Do you have space adjacent to your entrance or garage door entrance that you don’t know what to do with? Do you have extra space in a front foyer that collects everyone’s stuff!? Have you thought about adding a mudroom? A mudroom is an area, preferably a room or a space tucked out of the high traffic areas that separates the outside from the inside. Generally used in cold, wet climates to house coats, MUDDY shoes, and umbrellas. Once a
utilitarian space, it has gained more popularity in decor and appeal because of it’s practicality. Let’s see how to organize that extra space into a mudroom.
Storage: Have as much of it as you can! Designing your dream home shows several different storage ideas. Storage can range from baskets, bins and
shelves, to hooks for coats and backpacks. The Remodeling Center shows us an idea for shoes. Shoe racks will also help family members find their shoes quicker, and keep the floors cleaner.
Furniture: A sitting space in a mudroom is essential if you have the space. Suite 101 has an article on how to choose furniture for your space. Benches, and all-in-one bench storage units work best. Choose pieces that are durable, and can stand to get wet, and dirty. This doesn’t mean it has to be ugly! HGTV Canada has a gorgeous example of a functional and beautiful mudroom.
Tip:
Laundry rooms make great mudrooms too! If your laundry room is adjacent to an entrance door, consider using a portion of it to house coat hooks, a bench, and places for storage. Voila! Instant mudroom.
