When it comes to preparing Easter baskets for kids, it’s easy to pick those ready-made candies, chocolates, jelly beans, and more. While there is nothing wrong in these types of treats, this year why not consider some healthier options or at least keep them in moderation to balance out everything. To help you, we have some great ideas that are delicious, fun, and healthy at the same time. And we promise you kids will love them too!

Easter Basket Ideas for Kids

[ad#co-3]

Carrots

Easter bunny loves carrots. So, why not wrap a few sticks with a ribbon, or fill a few small cellophane bags with baby carrots? Toss an individual hummus container in the basket for a healthy dip.

Hard Boiled Eggs

You have already dyed those eggs. So, why that filling protein go to waste? You might as well slip a few in. However, just make sure to use food grade dyes such as gel, liquid, and paste colors for cake decorating. Decorated eggs are indeed a healthy addition to any Easter basket. And they are fun too!

Easter eggs are a great treat and are healthy!

Image via: MSLiving

Fruit Treats

For a little chocolaty treat with a healthy dose of fruit, dip grapes, whole strawberries or banana slices in melted chocolate. Microwave a little dark or semi-sweet chocolate, or melt in a double boiler and dip fruits of your choice. Freeze to let them set. For some added crunch, roll the fruit in chopped nuts like almonds, walnuts, or pecans. If you prefer to stay away from sweets all together consider using nut butters such as peanut, almond, sunflower butter instead of chocolate.

Homemade Marshmallow Peeps

Easter without marshmallow peeps is like Christmas without cookies. For a healthier version, ditch the white sugar and corn syrup in favor of honey. We are not saying that these are as healthy as broccoli florets, but they are at least free of any artificial dyes and preservatives.

Plastic Easter Eggs

Healthy Easter Baskets – fill plastic eggs with dried fruits, nuts and toys

Image via: Crazy Little Projects

Those colorful plastic Easter eggs are a great way to pre-portion treats. Fill them up with dehydrated or dried fruits such as dates, apricots, toasted hazelnuts, macadamia nuts or yogurt covered raisins. Apart from being healthy, there is an element of surprise too!

No doubt Easter Bunny is the bearer of delicious, tasty treats. But this does not mean that the holiday turns into a week-long candy spree. Use these ideas and let us know what other items would you like to put in your kids healthier Easter basket?

If you are trying to plan an Easter egg hunt you may be overwhelmed with all of the ideas you have, but no time to do them all (or this may just be me!) Last year I featured this DIY Saturday for planning an Easter egg hunt and I was told it was a great help. Let me know if it helps!

One from the archives….

Original Entry #473, April 9, 2011

Happy DIY Saturday! Two weeks from this Sunday will be Easter and this is a perfect time to start planning out your Easter Egg Hunt for the kids, family, neighbors, and even the adults!

Easter egg hunts are a nostalgic way to bring back memories that you had as a kid, running through the grass and collecting as many “hidden” eggs as possible! Today, I thought I would turn today’s DIY Saturday into a helpful way to plan for a hunt at your home. From the invitations to decorating the Easter baskets, here are creative ways from Martha Stewart to make the day memorable for all.

You Tube video shows you how to make “green” Easter decoration for gift giving:

Easter Egg Hunt Preparation

Make Easter invitations now to send

Steps for making Easter Egg Hunt Invitations:

Print clip art onto card stock. Cut out card, and fold in half. Join the backs of the two halves with double-sided tape or a glue stick.

Print the Easter Egg Hunt Invitation
Print the Yellow Spring Invitation
Print the Spring in Bloom Invitation

Colorful hard boiled eggs with flavored salts

Hard Cooked Eggs – Seasoned Salts

Hard-cooked eggs are served with bowls of cilantro- and pimenton-flavored salts.

Ingredients

Coarse salt

1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh cilantro

Coarse salt

2 dozen large eggs

Directions

Make the pimenton salt: Combine pimenton and 2 teaspoons salt in a bowl.

Make the cilantro salt: Combine cilantro and 2 teaspoons salt in a bowl. Let dry for at least 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, make the hard-cooked eggs: Prepare an ice-water bath. Place eggs in a large saucepan, and fill with cold water, covering eggs by 1 inch. Bring water to a boil over medium-high heat. Remove from heat. Let stand, covered, for 12 minutes. Transfer hard-cooked eggs to ice-water bath (this will prevent discoloration and facilitate peeling). Drain.

Serve hard-cooked eggs with seasoned salts for sprinkling.

Steps for making Easter basket tags:

Inexpensive baskets are adorned with clip art tags for kids to write their names on, so there are no mix-ups at your Easter-egg hunt party.

Print onto card stock, and cut out. Punch a hole at the top, and thread with string or ribbon. Use open space to write a name on each.

Print Easter Basket Tags

Easter Egg Cartons:

Cartons adorned with our floral clip art let the kids showcase their favorite eggs and get them home safely.
