Tile ideas: Preparation and Application

Installation of these tiles is similar to any other natural stone product for best results, we recommend a qualified tradesperson who is experienced in the laying of natural stone product the tiles are sold in 12 inch by 12inch all tiles interlock on all sides sort tiles before installing to ensure an even color layout for a vertical or contoured surface, smaller pebble sizes should be considered as well as a polymer based adhesive with a short hydration period, i.e.: glue setting time Substrates – Area of application should be flat, clean, dry and free of contaminants. For wet areas the use of reinforced waterproof membranes is suggested. In the case of flooring a fall to the drainage point of no less than two inches in required.

Tile Adhesive:

Mosaic tile adhesive – Use only a high quality thinset mortar. The manufacturer’s literature will outline if it is appropriate for indoors or outdoors as well as for floors and walls.
It is important that each pebble is embedded in adhesive, however they should not be pressed deeply into the adhesive. Select a product suitable for application with a ¼” or 1/8” notched trowel and apply no more than three square feet of adhesive at a time.

Sealing and Grouting

It is recommended that the stones be sealed before and after grouting. For the best results use a good quality penetrating sealer. These types of penetrating sealers ordinarily do not change or alter the color of the pebbles. In order to enhance the color of the stones to a deeper matte or glossy finish it is suggested you use natural stone color enhancer or natural stone color and shine enhancer prior to applying the penetrating sealer. A sanded grout that is suitable for external or internal conditions which ever may be the case is recommended. Generally grouts are a water mix but where some flexibility may be needed then a latex additive or similar should be used in the water it is important to wait the interval recommended by the adhesive manufacturer before grouting to minimize dirt ingress between the pebble and avoid the opportunity for dislodging of pebbles grout a small area at a time.when grout has dried, use a stiff bristled brush to scrub excess grout.
After removing most of the grout with a brush use a grout sponge to continue removing grout until the desired finish is achieved.

Pebble Mosaic Tile Control Joints

Joints can be easily formed with two angles, sealant and bond-breaker between them designers may show points at which joints are needed and they are certainly required where tiles join walls or some other building material in the substrate a tile saw may be used to fit edges or corners you can also flip the tile over and cut the desired edge or shape with a sharp cutting instrument OR take individual pebbles off the mesh to fill the gaps ordering extra sheets of tile may be useful for this.

Sealers and Cleaning

It is recommended that the pebbles be sealed with a quality impregnator before grouting and again after the grout has dried completely. To maintain ease of maintenance of natural stone it is recommended that sealants be applied every 2-3 years. Whenever using sealants and cleaners, ensure you follow the manufacturers recommended method of application. The pebbles can be cleaned with neutral mild detergents. The porosity or water absorption in pebbles (natural stone) varies, and therefore staining will occur in different degrees if the stone is unsealed consequently, any spills should be cleaned quickly to lessen the degree of the stain and sealers are highly recommended.

Maybe you just want a little color with texture on top then having a tiled table or counter top will be perfect in this case.  If you prefer not having the tile so permanent and all over then setting it in one place that is movable and yet still carries the designs and colors you would like then the tiled table is what you need.  However,  if you would like just a splash of tile that is set within the home but not everywhere then the tiled counter top might be a better choice.  It would have  a similar appeal like with the table yet it would be a permanent fix within your home.

Growing up in Colorado, and Arizona my mother always had a southwestern decorating style. From the beautiful rust and golden yellows on our walls to the Native American hand crafted pottery, rugs and jewelery that she admired and adorned our home in, I’ve always been exposed and loved artisan culture and home decor. One year I remember my parents renting a U-Haul trailer to drive to Sante Fe, New Mexico to purchase one-of-a-kind hand painted floor tiles for our Colorado mountain home. At the time, I thought they were crazy! Today, I realize what a passion they had for gorgeous, handcrafted home decor.

Today, Bill Buyok, owner of Avente Tile (Avente LLC) and primary contributor for the company’s blog, Avente Tile Talk, joins me to discuss his tile showroom that specializes in hand painted tile from Spain. Why did you start Avente Tile LLC, and how did you come up with the gorgeous name?

AVENTE TILE:

I started Avente Tile because I was looking for hand painted tiles with an old world design similar to some I had seen from Spain.  I couldn’t find any designs in local showrooms, tile stores, or online.  Once I found the right tiles, I fell in love with them and decided I would start a company to sell them.

Our namesake, Avente, is derived from the Latin abante that means “before” or “at the forefront.” Avente LLC (“Avente Tile“) is dedicated to providing handcrafted tiles that are at the forefront of their class.

There are so many varieties of tile on your site, what is your suggestion to Stagetecture reader’s who are trying to find the perfect tile for their home?

AVENTE TILE:

Additionally, there is information to share regarding new products.

What is your favorite part about Avente, and where do you hope to see it grow to in the future?

AVENTE TILE:

I love everything about my job. Honestly!  I do have two favorites.  I enjoy getting to tour the factories and meet the factory owners and artisans that create our handcrafted tiles.  And, there is nothing more satisfying than hearing from a customer that is thrilled with the installation – that’s what it’s all about.

Our goal is to keep growing while providing the same level of service to our customers.  We are always looking for new tile lines to include in our collection and our excited about the growth in cement tile sales.

One of the most worthwhile upgrades to your home is flooring. Whether it is upgrading to wood, or tile, resilient flooring is well worth it and not difficult to install.  Today on DIY Saturday at Stagetecture we are learning about installing ceramic floor tile. Read on to see what tools and materials you need, as well as a You Tube video to walk you through the steps.

Materials you will need:

• Cement Board
• Tile Sheets
• Tile Adhesive

Tools you will need:

• Wet saw
• Square-notched trowel
• Tile nippers
• Utility knife
• Tape measure

Step 1: Take Measurements of the Room

Begin by taking measurements of the room.

Step 3: Lay Out the Pieces

Once all the pieces are cut, lay them out on the floor to make sure it’s a snug fit.

Step 4: Secure the Cement Board

Secure the cement board to the floor using a screw-gun or cordless drill with screwdriver attachment. Use special cement-board screws, and place them every 6 to 8 inches.

Tip:

You can start the screws in the cement board by tapping the tip in with a hammer. Then use the screw gun to set the screws fully.

Step 6: Lay Out the Tile

The patterned tile comes in sheets that are about 1-foot square. The individual tiles are attached on the underside with rubber “dots.” The dots serve two purposes: they hold the tiles together in the patterned sheets and also act as spacers to create even grout lines. The rubber dots are easy to cut through when it’s necessary to separate tiles.

Lay out the tile using as many full sheets as possible.

Step 8: Set the Sheet of Tiles in Place

Set the first sheet of tiles into place and press it firmly into the adhesive. For the second sheet, remember to line up the pattern and check the spacing and then set it into place.

Step 9: Cover the Center of the Floor

Work around the room until the entire center of the floor is covered.

Step 10: Cover the Perimeter of the Room

For the perimeter of the room, trim full sheets to fit. We started at the door and worked our way around, measuring and cutting tiles and sheets as necessary to fill the area.

Step 11: Cut the Tile

The easiest way to cut tile is with a wet saw. It uses water to keep the blade from getting too hot as it makes the cuts. Set the length wanted and guide the tile through the blade. Rent a wet saw for this project from a local rental center. Just remember to get safety gear and follow proper safety precautions as well.

Step 12: Helpful Tips

To cut a tile sheet, flip it over and use a utility knife to cut the rubber dots, then pop out the piece. This technique is handy to cut out a piece of tile to fit around the toilet or any plumbing pipes

If you have any small cuts buy a pair of tile nippers. The key to working with these is to be patient and cut off a little bit at a time

When mixing grout make sure it is creamy and easy to spread. Using the tile sheets, put grout onto the tiles then spread it with a rubber grout float. Let it set for about 20 minutes then wipe the tiles with a damp sponge. Once the grout has hardened, wipe off the haze and buff the tiles with a dry cloth
Make sure to seal the grout to help keep it clean. For new grout, wait a week to 10 days then apply a silicone sealer. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the sealer product selected.

I’m always looking for new ways to add color, and comfort into home decor ideas.  Today I came across these beautiful images for floor pillows! Do you use floor pillows in your home?  I love how the following rooms look like they can be casual and relaxed, but not sacrificing great design!

I enjoy the versatility of floor pillows. Depending on the season and the time of year – pillows could change easily with pillow covers. I can easily see this space in the fall and winter, with deep oranges and browns.

Neutral tone pillows seem to blend in with decor, effortlessly.

Pillows outside for casual entertaining and relaxing is a nice way to enjoy the outdoors. I love this gated screen that acts as ‘walls’ for this outdoor room.

What inspires you? Even if it’s nontraditional, I challenge you to find new ways to reinvent your home. It should never be boring!
