Disclosure: I was offered a complimentary limited edition artwork print from Minted. All views and opinions are uniquely mine.

Have you ever wondered how your office desk can start off being the most organized location and 6 years later you only have enough space for your computer to fit? Well sadly that has been my home office desk story for the last few years of Starting Stagetecture. When I first started I had just a roll around printer desk with my “Carrie Bradshaw – Sex in the City” iconic black Apple laptop that was as slow as molasses! You couldn’t tell me anything, because I was excited to be starting my own business and nothing could stop me.

I’m remembering back to when I attended the Haven Conference in Atlanta, Georgia in 2015, and saw one of the sponsors was Minted – “A New Kind of Print Shop Built Around Artists”. I was given a complimentary print and the chance to refresh my home office and I thought in my head, “YES!!! Finally an excuse to declutter my home office.”

Refreshing My Home Office with Minted Limited Edition Artwork

[ad#co-1]

Choosing my Minted – Limited Edition Artworks

I was excited to see that Minted is based around artists and you can read about each artist, their philosophy to their designs, and then choose which one fits your decorative style and space you’re going to display it.

About Minted:

Minted is a design marketplace that connects you with independent artists to create something one-of-a-kind.

All artworks are printed on museum-quality paper and available in a wide array of sizes and framing options.

Minted sells the work of independent artists from 43 different countries and the crowdsourcing model enables anyone, anywhere, to submit designs for its challenges.

When I went perusing through Minted’s limited edition artworks I was immediately drawn to pictures of mountains and western colors that I miss from my childhood growing up in Colorado.

I chose Holly Royval who “…has painted her whole life and is endlessly inspired by her beautiful state of Colorado with its bright, bold colors.”

Holly Royval, Artist – from Denver, Colorado

Minted Artist – Holly Royval

Holly’s Sundrop artwork is what I chose for my home office and you’ll be able to see the transformation below.

Breathing Life Back into My Home Office

When organizing your office, especially when you live at home, you’ll need to part with items that don’t really need to be kept anymore. For me – catalogs, home decor magazines from 2009, every craft that my daughter has made since she was 2…. you know STUFF! After 4 hours of purging, sorting, dusting, and organizing I was able to shed the pounds from my overly bloated office and showcase my new Minted artwork in my office.

Another great source for artwork is ArtFund for perking up your home office!

I especially love the colors of Sundrop that “…takes inspiration from the radial patterns of a puddle with drops of new water, this painting is lively and happy.” The colors compliment my sage green walls in my office beautifully and I chose the distressed charcoal stain frame from Minted to compliment my desktop.

Thanks Minted for helping me refresh my home office with Holly’s beautiful artwork and a little elbow grease and organization!

Whether you’ve found your new home or are looking to simply redecorate an existing one, your bathroom is among one of the key rooms to consider as first in line to tackle. After all you find yourself in there every day – morning, throughout the day and night too. It’s one of those rooms that you simply need to get right in order to feel comfortable in it and this can come down to something as simple as the basics or even those extra little touches that while not necessary really add to the overall feel of your bathroom.

How to Add Finishing Touches In Your Bathroom

Create a gorgeous bathroom with unique finishing touches

[ad#co-1]

Organizing your Bathroom with Storage Ideas

Storage of smaller products on your bathroom counter such as your hair gels, toothpaste, deodorant cans, hair brushes and so on is essential in order to keep things tidier and neater. Why is this so important? Mornings have a tendency to be fairly hectic especially on days of work where we are often in a rush to get out the door. Having to tussle through waves of cans and bottles to find what we need can be a pain and knowing where the essentials are immediately can result in a far less stressful environment to deal with. Something as simple as a soap dish can keep the slippery bar from being left to slide all around the sink’s surface. If of course you’re not a fan of the old fashioned bars of soap then a soap dispenser holder might be for you instead. Bring a certain hotel-style classiness to your bathroom.

Bathroom storage behind closed cabinetry can add a custom look

Image via: Refined LLC

Keep Towels Tidy and Displayed Beautifully

Towels are the cause of many an argument. Where do they go? Why are they left on the floor? This can all be avoided with some basic additions to the bathroom. The obvious first choice is towel holders of which there are a couple of options. Handles are useful for simply threading through a single towel and can also be especially handy for smaller hand towels by the sink area. They don’t take up an awful lot of room and you can potentially have more than one. Then of course you have your racks which come in a number of flavours – individual for a single towel while you can also opt for the ladder alternative that can store anything from five to nine items at once. If you want that extra bit of oomph though, you can always invest in some heated ladders too, ideal for drying out used towels.

Your bathroom mirror can set the stage for the entire room

Image via: JD Smith Custom Homes

No bathroom would be complete without a mirror and it’s no wonder there are so many suppliers of them out there. ABL stocks Roma bathroom products such as mirrors for example, everything from hanging to standing as well as more expensive items such as sinks. Whether you like to admit it or not, we do spend a large chunk of time looking into our mirrors especially when it comes to getting ready it’s always important to find the right balance between style and practicality.

These are just a small handful of little extras that can help make any bathroom feel both homely and organized. Best of all they aren’t especially expensive to implement.

Note: I was asked to participate in the 2015 New Year Re-Design a Room Project sponsored by Del Mar Fans & Lighting. Although I have been compensated and provided with the lighting fixture, all opinions are my own.

2015 New Year Re-Design a Room Project – Updating My Foyer with Del Mar Fans & Lighting

Moving into my 1987 home five years ago was a joy. Moving from an ultra-modern 2007 built-home that lacked character and was too big for me and my hubby to keep up with led us to our current fixer-upper home that is charming in more ways than one. The downside of moving into a 1980’s home is embracing all of the outdated finishes and brass lighting fixtures that fill the house. My foyer with its vaulted ceiling has always been striking with the fresh green I painted the wall but the carriage chandelier lighting fixture has always been an eye sore!

All images: Stagetecture

[ad#co-1]

I was delighted to pair with the online lighting company, Del Mar Fans & Lighting to choose a fixture to give my foyer a facelift and bring modern appeal to my foyer.

Out with the old chandelier and in with a modern one!

I decided to play up the darker undertones of our wood floor and foyer table by choosing the modern Del Mar Fans & Lighting Kichler 2343OZ . I love the Olde Bronze finish and minimal detailing. I also chose this fixture for it’s adjustable stem length, as I knew my vaulted foyer ceiling might need extra length.

The REVEAL! My foyer looks like a modern home

I was extremely pleased with the finished result. The Olde Bronze finish stands out against the white, creamy yellow and green walls and the lights cast a soft glow as opposed to the bright beam the “candle” light bulbs used to cast.

Not only does the foyer look better, but also it gives a whole new dimension to our family room. Thanks Del Mar Fans and Lighting for helping me say goodbye to our retro brass foyer chandelier for a modern and sleek one!

If you are trying to transform an area of your home this year, consider replacing lighting fixtures. They are cheaper than a complete renovation or purchasing entire rooms of furniture. It’s amazing what one lighting fixture can do for a room!

The coziest homes are not necessarily the ones that have received the most expensive makeovers. While a designer’s touch can do wonders for a space, it’s not always affordable. However, the idea of having a nurturing space that can offer respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life is far too important to abandon just because our pockets are not deep enough. Instead, we can focus on smaller projects and make little improvements that can actually do tons of good to a home.

We’ve compiled some easy ways for you to start personalizing your home and give it a welcoming feel. Just remember: to achieve great things on a tight budget, you need to be creative.

Spruce up your home with these creative ideas

5 Easy Ways to Spruce up your Home on a Budget

Say it with color

Pale pastels and nature-like neutrals are known for having a positive effect on an occupant’s state of mind, hence their extensive use in interior design.

According to Pantone, which pretty much rules the world of color with their seasonal report on what’s hot and trending, this season is all about simplicity and natural inspiration. Aquamarine, soft blues, minty greens, and warm tangerine are good color options that will easily turn your home into a soothing retreat.

If you decide to go with a pastel color palette for your home, you can always use bold colors as accent. A brightly colored living room sofa can be easily used to add vigor and style to any interior.

Bring bold color into your interiors

Image via: Fringe Design

Lighting matters

For a home to be comfortable, it needs to be warm, airy, and well lit. If you’re lucky enough to have large windows, make sure they stay unobstructed for natural illumination. You can use some sheer drapery to add warmth to the room while still letting natural light in.

As for artificial light sources, the options are endless and range from highly decorative to totally functional, from low priced items to expensive pieces of art. Vintage stores and antique shops are a golden resource for those decorating on a budget.

Professional Tip: For contemporary home designs created with the busy professional in mind, use a combination of general lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting to achieve a practical and aesthetic effect.

Sometimes it’s all in the details

You can easily spruce up interiors by dressing up walls with expressive art or photo frames. Wall decals are also an inspired solution if you’re aiming for a quick makeover of a bedroom, for example. Wall art plus plush bedding and some cozy window furnishings can help you achieve that perfect spot for daydreaming.

Incorporate seasonal home décor

Autumn brings in a greater harvest than all the other seasons. We mean a harvest in terms of natural décor that you can use to revamp your quarters on a dime. Twigs, leaves and branches, pebbles, pumpkins and potted shrubs, all make ingenious home décor contributions that will render your home unique.

Ensure your interiors let in ample light

Image via: Point 2 Homes

Get your inspiration from nature

A smart idea that would help you transform your home without breaking the bank is to incorporate natural materials such as minimally processed woods, stones, and plant life, in your design scheme. More than just an aesthetic improvement, live greenery creates a healthier living environment for you and your family. Orchids make excellent home plants, being both vigorous and elegant, just like flamingo lilies and English ivy.

Also, when your budget is rather limited but you still want to give your interior décor the wow factor, consider introducing an exposed brick or a stone accent wall. These add both richness and an interesting vibe that will surely make your home stand out from the crowd.

Bring greenery into your interiors

Image via: Apartment Therapy

PS: When you embark on remodeling projects, whether seasonal adjustments or floor-to-ceiling revamps, it’s essential that you have a plan. Know exactly what you want to achieve with your re-design scheme and jot down all the steps to make sure you have all the necessary elements lined up.

Disclosure: I was compensated a set of duvet linens by Crane & Canopy for review. All opinions and statements are strictly my own.

Every year I am trying to find new ways to give my home a rebirth from the previous season. In the bathroom and kitchen areas, often a new set of bath linen and even bringing in fresh flowers to adorn the counter can be enough to give light to a space. This summer I was excited to pair with Crane & Canopy for a summer refresh of my guest bedroom! Our guest bedroom was in definite need of a perk up. It was still sporting Christmas quilt colors and was not resembling a welcoming summer guest room at all.

My Summer Refreshed Guest Bedroom with Crane & Canopy

There’s nothing like fresh bed linen to awaken your summer bedroom

Image via: Crane & Canopy

Fortunately, Crane & Canopy offers bed linen and bedding that is gorgeous in quality and selection, but without it costing a fortune as expected with high quality linen companies. I had my choice of their gorgeous duvet bedding collections and I opted for the Noe Blue Dot Cover set. The grayish blue and geometric pattern was enough to wake up my bedroom.

Receiving my Crane & Canopy Duvet Set

You know when you normally receive bedding through the mail it comes in a plastic bag that is less than pleasing? Well look what I was surprised with at my door.

A gorgeous wrapped duvet set awaits me with lavender!

Image via: Stagetecture

Luxury bedding that feels wonderful to the touch

The Noe Blue Dot Cover set I received felt heavenly to the touch, almost too soft to sleep on. It featured:

Luxurious 300-thread count

100% extra-long staple cotton

Your choice for ceilings finishes from Armstrong

Every home has a unique style and your lifestyle can help dictate what type of ceilings work best. I love the look of rustic finishes, so the wood plank varieties are especially nice – like the Woodhaven pictured here. For many homes, especially in basements where ductwork and beams may need to be concealed, a drop in ceiling is ideal to hide the mechanical and electrical work. The Drop panel ceiling tiles are ideal. Choose your choice of finishes and colors to meet your home’s decorative style. I like the TinCraft Squares pictured here.

Drop in ceilings are wonderful for basement renovations

A fireplace is not only a precious source of heat in winter but also a big design opportunity. Besides providing a glowing warm inside the home, it provides many renovation possibilities. Look at these ideas to bring attention to your fireplace in your interiors.

Accent the Fireplace Wall

If your fireplace is small, you can create a big impact with it by surrounding it with an accent wall. It will do the job of making the hearth as the focal point of the room. Mosaic or tiles can be used on the wall. Use backlit onyx if you want the fireplace wall to glow. You can also use textured tiles in a color that matches your walls.

A simple, small fireplace with gray accent wall.

[ad#co-1]

Renovate Brick Fireplace

A brick fireplace is very common and easy to reface. Painting is the most basic way to give a brick fireplace a new look. White is the most suitable color to use on brick fireplace but lighter shades like cream or pale yellow will be suitable too. You can also install board on top of the bricks and then add tiles of your choice. Marble tiles or slate tiles will give a sleek, contemporary look to the hearth.

Bring an Antique Look

In case if you are an admirer of country style, reface your fireplace with gray river rocks. These neutral-colored stones will not engulf a place and have an earth appeal to give your place a distinctive but old-fashioned look. Alternatively, an antique as well as sophisticated look can be brought by installing ceramic or porcelain tiles in it.

A fireplace with multicolored natural stones.

Image via: Flickr

Embellish Fireplace Surroundings

An ornate shelf brackets can give your fireplace an elegant look. Add the brackets just over the mantelpiece or to the wall around the fireplace. After installing the brackets, put the finishing touch by painting them in the same color as the fireplace frame. To enhance the beauty, you can also add fireplace screens, especially if you have a wood-burning hearth. Artistic screens made of wrought iron or stained glass are available that can increase the beauty of the whole room. Do not forget measuring the hearth opening before buying the screen.

Place a Pile of Wood

A pile of wood beside the fireplace can generate a cozy and warm feeling. Even if you have an electric or gas fireplace, consider placing a pile of chopped wood beside it. Either place metal pot filled with lumber or string pine cones on either side of the fireplace.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-41533 " title="Piles of wood beside fireplace.
Image via: Homedit

There is nothing like a fireplace to add a charming feel to your home. Makeover and accessorizing the mantel and fireplace can change the air of your house in an instant.

Guest Blogger #486, Entry #1122, April 24, 2012

You might not have the worst yard in the neighborhood, but if you have yet to add anything more than the sod and the single tree that came with the house then perhaps it’s high time you thought about doing a makeover. It’s not all about aesthetic appeal, either; by making your space more usable, turning it into an outdoor extension of your home, you can virtually increase your square footing and create a more desirable property (an especially advantageous strategy for anyone thinking of selling in the near future). So here are just a few tips for anyone looking to upgrade their outdoor space and make the most of every square foot of property.

Give your backyard a makeover!

Image via: Bhg

[ad#co-1]

Assess your backyard

A good place to start is by assessing what you’ve already got. If the lawn and the existing foundation (trees, shrubbery, etc.) are in good shape, if a little boring, then you probably don’t need to replace them; just give them a good trim (you might have to hire a service if you have tall trees, and you should probably do so once every year or two). Anything dead should be removed post haste (down to the roots) since it could pose a significant hazard in the case of a fire or storm, for example. And if there are dead spots on the law, either re-seed the area or simply get a few cuts of sod if you don’t want to wait for new growth.

Landscaping tips

Now that everything is ship shape it’s time to get down to the real work of landscaping, and the first order of business is to create a plan. You can find all kinds of templates and inspiration online, but all you really need to do is measure your yard so that you can draw a scale schematic. From there you can figure out where you want to place planters (or islands), decking, a patio, a water feature, pavers, or other items. This will help you to determine the best layout for your exterior space before you ever put shovel to soil.

Helpful tips to make your old yard look new!

Outdoor room and entertaining ideas

When it comes to what you will include in your outdoor room, you need to consider the intended usage as well as your environment. For example, you probably want to have barbeques or other types of gatherings. So you should think about creating an eating area complete with a paved patio or decking of some sort, a grilling area, and enough space for a table and chairs to accommodate your family and friends. You may also want to build out a covered structure of some kind. There are a couple of reasons why this is a good idea. For one thing, it will give you shade in the summer (sure you could sit under a tree, but then stuff will be falling in your food). However, if you live in a colder climate, a covered structure can also help to protect your lawn furniture from the elements (so you don’t have to bother stacking it in the garage all winter long).

As for plants, the real décor of your outdoor space, you best bet is to talk to a landscaper or simply visit an expert at your local nursery. These professionals can give you the 4-1-1 on everything from annuals and perennials, to drought-resistant species, to creating a floral diorama and layers of color in your space. And once you’ve got everything installed, you just need to look at the shears, sprinklers, and John Deere riding lawn mowers that will help you maintain your beautiful new backyard.

Happy DIY Saturday! It is the weekend and one of the top DIY projects is bathroom remodeling. Whether your bathroom is outdated with off color fixtures, or you want to upgrade to green plumbing fixtures, a weekend bathroom remodel could be on your list of things to do.

Guest Blogger – Half Bathroom Makeover in a Weekend

Want an updated look for your small half bath? A weekend of work can pay off with a transformed space, and you won’t spend an arm and a leg!

1. Design it!

The project bathroom had a builder-grade vanity and dingy vinyl sheet flooring. The sink was very small and difficult to use, and the faucet had recently failed. Since it was going to take just as much work to install a new faucet as it would to install a new sink, the homeowners decided to tackle the entire project. They selected a new pedestal sink and polished chrome faucet, both square to complement the new square light fixture. New paint was picked for the walls, and natural stone tile for the flooring.

Bathroom remodel ideas for your powder room

Image via: Decor Pad

2. Demolition!

All water lines were shut off to the toilet and the faucet, and then each was removed. Removal of a toilet can be made much easier with a large sponge and a bucket. After the water is turned off, flush the toilet a few times until the tank is mostly empty. Then, simply allow the dry sponge to soak up remaining water in the tank and bowl before squeezing it into the bucket. Repeat as necessary until the unit is mostly dry. Tip: it will not be completely dry and will leak when you move it, so rest it on a towel or on a boot tray once it is extracted from the bathroom. Also, be sure to work the toilet free by gripping the bowl, not the tank. Remove the wax seal from underneath the toilet, and also clean up the flange on the floor.

In this bathroom, the vanity had been glued to the walls and floor, and was removed with a small sledgehammer. The sheet vinyl flooring was cut at the door threshold and peeled up, revealing two additional layers of vinyl underneath. All earlier flooring was then removed to get down to the plywood subfloor. The door was measured to ensure it would freely open over the new tile flooring, and the door casing was trimmed with an oscillating multi-tool.

3. Paint!

Since the walls behind the former vanity had never been painted, but would be exposed and visible behind the new pedestal sink, the homeowner sanded and primed the blueboard so that it blended in smoothly with the remaining walls. Trim was painted white, and the walls primed and painted a shade of blue. Tip: have your primer tinted the same color as your finish paint.

Follow these steps for an easier weekend warrior project

Image via: The Perfect Bath

4. Floor!

The homeowners wanted a tile floor, and considered a few options. Large 12×12 inch tiles are inexpensive and look nice. 1-inch mosaic tiles are typically sold in 12×12 inch sheets with a mesh backing to help make installation easy, but are almost always substantially more expensive than the larger tiles. Since the flange and a few water lines passed up through the floor, several cutouts would be necessary in the tile flooring. The homeowners chose to install the more expensive natural stone mosaic tiles, as they’d be able to simply use scissors to remove individual 1-inch square tiles for the cutouts, rather than needing to rent a wet saw to cut the larger tiles. Additionally, the smaller tiles are much less likely to flex and crack underfoot, so they permit a somewhat less rigid subfloor.

The plywood subfloor was smooth and in good condition. EZMat underlayment was installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Then, the floor was tiled. Tip: read about the type of tile you are using to ensure that you seal it properly – some tiles require sealing prior to grouting, and then again after the grout has cured. Be sure to let the floor dry per the directions on the mastic and grout before moving forward. Finish the job by installing pre-painted quarter round or shoe molding around the perimeter and a transition threshold at the doorway.

5. Fixtures!

With the floor in and looking good, it was time to install the new sink. Pedestal sinks must be affixed to the wall, ideally directly into studs. Use a stud finder and make pilot holes in the locations where the sink bolts will go. Wall anchors can work if you’re unable to bolt the sink into studs. Just be sure the anchors are sufficiently strong to hold the heavy sink. Very large toggle bolts will do the job.

Install the plumbing components in the sink, test for leaks, the hang it on the wall, making sure that the drain lines up properly. Place the pedestal underneath the sink. Ideally, it will rest on the pedestal but be firmly affixed to the wall. The drain connections should be hidden behind the pedestal. Connect the water supply lines. Tip: when installing any new faucet, remove the aerator prior to running any water through the faucet. You’ll flush out any foreign material from the supply lines and from inside your new faucet instead of clogging the aerator.

Image via: The decorista

Use a new wax seal and install the toilet on the floor flange. While the tank is dry, it’s not a bad idea to swap out the old float mechanism for a new one, so do that too if the inspiration strikes. Connect the water supply, then turn it on and watch for leaks. Tip: place paper towels around the connection between the tank and the bowl, and around the base of the toilet for easy leak detection. Leaks can appear days later, so keep checking!

Following all precautions relating to working with electricity, replace the light fixture with a new, modern one. Add a toilet paper holder, towel ring and any other fixtures you desire to complete the transformation. Don’t forget to seal your tiles and grout after it has cured.

6. Enjoy!

If you’ve put a lot of time and money into carefully decorating your home, it can be a disappointment when you look up toward the rafters and are greeted by a boring, blank ceiling. Your walls and furniture are decorated to your exact specifications, so why leave all that white space up there? If you think there’s nothing you can do about short of attaching streamers to your ceiling fan, think again. Here are 4 ways you can can give your ceiling a makeover:

Creative ceiling ideas for your home

Light Fixture

The idea of attaching streamers to the ceiling fan was a joke, but there is a lot you can do to embellish lighting fixtures and take them from solely functional to a conversation piece. If you have a ceiling fan, you can paint the blades or buy new, decorative blades. If there’s no fan involved, your options abound. A simple Internet search will yield countless do-it-yourself chandelier projects and ways you can easily create an amazing light fixture to spice up a room.

Paint

If you have an inner Michelangelo, now is the time to summon those powers. But even if you aren’t ambitious enough to paint an intricate mural on your ceiling, you can still add a splash of color up there in a simpler way. Painting the ceiling one solid color is an excellent way to add color and depth to a room. If you paint it with a darker color, it can make the room feel cozier and more intimate. With a brighter color, it will feel like the walls are taller and make the room seem more spacious. To add a fun twist, try painting a pattern such as stripes or a checkerboard pattern.

Color on the ceiling can bring the drama!

Image via: Addicted 2 Decorating

Wallpaper

Just because the name includes the word “wall” doesn’t mean it can’t be adhered to the ceiling. If you want a fun design on your ceiling but lack the painting skills and patience to make it happen, wallpaper is an ideal shortcut. A patterned ceiling can look great with solid-colored walls, and wallpaper makes it easy to achieve. An alternative to wallpaper are wall decals, which you can position on the ceiling in any pattern you choose.

Crown Moulding & Coffering

While this option requires more of an investment than wallpaper or paint, the effect is dramatic and elegant. Options in this arena run the gamut from simple and sleek to embellished and ornate. Professional help will be required in this case — it takes an expert eye to assess what type of crown moulding works best for the room, depending on factors such as size and amount of moisture in the air. It might require saving up some money before making this investment, but the results are classy and well worth the price tag.

Ceilings can add dimension to any room
