How to Decorate “Green” for your Outdoor Summer Home

Guest Blogger #561, Entry #1273, June 12, 2012

Summer is just around the corner for most of us. It’s the time of the year, when we think about cleaning up our decks, pool areas, sunrooms, and patios. Many of us want to spruce up these areas with some new decorating ideas and accessories. And, of course, we want to be green along the way. For some decorating ideas, keep on reading.

Use Rugs

Outdoor rugs have become one of the latest decorating trends. Whether you cover your entire deck with one, put it under the table, or simply use it as the entrance way, rugs can add a whole new look. They can add some color and pull together an area. Rugs can make the outdoors look more like the indoors.

There are many eco friendly rugs on the market today. You can find ones made out of bottles, plastics, and even the scraps from flip-flops!  While being green, these rugs are extremely practical, durable, and mold resistant.

The Benefits of Solar Lighting

Lighting is often a great way to give a room or area a new and different look. It too, can make the outdoors more home like. Solar lighting is just that, it relies on the sun. Because of this, solar lighting is definitely environmentally friendly. No electricity is needed, no increase in costs and bills, and no additional outlets installed. The only cost is simply the purchase of the lights.

There is a wide variety of solar lighting available on the market today and it seems to increase every year. From hanging chandeliers, to decorative stakes, to landscape lights, to flickering solar candles, to solar lanterns, there is something from everyone. Solar power is definitely ecofriendly.

Update Your Pillows

By updating your outdoor pillows, is another way to bring the outside back to life. Pillows are great because they are simple, relatively inexpensive, practical, and colorful.

You will have no problem finding pillows that are environmental friendly. Look for materials such as bamboo, polyester, organic cotton and recycled poly fiberfill.  Many outdoor pillows can be used indoors too, have UV protection, are easy to clean, and are mold resistant.

These are just a few ideas to decorating “green” for the summer. You can update your pool area, deck, or patio and do it while being environmentally friendly. It’s definitely a win-win. Look into products like bamboo poles – they’re good for the environment and good to use to decorate! Enjoy and get started today!
