How to Use Pale Trending Colors of the Year in your Home

This year, however, the unveiling of 2016 colors was a bit of a surprise.

Instead of leading us all in the direction of bright and bold, two of the major names in the world of decor trends point to the soothing qualities of whites and pale tones. Benjamin Moore Paints even named “Simply White” the 2016 Color of the Year, noting that it’s time “to surrender to the complexity of white.”

In the same nod to neutrals, Sherwin Williams introduced Pura Vida as one of four separate color palettes for the coming year. It features subtle hues drawn from nature and it features pale tones rather than the vibrancy of the previous year. Paint names reflect the mood: Alabaster, Ancient Ground, Useful Gray, Doeskin. They aren’t quite “no color,” but they are far from bright.

Where Does It Lead?

Were does this forecast lead in terms of decorating your own home? Well, unless you insist on starting from scratch to reflect the latest “with-it” trends, it means that you have freedom to mix some new with your existing decor, and to keep it simple. It also allows you to build a base that you can brighten up when the mood strikes you.

If your walls need freshening, choose a “whiter shade of pale” to serve as a starting point. Benjamin Moore notes that, of its top 10 best-selling colors, five are shades of white. With more than 250 variants of white to choose from, you will certainly find one to love.

White can be the “bones” of a soothing, Zen-like ambience for any room of your home, but it’s particularly appropriate for establishing a spa-like feel in a master bathroom. Think white in all its forms: sculptural bathroom fixtures, soft terrycloth robes and towels, white linen shades at the windows, white or bleached wood cabinets, white marble underfoot. Add in pale vanilla candles for visual and “scentual” appeal and luxuriate in your own private retreat to restore a sense of balance to your life.

Throughout the Home

Revamping a bathroom is a perfect way to begin a home update. Unless it’s time for a major rehaul, the smallish size of most baths means that a redo can be accomplished in minimal time and within a reasonable budget. If you already have white bathroom fixtures, layer on different textures and varying shades for a stylish monochromatic scheme. Use the same principles for decorating a dynamite kids’ space, but add in some gray or beige towels that won’t broadcast the residue of clean-up efforts. Use natural toned wicker baskets to corral grooming gear.

Go subdued in a guest powder room. Refinish a vanity cabinet and framed mirror with chalky milk paint, add a fluffy white rug, stack armloads of pale hand towels on a counter, and accessorize with pale seashells. Find sepia-toned prints of deserted beach scenes and have them framed in rustic gray wood. Avoid a laboratory or clinical feeling by adding plenty of texture and making certain that the “whites” don’t all match. It will always be beautiful, and never boring.

How is the app helpful? Let’s say you want to match your wall color to your rug. Take a photo, save colors you like and adjust colors to account for lighting if needed. If you don’t mind losing a bit of edge in the look and would prefer a softer industrial vibe, you can also go for more colorful metal options like copper and nickel. Wood pieces can also be utilized in an industrial-style home to add a bit of rustic appeal. Wood paneling on ceilings, distressed doors, or furniture pieces that incorporate both metal and wood are wonderful ways to start revamping any living space. Try pairing a wooden dining table with metal chairs as a starter example. If you like the look, continue further with larger pieces, and let the theme spread throughout the house; from kitchen to bathroom to bedroom.

Go Modern

One simple way to infuse a more industrial look into your home is to swap out more traditional pieces for modern accoutrements. Rustic furniture pieces and manufactured accessories combine to create an industrialized space you can be proud of. A big portion of industrial-style design involves exposing housing elements that many homeowners and builders tend to cover up. Uncovered pipes and ceiling beams are staples of ready-made warehouse-style homes. Exposed brick can be cleaned up and used as is, or a coat of paint in a neutral color or stark white over the top can further add to your theme. Wooden beams can be weathered with home décor products to give them an intentionally unfinished look, and create a unique appeal in your home you never knew you had.

If you don’t have natural brick walls or an old space to revamp, it’s easy to inject a bit of industrial air with some well-selected accessories. For practicality and looks, purchase an industrial-style bar cart for your living room and display your favorite beverages in carafes. With clean lines and metal and wood workings, this cart can easily get you on your way to your newly-themed home. Items that display inner working mechanisms are ideal for an industrial house or apartment, and the more metal, the better. Don’t go overboard with your additions and create clutter, but pick pieces that easily encompass the industrial look and let the clean lines tell your design story.

This gorgeous vignette was at Fine Furniture

Instead of me rehashing every day I thought sharing the highlights of my favorite brands and design trends would make for a much better recap.

Geometric Designs with Glimmer

Geometrics in patterns isn’t new to the world of design, but seeing it in inspiring ways was a trend at High Point Market. Subtle and bold instances were everywhere. As you can see in the bar tray above in the first Fine Furniture photo, the Greek key feet of the tray counterbalances the kaleidoscope inspired lamp to the left.

Bernhardt Furniture had beautiful accents of the Greek key symbols throughout their Soho Luxe collection. If you look carefully throughout their furniture, each piece is elegantly detailed with patterns, symbols and shimmering brass or mirrors.

Color Meets Prints in Fabrics, Wallpapers, & Textiles

Another design trend I loved seeing was furniture brands combining furniture fabrics, curtain textiles, and wallpaper to create a cohesive look. Thibaut Design did this beautifully. The nations oldest continuing wallpaper company showed us fresh pops of color from floor to furniture to walls.

Classic Styles are Retold in New Ways

It was a pleasure to meet Jamie Drake again in person at High Point. I had first met Jamie at the Sub Zero Wolf New Generation Media Event in 2013. He has paired with Theodore Alexander Furniture to bring his impeccable style and unique blend of soft jewel tones to his line. I was able to catch this shot of him as he was being photographed by the “REAL” photographers I saw a trend of bringing the Regency Style of vintage Hollywood glam adorned with modern fabrics to be one of the best highlights of Jamie’s line.

Wrapping up High Point Market

It’s hard to capture the event in blog posts because you don’t get to see, touch, hear and feel the hustle and bustle of High Point Market. I have however left you with the best parts of the market, and spared you the sore feet. Soon you will start seeing the highlights in home decor magazines, furniture stores, and beyond. Choosing the Right Trash Compactor for Your Home

Home trash compactors for well-stocked kitchens have been available and in use for a long time, but only recently have they become so popular as a must- have component in the technologically advanced kitchens found in today’s homes. The typical home kitchen trash compactor processes about six bags of unprocessed trash into a smaller, bag weight approximately 30 lbs. And, as everyone knows, that daily task of taking out the trash that can drag on, until some fed up soul just decides to take care of it once and for all. A trash compactor for the household takes that daily chore and happily transforms it into a weekly gig that is bound to make everyone in the family sit up and smile. Some new models feature access doors that swing out, for easier than ever access to the compacted trash.

How The Trash Compactor Works

With a convenient location in the kitchen, you basically treat a kitchen compactor just as you would a traditional trash receptacle, and only when the volume of trash in it reaches a specific level, do you then perform a compression. To compress trash, you simply touch a start button, which prompts a flat plate to power down. This plate is what serves to compress the trash. Once full resistance is met, the plate will automatically respond by lifting back up automatically. Some compactors are designed for the metal plate to remain in the down position, keeping everything compressed. This entire process takes around 45 seconds, and generally, once you depress the start button, you can walk away and let it do its thing; not having to lord over it while it’s hard at work. Not all trash compactors are equal, in terms of power. This can represent space savings and time savings, in households that choose a more powerful model.

A Few Notables Regarding Operation Details

It’s important to exercise care when you are in the process of reloading a new bag into the compactor. If you are not careful to fully seat and align the bag within the container, you could wind up with ripped sides of the bag, and a bit of an unpleasant mess. A fully compacted trash bag will at first require some getting used to, as it’s surprisingly a lot heavier than most people imagine it will be. Look for bags that include a handy carrying strap, which you position under the bag during the loading of it into the compactor container. This can make “taking out the trash” a whole lot easier on the appointed trash schleper. The volume of weight comes from the capability of a trash compactor to take around 10 regular sized kitchen trash bags, full of trash, but not yet compressed, and smashes it all down into one single compactor bag. Certainly makes sense, right? So much compressed trash should be so heavy! One thing to keep in mind is that the addition of wet garbage will definitely develop pretty foul odors as it decays. There are different ways to circumvent this issue; one being to simply leave out the wet trash contributions.

Important Selection Considerations for your Trash Compactor

First, make sure you have enough space for a compactor, and then take precise measurements. Compactors, in general, come in widths of 12 to 15 inches, and heights of 34 to 35 inches. Next, look at differences in power you’ll have, and other less critical but convenient features. Learn what each model entails in the way of maintenance and supplies needed. Trash compactors start out at a price of around $550, and go up to around $1,500.

• Power Options: Power ranges in trash compactors are between 1.4 cu. ft., and offer a compacting force between 2,000 and 5,000 lbs. Typically, the price is commensurate with the volume of power, or force the unit exerts. The more powerful the force, the louder the performance of the compactor. Learn to read the ratings in the store. A compaction ratio of 6:1 means it can effectively compact or reduce six bags into the size of one. Keep in mind that the higher the ratio. the heavier the bag will be to lug out to the trash. Take care to know how many lbs. you can safely lift, before you buy.
• Looking at Modern Compactor Features: Performance, convenience and safety are the focus of all compactor designs. Everything else is less critical, but can make a difference to you. The toe kick is what you kick with your foot to open the compactor. Look for a model that includes this convenient feature. An improvement in newer designs is made with built-in air freshener compartments and charcoal filters that combat odors. Households with small children appreciate removable key-knob controls, and anti-jam sensors will sound should you overfill the compactor.
• Use and Maintenance: Your trash compactor should be maintenance-free. The compartments that extend out further are the easiest to clean. Some compactors require the use of proprietary bags, while others are designed to accept regular bags. Exceptions to “compactible” items are organic foods, for which you can use the garbage disposal, and items you recycle. Not only will a trash compactor alleviate the need to carry out the trash on a daily basis, but it will provide a nice way to conceal your kitchen trash and give the area more space. There’s no difficult procedure to install a trash compactor. Just plug it in. Once you press the “start” button, no one will be able to open the unit, which is a great safety feature.
• Environmentally Helpful: If every single household in the U.S. had a trash compactor, landfills everywhere could be reduced by 80 percent.

Open space planning for your kitchen and living room is not only practical. Its layout also maximizes social interaction without being closed out. A simple and more inexpensive method is to remove some nonbearing walls to create more space. But this should be consulted with an expert first, especially if you have to fitt utilities. It also won’t happen overnight, but can be manageable within a couple of days. The remodel wont cause too big of a mess, but will leave you with waste materials, which have to be disposed appropriately.

The negative aspects to open plan living

There is also a downside to open plan living and not everyone is a big fan of it. That’s why it is important to design and plan well ahead to get the best results to fit your needs. The biggest con is privacy and cooking odors. If you are very much worried about the smells, a sliding door option can be a good compromise. Odor can be taken care of with proper ventilation. Make sure to have either an overhead or downdraft ventilation system installed. If you prefer more privacy, a split level layout is a wonderful idea to divide the common areas into different zones. Another option is to divide an open space indirectly. This can be achieved by using a kitchen island with a breakfast bar, in turn this creates an invisible line between a dining and living area.

The layout of an open floor plan is worth to consider, because it offers many great combination options. You can always adjust it to your needs and find a compromise within the arrangements. Depending on your preference, whether a kitchen/dining room combo or a living room/dining room/kitchen combo, etc. works for you, I would definitely go for it!
