Fall DIY: Corn Candleholder (Video)

Materials

• About 16 cobs of Indian corn (the actual number depends on the size of your vase)
• A sharp kitchen knife
• One pillar candle (about 4’’x12’’)
• A cylinder vase (about 17’’ tall)
• Hot glue gun and glue sticks or a rubber band
• Twine or ribbon

Directions

• Separate the leaves from the cobs, saving both for decoration
• Cut a small piece from the bottom of the corn so they have a flat end
• Place the candle into the vase and the vase on a plate or charger
• Hot glue 2 leaves on both sides of a cob, making sure that a good portion of the kernels are exposed. Repeat until all cobs have leaves. You can choose to not make this step and leave the cobs as they are, without the leaves.
• Put a little hot glue onto the kernels at the backs of the cobs and attach them onto the vase, vertically. Make sure that you level the cobs with the base so it will stand firm. If you don’t use a hot glue gun, wrap a rubber band around the vase at the middle and push the cobs and the leaves between the rubber band and the vase.
• Wrap the twine or ribbon around the center of your cobs. If you choose to use the rubber band, use this step to also hide the rubber band underneath.

This easy Fall DIY is great to use as a centerpiece on a festive or everyday fall table.  You can use the vase to add flowers instead of a candle, to make a wonderful unique flower vessel. Also, you could omit the glass vase and glue the cobs directly onto the candle. In this case, make sure to be careful not to let the candle burn to near to the dry leaves and corn. It is better to not burn the candle at all in this case, or let it burn down only a little until a small votive candle fits into the hole formed on top of the candle. Use an electrical votive candle for even more safety but for the same great autumn look for your table.

I remember when we were decorating for Memorial Day, and in a week it will be the Fourth of July! I love the holidays with kids. They give you an excuse to be creative and spontaneous. Each holiday you can count on Stagetecture to find some easy crafts that you can do with the kids.

Look at this Confetti Launcher from Disney Family Fun. This one may not be for you parents that don’t want confetti everywhere!

Let the kids make an American Flag fan! They can cool themselves off, and be patriotic.
