Your decor is just as unique as you are, and sometimes it’s hard to find house-ready houseplants that fit with your scheme. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. You can incorporate houseplants into your home and take advantage of the benefits they bring—extra oxygen and improved mood—no matter how you’ve chosen to decorate your home.

Brighten your home with interiors plants

Image via: Eric Figge Photography

[ad#co-1]

Here’s how:

Analyze Your Decor

Every room is unique, but all styles share common and identifiable design elements. What elements does your room have? Is there a little English cottage and midcentury modern? Colonial and Moroccan? Oriental and Art Deco? There are so many combinations you could have in your home, so start with identifying the elements you have.

Now do your research and find plants that fit with those elements, and your color scheme. If your room has three or more elements, pick one element you want to emphasize; either the one that’s least emphasized or your favorite one—maybe you want to emphasize it more! If there are just two easily identifiable décor elements in your room, it’s best to pick two plants that fit with those elements; you could put daffodils and Persian Buttercups in a room that evokes both Wordsworth’s country cottage and a Moroccan bazaar.

Stage the Plants

Go into the room you’ve chosen the plants for. Where do you envision yourself putting these plants?

Is the room warm? Good, that’s as it should be. Is there a lot of direct sunlight? If not, that’s okay; you’ll just have to buy some grow lights to give your plants the light they need.

Decide how you want to stage your plants in one pot? A series of three? One long box? Think about it, picture it in your mind, and buy your pots according to the picture you like the most.

Brighten your home with plants

Image via: Joshua McHugh

Pick a Pot (or Three?)

Potting is an important step—a poorly chosen pot will stick out like a rat in any room. Don’t just go with the (likely green) plastic pot it came in—make the effort to find a pot that works as well with your décor as the plant you have chosen.

You must begin with the end in mind when choosing pots. Look at the room and decide

You can look at craft and other home goods stores, you can look at thrift shops, you can look online—there are so many cool places to find unique containers for your houseplants! Depending on what you have in mind, your planters and pots may be easier or more difficult to find; midcentury modern is much easier to find than, say, Victorian.

Then simply repot your plant, either completely or by putting the first pot into your new pot. And now you have lovely houseplants that fit with your décor!

Your kitchen has the most number of surfaces. tools and equipment at home that can cause a potential for getting ill. Keeping your kitchen clean and healthy for your family can feel overwhelming and can get expensive. Whether you need more storage to house kitchenware, or you want eco-friendly ways to keep a healthy kitchen, today’s tips should help.

Although lots of home chores are done in your kitchen, it is not an excuse to have it messy and cluttered. It should be kept clean and organized. Here are some healthy home kitchen ideas if you are on a tight budget:

Bring in greenery

Having potted plants can definitely bring life to your kitchen and cleaner air. You may choose from herbs to bring some life to your cooking and to add an aroma to the air. Basil, thyme, and rosemary make easy container gardens for a kitchen windowsill. A gardenia is a great choice if you like to have a corsage-like white flower with fine fragrance. You can also try the dazzling foliage plants that are so attractive day in and day out. Having household plants as your primary decorations are inexpensive and refreshing to the eyes.

Be more eco-friendly

Always consider buying kitchen products that are made from recycled materials like stainless steel and glass. For example, a stainless steel sink is actually made from up to 60% recycled materials. Consider eco-friendly decor such as an eco-friendly jute rug. There are several jute rugs that are made from natural fibers like the hand-woven flat-braided jute rug.

Image via

Choose convenient storage

Choose innovative storage solutions that brings utensils up off of the counter such as racks, and hooks to hold kitchen utensils. This will free up space on your kitchen countertop and storage cabinets. Also consider hanging pot racks and magnetic cutlery racks to keep utensils at arms-reach but also clean and germ free.

A healthy kitchen is awaiting you with these simple ideas for putting plants, eco-friendly products and convenient storage options throughout your kitchen. Whether you are moving into a new home, or trying to keep your existing kitchen safe and healthy, use these ideas to make the heart of the home the healthiest room to be in!

Entry #1012, March 12, 2012

Whether you have a large sprawling lawn with a garden attached or you have a small piece of patio space, creating a relaxing garden spot in your backyard can be easier than you think. Gathering the essentials, such as comfortable seating or lounge furniture, greenery in your favorite colors and aromas, and decorating with familiar garden accessories will make your garden spot personable and relaxing. Here’s how to create your relaxing garden area.

Choose a variety of seating options:

Remember when garden furniture was all metal and not very diverse? Today the sky is the limit and creating a relaxing garden spot should include your favorite garden furniture, and leisure items. A hammock strung between two trees, floor pillows, cushioned wrought iron garden furniture, and a beautiful umbrella to keep the sun at bay from your relaxing spot. Similarly to your interiors of your home, look for outdoor fabrics and furniture options to bring the indoors out.

Choose relaxing furniture and lounging pieces for your garden spot

Image via: House to Home

Bring the garden to your patio:

If your patio or deck area is your backyard, you can still bring the same ambiance of relaxation and serenity to your small space. Choose potted plants that add texture, varying heights, and foliage that is full of color and aroma to surround the patio. Choose garden furniture that has vibrant colors and decorate with lanterns, garden wall accents on the exterior of the house, and bring out all-weather carpeting to soften up concrete and hard surfaces underfoot.

Don’t have a garden, bring it to your patio!

Image via: Nikkay27.Tumblr

Personalize with pieces of you:

Often times we try and make our outdoor home reflect what we see in magazines and home and garden blogs but we leave a piece of ourselves out of the scenario. Creating a relaxing garden spot is also about bringing pieces of you and your family into the garden. If you have artisan wares from your last family vacation that will do well outside, use them as planters. Try softening hard surfaces outside with all-weather curtains and personal touches like throw pillows, eclectic furniture found at your favorite yard sale and more. You will be surprised how relaxing your garden area is when you bring yourself outside.

Personalize your outdoor garden area

Image via: 1Kindesign

Your relaxing garden spot is easier to achieve than you once thought! Use these helpful tips to personalize and make more comfortable your outdoor home. Start with gorgeous foliage and plants, and then bring in furniture and seating that you could spend all day reading a book in. You will love how your garden space may become the favorite space of your entire home!

The end of February is around the time when most of us start getting Spring Fever. We are officially done with the cold winter temperatures, and staying cooped up in the house! This time of the year is the perfect time to consider what to do with your patio before the warm weather hits. Getting rid of the winter slush and adding color to your patio is a great place to start! Here are tips to prepare your outdoor patio for spring’s arrival.

Prepare your patio for the spring!

Image via: Crowders

Clean and refresh:

Before you already plan where to set your lemonade and garden furniture, get rid of the winter dirt and grime. Remove all your furniture and pressure wash your deck or concrete patio to remove debris from the winter. Your patio may only need a good sweeping to remove fallen branches and leaves, but make sure your patio is clean and ready for spring additions. This is an excellent time to make repairs. Whether you have a loose decking floorboard, or you have nails that are starting to lift, inspect your patio for signs of wear and repair before the spring weather settles in.

Add color and comfort:

Even if you can’t put out the furniture cushions yet, pull them out of storage and give them a good cleaning. If they are sun damaged, or you want a new color and look to your furniture, check your garden stores now. Many garden centers offer lower costs on patio furniture and decor when out of season! This can be a great advantage for you and your patio. If you live in a climate where the weather is starting to warm up, consider what type of flowering plants you can use in planters to add instant color to your patio. Lastly, consider re-staining your wood deck, and adding colorful all-weather area rugs to soften up the hardscape of your outdoor patio area.

Add color and a burst of life to your patio this spring

Image via: Apartment Therapy

Spring is around the corner and you’re just in time to prepare it for the leisurely months ahead for you and your family. From cleaning out debris that winter has left behind, to adding color with textiles and plants, your patio will be welcoming in spring before you know it. Once you get the patio ready, you may be ready to tackle spring maintenance of your exterior home!
