pattern, and design of the material used should flow nicely with the rest of the room design.  The window treatments should serve as additional focal points and coordinating accent décor in the space.

Summertime is all about bright colors, warm sunshine, time outdoors and new life. Bathroom Painting Ideas 

Paint. Simply put. Paint the wall. In most homes the bathroom is typically one of the smallest rooms in the home. So it’s an easy place to change interior color schemes because it shouldn’t take too terribly long to paint. Nothing brings new life to a room like a fresh coat of paint. Plus, since a bathroom is quite easy to redesign simply due to its size, go dramatic! Leave your comfort zone and tape off those black and white stripes that you’ve been itching to try.  Accent the space with pops of pink, red, or even yellow and you’ve got yourself a fresh, fun and brand new bathroom! If you’re tentative about vibrant colors, choose the smallest bathroom in your home and start there.

Accessorize your Bathroom

It doesn’t get any easier to breathe new life into a space than changing out the room’s accessories. In a bathroom especially hand towels, wall art, mirrors, and countertop décor such as soap dispensers can easily be switched. In fact, it’s so easy to change out bathroom accessories that you can do it each season! If your bathroom is a neutral color say, beige or white, the sky is the limit when it comes to color schemes. Add reds hand towels, orange wash cloths and a chocolate colored vase full of yellow mums in the fall.  In the winter use navy hand towels with baby blue wash cloths and silver décor on the countertop. Springtime can bring lavenders and deep violets and summertime can bring pastels like pink, green and yellow.

Get Organized

Sometimes all it takes to make a space feel new and fresh is to simply organize it! Out with the old and in with the new. If you love your bathroom already, and don’t want to mess with paint or new accessories, give it a good scrub and toss out anything you may not need or want any longer. Organize the shelves and cupboards. Rearrange existing décor items you already have. Sometimes simply moving these already existing items into new homes gives the space an entirely new look and feel.

It’s the 4^th of July and that means sunshine, watermelon, 4^th of July parades, parties and fireworks! For children the 4^th of July is a day that many look forward to. It’s filled with fun activities and events that create memories that last a lifetime. Handprint American Flag

Cute, classic, and something creative to use year after year, an American flag made out of your children’s hand and footprints is truly a must-have keepsake. Find a large piece of white paper or even a blank canvas. Place a generous amount of red and blue paint on separate plates. Have your children dip their feet into the red paint and press their paint-covered tootsies onto the paper. Do the same thing with the blue paint. Have the children press their hands into the blue paint and press their hands onto the paper creating the “stars.” A handprint America flag is the perfect activity for the 4^th of July and one that can be used again and again.  Who doesn’t love to get messy in paint!

Patriotic T-Shirts

There are stencils and iron-on decals in almost every craft store. If you can’t find a stencil or iron-on decal, create a stamp of your own! Grab an old sponge and a star shaped cookie cutter. Place the star cookie cutter on top of the sponge and trace around it. Then cut the sponge star out and dip it into red or blue paint! Press your sponge start onto your t-shirt and voila! A decorated t-shirt that is perfect for the 4^th of July!

 4^th of July Crown

Image Via: Spoonful Need a crown to go with that t-shirt? No problem! Your children will love to create their very own 4^th of July crown using duct tape, straws and pipe cleaners! Find a box of red, white and blue straws. These are easy to find around the 4^th of July at your local grocery store or Walmart. Grab some pipe cleaners while you are at it. You may need to buzz over to the local craft store for pipe cleaners but they are easy to find. Next make a stop at the local hardware store. Find some red or blue duct tape. The duct tape will serve as the base of the crown and will also hold the straws in place. Pull strips of red or blue (or both) duct tape that are twice as long as your child’s head. Turn the strip over and place the bottom edges of your straws onto the sticky part of the duct tape. Then fold the remaining strip of duct tape over top of the straws, sandwiching the straws in between the sticky portion of the duct tape. Stick the pipe cleaners into the straws and twist and curl the top edge of the pipe cleaners as you choose! Staple the two edges of duct tape together and crown your child for the 4^th of July!

The house is clean and the food is prepared. The grass has been mowed and the bushes trimmed. All is well and you are ready for your 4^th of July celebration! But wait! That all-important but often times forgotten about front porch has yet to be decorated! Remembering that the front porch is the first impression guests receive about what’s awaiting behind that front door, you scramble to find some last minute red, white and blue decorations. Here are several ideas you can use to spruce up your front porch for the 4^th of July.

Front Door Décor

Take down that faded floral wreath that has been surviving the blistering summer sun and replace it with a simple metal star, or a red and white berry wreath, or both! Hang a wooden flag or find a new wreath full of bright red, white and blue flowers.

You can even make a wreath quickly and easily using burlap and hot glue. Buy a metal wreath frame and a roll of burlap. Thread the burlap through the wire frame and glue a few red, white, or blue flowers or bows at the top. The sky really is the limit when it comes to your front door and décor.

Pillows, Rugs and Throws

Cushion your porch swing or rocking chair with an assortment of pillows. Choose solid red, white, or blue pillows and throw in a few additional accent pillows with American. Adding patterned pillows amidst the solid colors provides interest, depth, and pops of accents on your porch!

If you don’t have a rocking chair or porch swing, find a small, old vintage chair and place a single pillow on it with a red, white or blue throw blanket over the back. Throw a 4^th of July-themed welcome mat at the base of your front door.  These small and easy additions will provide a dramatic facelift to your front porch for the 4^th of July celebration.

Swags and Garland

Nothing says 4^th of July like traditional red, white and blue swags draped over the railing on the porch. Why not spice it up a bit and use strings of berry garland accented with red, white and blue bows or stars on the ends. Drape the garland around the front door for a dramatic statement and warm welcome for your guests. You can even wrap it around your front porch pillars and hang coordinating bows or stars at its base. 

Accessories for your Porch

Accessorizing your front porch is yet another way you can decorate for the 4^th of July. Place variegated sizes of white vases filled with red, white and blue flowers on a small bench or end table and set it next to the front door or rocking chair. Fill those extra flower pots you have stashed away somewhere with red and white geraniums, and wrap a darling blue ribbon around the vase to finish it off. Place the pots at the base of your steps or on either side of your front door.
