Entry #260, August 30, 2010

A year ago on Stagetecture I talked about trying to figure out when it’s time to hold a Garage Sale.  A year later, decluttering your home is still a chore and one that needs to be done regularly.  Whether you are cleaning out your kid’s closets, your garage, or the kitchen cabinets – organization is crucial for your home to flow efficiently. Read on to see the post from a year ago.

Maybe it’s time for a Garage Sale

Some of us love them, and some of us hate them.. Although, if you are selling your home, or plan on staying awhile, the tips below may make you ready to have a garage sale.

Junk or Treasure?

When you look in your closets, garage, children’s rooms, etc.. are they cluttered because you have a lot of things, or a lot of junk?  Take 5-10 minutes and walk through your home. When you open the closet door, you should be able to say that everything you see (and don’t see) will be used at one time or another, in the next 6 months.  (Not including holiday decorations).  If you can’t say this.. sell it!  What you don’t need, someone else does.

Hold a yard or garage sale and sell what you don’t need or use!

“I HATE garage sales!”

If the idea of haggling with customers over 2 dollars for your G.I. Joe action figure is not down your alley then here are other ways to declutter those junky spaces.

  • Craig’s list, Oodle – Most major cities have them (Online classifieds)
  • Salvation Army, Vietnam Veterans, Goodwill (Donation Charities)
  • Churches, Community Center’s, Senior Citizen organization’s
  • School’s, Daycare’s, Mission’s, Half Way House’s

Organize so you can find what you need.

Many of the above places have web sites that you can register for donation’s to be picked up from your doorstep! Many will offer donation receipts (tax deductions).

So roll up your sleeves.. if you tackle a closet a weekend… you will find that high school yearbook, that you thought you had lost.. and maybe gain some space at the same time!
