7 Guest Room Ideas to Prepare your Holiday Home

1. Before your Guest Room, Focus on Indoor Repairs and Maintenance

The holidays are a time of celebration, food and family get-togethers. Although most people focus on setting the perfect holiday table, you don’t want your home to feel unappealing when having guests stay with you. If you own your own home, you probably have an endless list of things to-do. You can begin by painting rooms that look worn or distressed, especially if your parents or other loved ones will be staying in a guest room. It’s also the ideal time to have carpets and rugs cleaned to remove odors and stains. If you have a dripping faucet or the showerheads experience low water pressure, it’s the opportune time to tackle the odd jobs.

2. Decluttering Guest Room Ideas: Clean Out Your Closets

If it’s been awhile since you’ve cleaned your closets, before your guests arrive is an ideal time to get rid of items you no longer use. From towels and clothes to shoes and coats, you want to have plenty of room for your holiday visitors to store their own belongings while they stay with you. You could donate the goods you have no use for to a charitable organization. If you plan on keeping your personal belongings, store them in the basement or attic until your guest’s depart. Try these decluttering closet tips to clean out your closets.

3. Does your Holiday Home Have Enough Supplies?

Although your visitors will probably bring their own toiletries and essentials, you want to ensure that you’re properly prepared. Stock up on shampoos, toothpaste, toothbrushes and soap in case they forgot something at home. You should also launder your sheets, pillow cases, and towels before your guest’s visit, so their linens smell fresh and clean. If you’re short on household goods, stock up on pillows, towels, and other goodies.

4. Guest Room Ideas – Furniture Should be Assessed:

Whether you have several family members or a household coming to stay, you want to assess your furniture needs. Several guest rooms can accommodate a number of family members. You can also have siblings share a room until after your guests leave. Daybeds, sleeping bags, and blow up mattresses also come in handy and are best suited for children and younger adults. A nice touch to add when you’re having guests over for the holidays is to make the guest room comfortable. You can also have coffee, hot chocolate and holiday cookies served in the afternoon or evening.

6. Clean-up Your Holiday Home Curb Appeal

When your guests stay over in your home, you may be more focused on the interior than your dwelling’s exterior. But the home’s curb appeal is the first thing your guests are going to see upon arrival. That’s why it’s important to pay special attention to the outside too. Focus on important areas such as repaving to improve curbside appeal of your home. A driveway in disrepair fails to look aesthetically pleasing. Plus, the cracks and buckled pavement can also become a tripping hazard to your guests. Your home’s exterior should also be well-lit and seasonal furniture stored neatly away. For Your Recreational Purposes

Haven’t you or your spouse ever had plans or ideas on making your kid’s rooms to something you all wanted for yourselves? Such as, a home office that you get you work done in or a place you wanted to start your own business in. Perhaps, you even have hobbies and would like to make it a hobby room for enjoyment. Like a sewing room, a library for the house or even a man cave. The choices are endless. Some have gone as far as merging the room with the master room in order to create a master suite.

A Guest Room

Turn your old kid’s rooms into rooms for your guests. Friends and family love to visit one another and especially with the holidays around the corner it would be great to have a space designated for them. Just remove anything that was your kids, add in (if not already there) a full sized bed, a storage rack, dresser and clean/open closet space. Try having a neutral color palette, with mixture of white linens around this will help to create an organic and inviting feel to the space. This can also work both ways if the child is in college and comes home for the summer semester, they still have a place to sleep and it won’t have to be your sofa.

Perhaps Juts a Simple Upgrade

Maybe, your child hasn’t moved out but rather grown out of the style of their old room and just wants an upgrade to fit their current style. Typically, if the child is bold enough to come to you about their room being to childish then they may have some ideas of their own. So like you would do with any renovation, remold or revamping- discuss the budget, the ideas and set the time frame. Let them show you which way they want to go and of course the choice is really yours about what will actually be ok for their room in your house. It could be a new paint job or just a new comforter set.

We love our kids dearly, but sometimes we may not be so gun-ho about all of their things they like to leave with us.  You don’t have to let those rooms fall by the wayside, now you have the opportunities to do what you want within your home.  So get creative and think out of the box.  Make your kid’s rooms your rooms again.  And above are some ways on how.

‘Preparing your Holiday Guest Room’    Adele Baumann Healey

The holidays are the time of year our guest rooms are put to good use, a comfortable, well thought out room is always appreciated. Where a person rests their head is so important, so let’s start with pillows.

Holiday Guest Room Ideas

Some people like soft pillows, others like firm, some prefer thick and then there are those who feel most comfortable on thin, so a range of pillows to choose from would be most appreciated. Not only are extra blankets a good idea, but how about a throw for those who like to take a little nap or just want to rest their eyes during the day? Beside the bed, be sure to have a carafe of water and a glass so your guests can have it handy during the night and not have to stumble to the bathroom to quench their thirst. Also, a box of tissues may be needed for those who suffer from allergies or are fighting a cold. Speaking of allergies, fresh flowers are always a special touch, but if you suspect they may be allergic to pollen, green plants or silk flowers will fit the bill.

Don’t forget to have taller lamps by the bed (or wall sconce’s) so people will be able to read before sleeping if they care to. At the foot of the bed, or somewhere in the room, be sure to have a luggage rack or bench where luggage can be placed. Many do not like to have their suitcase on the floor, plus it is much easier to get into when placed higher.

Warm up their holiday guest room with amenities

Consider using window coverings that block out any night time light. Many people have a difficult time sleeping if the room is not completely dark. Use drapes, shades or blinds that can be opened during the day so your guests enjoy a nice, sunlit room, and then closed at night for a sleep inducing environment.

On the dresser, place a pretty tray, not only does it look special, it provides guests somewhere to place their jewellery, watches, wallets or other small items and the owners will know exactly where they placed them. A small sewing kit may be the perfect answer for a loose button or a torn hem. Just place needles, threads, double sided tape and small scissors in a pretty box or even a canning jar, and it’s ready to be used.

Create storage area for your guests

Be sure to have emptied out a few drawers so company has the option to place their clothing out of site. Let’s not forget that closet! Make sure it is tidy and fresh smelling, make plenty of empty space available for those who like to hang their clothes. Offer your guests the use of nice plastic or felt covered hangers, so things hang neatly and do not slide to the floor. Having a soft, fluffy robe waiting for them in the closet is a great way to say “Welcome”!. If you do not have a dresser or chest of drawers, place baskets or bins in a bookshelf.

If you are using a study as a guest room, don’t forget those amazing Murphy beds. By having them closed during the year, there will be more room in the office or study, but upon lowering, you will always have a private place available for those who visit.  Try not to have too many accessories on table and dresser tops. A few special accent pieces will create a beautiful space while not overpowering the room.

If you just have a tiny room for company, remember – a comfy bed is most appreciated. You can always place a straight backed wooden chair next to the bed where people can place items they want near them, and a wall sconce will give a good source of light without needing a table. Plan ahead and then step back and enjoy your visitors (and hopefully everyone will sleep well).

The walls

Painting the walls in bright colors is a great way to add life to a room. However, you don’t have to stick to traditional blue and pink colors for boy’s and girl’s respectively. Red walls can be very exciting, whereas green or yellow can create a calming effect. If painting is not an option, you can adorn the walls with your grandchild’s most impressive pieces of art. If your little one is not an artist, take some time to find out his/her area of interest. His/her favorite Disney or cartoon posters will also do the trick.

Furniture

Staying organized is often a challenge with little ones. So, create plenty of storage space that’s easy to access. Shelves with rounded corners and plastic or canvas bins that are low to the ground will help them put toys and books in the right spot. For sleep time, a bunk bed or a loft style bed is always a safe bet. You can also pop in some movable seating arrangements like beanbags or mats for a comfortable spread out.

Fun with fabrics

Bed sheets, rugs, curtains, and pillow covers can have a major impact in a bedroom; so, pick up kid friendly designs such as animal or geometric prints. A night lamp in interesting colors is a must for youngsters. Alternatively, wall lighting in sun, moon, or star shapes can be really fun and exciting.

Creating a fun bedroom for grandchildren is a way to get them excited for a stay back at your home. If possible, invite them to update the room with you. As you complete, you both will have memories that will last a lifetime!

Although engaging in home renovations might sound like an expensive or painstaking process, switching up your home design doesn’t have to break the bank or cause undue stress. You don’t have to spend a lot of money or time to reimagine a room that was once occupied by children or a surplus of household goods. Whether you use your spare bedroom for exercise, work, or recreation, get the most out of a space that is now empty and available. Here are a few ideas for rooms you can create.

1. Home gym

Setting up a personal gym is a great way to add convenience to your life and eliminate any excuses you might have for never getting to the gym. Treadmills or ellipticals will help you with your cardio routine, just as a yoga mat, hand weights, and stability ball aid in core strengthening. Save yourself membership fees, the need to pack (or even have) a gym bag, and having to use scratchy, over-bleached towels. Install laminate floors or carpet squares and add a fresh coat of paint to the walls in a shade that will invigorate you and inspire regular workouts. Work out in peace, knowing that you can walk, run, lift, or stretch at your own pace.

2. Creative zone

Everyone needs a good getaway room where they can do some writing, organize family photos, meditate, or manage an art-based business. If you have young children, think about making the room an adults-only space to help it stay a calm place where you can go for some private time to work or create. If setting up a home-based business, your home improvement costs might just be tax-deductible. Turn a closet into a place for shelving, supply storage, or even for a file cabinet. If the closet is big enough, you can take off the doors and push a small desk inside to maximize a small space.

3. Game room

A game room is great when it comes time to hang out with friends or family. Consider game-themed decorations, like Scrabble pillows or a Twister mat replica painted on the floor. Accessories like a pool table with a table tennis cover, a folding table and chairs for a card or board game, or a dartboard will all go to great use. You might even be interested in including retro arcade games and couple of recliners for a proper man cave feel. Should you put your home on the market in the future, a nice set-up can make your home very attractive to potential buyers who will likely imagine themselves competing in a billiards tournament or racking up a triple-word Scrabble score.

Whatever you end up doing with your newfound space, make sure it’s a place where you feel comfortable. Don’t skimp; make the most of a fresh design opportunity. Just remember that a restyle doesn’t necessarily mean laying out hundreds of dollars. Start with fresh paint, new-to-you furniture in good condition from a thrift store, and accents in a complementary color. Before you know it, your spare bedroom will become new again.

Once a while all of us turn a host to a friend, relative or make some dinner invites to our work friends, friends of other people dear to us. Anytime we do this we are keen to let them experience our elaborate hospitality and we are always delighted to keep and see them happy. Let’s say if you invite someone to your home for a dinner, you will really be sure to make tastiest dishes, arrange your living, guest area, dining and tidy every part of your home or at least the social part of your home.

Preparing your home

But is it only the taste of the food you serve or tidiness of the space you are with your guest while you receive them.  Then you have a nice old time chatting, enjoy your meal and sit relax sipping that exquisite wine you got. What I’m trying to tell you is that it’s not these things alone you should be doing, if you want to be a good host. There are of course few things all of us forget, not purposefully, but we don’t actually give a thought about such things. I could find many who would forget about the guest bathroom, any guest could use this anytime when they are at your place, even they are there just for the dinner. But if they do have payed a visit to stay a couple days, you should be sure that you tidy up your house in full, clean up any mess you got anywhere and be sure to arrange the guest room and don’t forget the bathroom as well.

Guest Rooms

Guest rooms we all got would just remain dormant, until only a guest arrives we might only think about such a room existed in our place. If you dust and tidy up your rooms on a regular basis, this is okay that you won’t be leaving your guest room unclean. So when a guest arrives, not much of cleanings you would need to find it beautiful. Now that you have a guest and you need to make some warm welcome for them and ensure that they be happy throughout the stay.

Guest Bathrooms

Clean the room, dust and change the bed spreads, pillow covers and let it look warm and welcoming. Now in most cases as the guest rooms are not used often, so are their bathrooms, you would want to do more of checking in there. If unused for quite long, you would want to do some good cleaning and check for damages or repairs.  Check your guest bathrooms and see if all fixtures are working good, check your bathroom exhaust fans, heater, plumbing or other accessories working good, change them or get it repaired if you find any issues. How about your shower curtains, are they any good or you would want to change them. You can find cheap shower curtains if you do want to change. It’s good to be changing them if they stayed for too long and unused.

All together, you would want to do a thorough check up, but that’s not a big work to be doing, it’s just a bit of your time and that’s how to be a good host. No one fails on any requirements for a guest; we all love to keep them happy and do much as we can and good luck with your tasks ahead.

For DIY Saturday #25, I showed you how to create a welcoming guest room for your holiday guests. What if you don’t have a guest room? Here are some great suggestions from Apartment Therapy on what to do.

A guest room can be what you make it, and the physical walls of a room aren’t always necessary. Thanks Apartment Therapy, great information.

Sleeping surface

1. Pullout sofa

– Too hard or bar in the center? How about adding an egg crate foam mattress, a futon mattress or feather bed on top to cushion the blow?

2. Air mattress

– Is it easy to set up and take down? We have an Aerobed, and I highly recommend it. More expensive than some of the other versions out there, but it totally pays for itself in ease and speed of use. Also, think about what will need to be moved in order to make space for an air mattress in the room. Plan in advance where to move things so that when the time comes, set-up is a snap (and guests don’t feel like they’re an inconvenience).

3. Sleeping on the floor

– Sometimes, clearing a space on the floor is the best you can do…and that’s ok. Again, the trick is to make it as comfortable of an experience as possible. Do you have removable sofa cushions you could arrange into a makeshift bed? (Sounds crazy, I know, but a good friend of mine still raves about the sleep she got at another friend’s house sleeping on Ikea EXTORP cushions on the floor!) Or how about a feather bed, comforter, blanket or futon mattress to soften things up?

Linens, Blankets, Pillows & Towels

1. Linens –

Regardless of the sleeping surface, your guests are going to need ‘bed’ linens. Hopefully you have an extra set, but if you don’t – put them on your shopping list now. The problem with extra linens is that they usually aren’t used very often. Which means that no matter how clean they are, they’re likely to smell musty. Taking a few minutes to rectify this situation will go a long ways towards making your guest feel welcome. If you have a dryer, toss them in with a dryer sheet to fluff them up and rid them of their crammed-in-a-closet smell. If you don’t, spray them down with a little Febreze, air dry and fold.

2. Blankets–

If possible, it’s good to provide your guests with a couple of options when it comes to blankets. Having options allows your guests to balance the room temperature, their choice in sleeping attire and their personal comfort level for themselves. Blankets can also get musty, and should be freshened in the same manner as the linens.

3. Pillows–

Like sleeping temperature, pillow comfort is very subjective. If possible, provide guests with at least two pillows, of varying softness to use. Some may use one, and some may use two, but all will appreciate having a choice.

4. Towels–

If possible, provide your guest with a full set of towels. Freshen them if needed, as you did the blankets and linens. Let your guest know where they can hang the towels when they’re wet and make sure to review any peculiarities of your plumbing in advance.

Light & Privacy

Often the space that your guests will be using isn’t normally used for sleeping. As a result, it may be brighter or less private than would be comfortable that purpose. Analyzing the street lights outside the window at night, the daylight streaming in in the morning and the view into the space from outside can help you determine where to position the head of the ‘bed’ and let you know if additional window coverings are needed. My favorite solutions are temporary pleated paper blinds or expensive Ikea panels and tension rods. A panel and tension rod can also be used to create a privacy ‘door’ if one does not exist (i.e. in a doorway between the living room and kitchen, etc.)

Luggage & Clothes Storage

Even if you don’t have a guest room, it’s nice to give guests a little space of their own for their luggage clothes, and bed linens. An extra chair can easily be called into use as a luggage stand, and an over-the-door hook can provide guests hanging space even when your closets are filled to capacity. Designate an easy to access, but out of the way corner to tuck away linens, pillows, etc. when not in use.

The Extras

– It’s the little things that really make your guests feel welcome. Clearing off an end table or creating a temporary nightstand out of a stack of books and a tray gives you a place to provide some niceties and your guest a place to put small personal items.

2. Reading Material

– Select a few magazines and a book (short stories work best) for your guest in case they’d like to relax and read while staying with you. Help them get the lay of the land by providing a map and a guide of the area. I also keep a City Walks of my city on hand so that my guests can pick a card, pick a neighborhood, and venture out on their own if they’d like.

3. Flowers

-Flowers are the ultimate indulgence and a single bloom in a bud vase on your temporary ‘nightstand’ conveys a loving and thoughtful message to your guest. Don’t have any flowers on hand? Check the crisper drawer in your fridge. Fresh herbs are an excellent stand-in. I once used a handful of fresh poultry herbs in an inexpensive votive holder – it looked and smelled amazing!

4. Water

-You’ve seen it many times before, a lovely carafe of water and drinking glass on the bedside table in a guest room. It’s a great idea, and your guests will appreciate having their own water handy in the middle of the night. Rather than stress about having the perfect carafe though, be creative! I use an empty white wine bottle with the label removed and a cork. (You can buy reusable corks online for super cheap, or better yet, use the bottle stopper you already have!) For the glass, I use a small, trusty Ikea bistro glass.

5. Snacks

– It’s nice if you can leave a couple of non-perishable snacks like fruit, granola bars, pretzels, etc. at the ready for your guests. That way, if they get munchy late at night they won’t feel like they have to trouble you for something.

6. Breakfast–

-Depending on the occasion and your relationship to your guests, you may all eat breakfast together. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have several easy to prepare breakfast foods on hand. (If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that people get hungry at different times in the morning.) Having cereal, yogurt or bagels available will allow your guests to grab something on their own (even if it’s only to hold them over until the pancake extravaganza begins). Also, review operations and options for coffee and tea with your guests the night before. Then, if they get up earlier than you, (as may happen, especially if their internal clock is on a different time zone), they can help themselves.

A Guest room is a place that you welcome your guest showing your love and care. If there is an extra bedroom or living room you can create it as a perfect guest room by decorating and furnishing with all the comforts that you can provide to make your guests feel relaxed.

When you have guest, remember that they are way from their home and no one is comfortable outside. So you have to take utmost care to make them feel at home. There are many ways to make your guests to stay with you and enjoy their time.

Thoughtful Little Things:

The room could be filled with a sense of humor so guests feel very excited and glad to stay. The guest room could have a shelf with magazines showing your thoughtfulness of your invited guests as implying them that they are made bored even a second. You could keep extra pillows, blankets and extra toilet paper for their reach, so that they don’t have to ask you for anything.

Color:  

The color of the guest makes the guest extra impressive to stay. Different shades of colors can really give a great feeling of wanting to come often. When you make your home, you always wanted to color your house in different colors, but went for the more conventional ones just to be safe, right? You can use all your creativity in your Guest room and no one will complain!

Convenience: 

Provide the room with the all the required features which the guest prefer like, a desk or small table to write or keep small articles, provide with blankets, towels, and also a small dressing table with mirror to get ready, a spacious cupboard to keep their clothes and baggage.

Decorating or furnishing the room gives a delightful feeling. Cozy bed, and wardrobe, mirrored nightstands, bedhead boards, light fixtures. etc add more effect to room.

If you want to try something traditional, you could use some wooden furniture or maybe mirrored nightstands. Mirrored night stands are an important piece of furniture which classy and elegant look for the room. Its is a desk rather than in wood its made of glass on sides also maybe on top. The number of mirrors arranged differ as its a kind of decorative furniture which is made to impress the guests by changing the outlook of the room and making it spacious.

If you choose to use headboards for the bed, it should be designed in such a way that the shape, size, color, frame, etc should go along with the bed making it more appealing. Headboards in metal, leather, suede, pine, oak, white wood and upholstered fabric headboards are available.

Light fixtures are not only makes your room decorative but also just amazing with the effect of light. First you have to decide upon the light fixture that whether that should be very expensive or big one. It should suit the style of your room. Light Fixtures fall into the fancy department, and hence tend to be really expensive, but if you look around, you could find many cheap light fixtures as well.
