Make a Wish List

Think about your needs when making a wish list. Such as do you need to be close to public transportation, how far is it from the school, what’s the distance from the grocery stores, banks, and library or mall, or perhaps you have a part-time job how far will it be from there. If you want pets think about that, how many rooms, perhaps you may want a roommate. This will help you to narrow which places work for you.

Create a Budget of Monthly Items

Set a budget of monthly expenses. Try looking for apartments with utilities included or that are having specials for students or first-time apartment renters. Then think about, if the apartment does not have utilities included, about the, water, electric and internet and work them into the budget. Also, factor in groceries and any extras like school supplies for the year or semester. Most apartments will ask for a down payment so to hold it for you. Reflect over your budgeting expenses for your college apartment that way you will be better prepared before and during the process.

One great way to find great off-campus housing is by looking in your schools classifieds section. The school’s classified section is built around the needs of the students. So you will be able to find off-campus housing that should be more fit to what you may want and need. From the location, to the budget, to the safety of the student; so take a look around at the classifieds and see if something jumps out at you. There should be contact information for each classified so you can email or call about whichever one you are interested in.

Finding your first apartment can be a great process however, there are some things you should be practical and aware of when making this decision. ‘Creative Small Apartment Decor Ideas’

In a small apartment it is necessary to evenly distribute the space.

The colors for the walls and the floor must be clearly divided and equal throughout the apartment,keep to the lighter colours as dark colours will make your apartment look even smaller .

The use of mirrors helps to give the illusion of space, especially useful in small apartments.  Place mirrors on a wall opposite of a window wall and see how the view is multiplied times ten throughout the rest of the space

Small apartment decor ideas

Instead of the hassle of trying to fit in all your pieces of furniture together in a small space opt for convertible furniture. Convertible furniture is furniture that can serve for two or three purposes simply by moving around several parts. These pieces of furniture can be extremely convenient for a small space as they fill several functions, thus enabling you to get rid of unnecessary furniture and save space in your apartment

Divide the room into zones according to their function : dining kitchen and bedroom / living room. There are many great pieces of furniture available for just this purpose,bookcases, curtains and dividers can create distinct areas, as can different types of lighting — spotlights over your cooking area, for example, and lamps around the seating area. Besides making these areas more functional, such separations actually make your apartment look larger.

Creative tricks for your small apartment

The two areas in my project, a small apartment of 35 square meters in a town house, are separated only by a rug to give the illusion of a larger space . The sofa-bed  is near the only window and on the longest wall beside the sofa is a closet with sliding mirrored doors which reflects the light from the window and gives the impression of a greater breadth to the room. In front of the sofa is a small table / bench which is easily moved for the opening of the bed. The continuity between the living / kitchen area is achieved  by keeping the floor and the walls similar throughout.

The kitchen/dining area is a fitted out with a black and white kitchen  with plenty of vertical storage so as not to waste an inch of space and full height cupboards, use these for the kitchen towels and all your kitchen utensils. The extend-able glass topped dining table does not visually interrupt the area and the chairs are stackable. To illuminate the table a chandelier is used to give a glittering and romantic  aura.

The personal touch is added by the use of color through accessories, the white linen sofa bed made from a coarse textured fabric is dressed with soft cushions that mirror the color of the exquisite cabinet beside it. The raw silk curtains and another texture to the space and are kept to a neutral color. The c lamp with a gray shade and lavender base compliments the glass droplets of the chandelier above the dining table , giving the room a feeling of freshness and elegance. Even the kitchen accessories such as bowls, glasses and vases are lavender shades and add a further note of transparency and freshness.  The free wall behind the sofa is painted lavender to make it the focal point amongst the other walls which are white, a white frame is painted on the feature wall in which my modern graphic is hung thus adding interest and more color.

When you’re living in an apartment, you have to expect that you will have limitations in terms of a makeover plan. But this doesn’t mean you can’t have the best of what you plan for your apartment room. You just have to know the best idea to put them in place. Like when you want to install a TV on the wall, this is very possible without damaging the wall of the apartment. How? Just follow the steps below on how to build a TV wall for your apartment:

Tools and Materials

• Lumber
• Screws
• Paint
• Sandpaper
• TV mount
• Electric drill
• Hole saw bit
• Circular saw
• Clamp
• Protective goggles

Procedure

Step 1: Measure and cut your wood

The measurement depends on the size of your TV. Use the circular saw for a quick cut. But if you want it easier, there are stores that offer pre-cut wood according to your measurement.

Step 2: Screw them all together

What you need to do is to sandwich them all together where the drywall on top, followed by the plywood and then the 2 X 4 lumbers. Screw the four, longer 2 X 4 vertically. Ensure that you space them equally at 16 inches apart.

Step 3: Paint

Paint it with the right color that will blend perfectly into your wall. You may also have it in contrast with the color of the wall to provide accent. Make sure to spackle over the screws and the edges so it will look neat and elegant.

Step 4: Attach the TV mount

Attach the TV mount into the wall into the studs of your fake wall. This should hold the TV firm and steady. In this step, do not attach your TV yet.

Step 5: Drill

Using the hole saw, drill in places where you will insert the cables and boxes. Make room for audio-visual accessories that you may want to install in the future.

Step 6:  Install it into the wall

Now, look for a stud that you can drill a screw and attach into the real wall. A 4-inch screw should be enough to hold them thoroughly.

Step 7: Mount your TV

The last step is to mount your TV and attach the wirings. Make sure you have everything connected accordingly.

That’s it! Now, sit back, relax and enjoy your tv without worrying about damaging the walls when you move!

If you are going to stay in the same rented apartment for a while, personalize it by painting the walls. Don’t be afraid to seek permission from your landlord. If you are not picking something too over the top such as fluorescent green or pink, you will most likely get the approval to give your apartment a fresh coat. Alternatively, vinyl wallpaper is a great way to spruce up your walls. They are easy to remove and mostly residue free. Plus, they are so thin that they almost look like a paint on the wall.

Most rented apartments come with the standard bland carpet. Even though you cannot remove it, you can always perk it up with a beautiful area rug. Apart from hiding flaws of outdated carpeting, these rugs will help you add interest and color to the room. There are so many styles and designs available that you will not have any trouble finding the one that suits your personality.

Similarly, add a fun welcome mat outside the entrance door, under the kitchen sink, and outside the bathroom door. Small creative touch ups like this can go a long way when it comes to personalizing your rental apartment.

If you have a small apartment, you might think that your décor options are limited. Actually, that’s not so much the case. You simply have to be a bit more creative when it comes to designing your space in a way that will not monopolize what “little” room that you have.

Make the most of your walls.

Of course, walls serve a purpose. After all, apartments would not exist without them. However, sometimes we think that when it comes to the interior wall space, all we can pretty much do is hang a picture up. Nothing could be further from the truth. You can use your wall to put in a flat screen (which removes the need for a table for your television). You can use your wall to build a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf against. A sturdy futon can be a “couch” by day and a sleeper by night should you have a guest come and stay with you. Create a washer/closet.

If you look at some London or Rome apartment rentals, you might see this particular idea: Some spaces, like studio apartments, are so small that you have to double-up the use of rooms; including storage closets. Take a closet that has washer/dryer hook-ups, for instance. Why not purchase a stackable to put in there on one side and on the other, build your own closet where you can put some of the out-of-season items that you don’t presently need?
