Bedrooms are named so for the main piece of furniture used in this room – the bed. What do we all use a bed for? Beds are foremost used for sleeping – an activity that occupies…or, rather, according to health professionals, should occupy…fully one-third of a 24-hour cycle. This means that this one room in a house takes up the most time in our lives – the average human spends 25+ years sleeping! Therefore, traditionally, the bedroom has been a place of rest, and design of a bedroom revolved around relaxing, calming, and restorative themes. Calming colors like blues, and neutral colors like white are traditional bedroom colors. Heavy curtains blocking out the light coming in from the windows are common.

Creating a multifunctional space
However, more and more, we are finding that in this modern era of bustle, efficiency, and alternative work styles, the bedroom has become transformed into a place that serves more than the utilitarian purpose of sleep. And while the purpose of bedrooms is expanding, the size of them has mostly remained the same. This means that while we are bringing more activities into a space, we must find creative, innovative ways to do so – more activities means more stuff.
Office area sharing in your bedroom
Working in the bedroom requires a workspace – typically, a desk with a chair and some storage space for filing important papers and documents. Beds may be removed from the floorspace of a bedroom entirely, either disappearing during the day into a futon or pull-out sofa, or more fashionably – into a lofted space, if the ceiling room allows. Stackable furniture like nested tables become useful for spreading out as needed. Shelves that fold into or out of the wall are another space-saving feature becoming more common. Bedroom themes are blooming into warmer, energizing colors like oranges, yellows, and coral shades. The bed is typically the largest piece of furniture in a bedroom – and often an overlooked one at that. Its time to put clunky beds to use, and many companies are doing just that, building storage spaces into mattress frames or headboards.

There are many options when it comes to transforming a bedroom into a multifunctional room. It can at once be inviting, comfortable, and yet inspire you to get things done during the daytime hours. It’s all a matter of choice, and thankfully when it comes to shopping for the modern bedroom, the choices abound.
