I love wood! Sounds odd but being someone interested in the outdoors I have always been fascinated by the components of nature and wood in particular is an amazing material; the huge variety of colours, textures and the fact it comes from trees that have often lived for hundreds of years adds to the wonder of this incredibly durable, flexible material. In recent years we have had to become more conscious of our use of this wonderful substrate as we battle to ensure sustainability of our forests and green spaces. This has led to the increased use of alternative materials for the creation of furniture and interiors. I am passionate about creating art with function through my furniture and interior designs and although I have used metal, glass, granite and other materials that I will always return to the wonderfully versatile wood I first started working with.

I am a self-taught designer and initially I was inspired by picking up pieces of driftwood and figuring out how I could transform them into unique items for my home that I would love and that would represent my passions and interests. As my creative ideas grew influenced by an eclectic love of horror, nature and science fiction I started exploring the use of hardwoods, some of my favourites of which include Oak, Elm, Zebrano and Walnut.

The Arachnitab:

Its not difficult to guess where my inspiration came from when I created this table. I find spiders and insects so interesting and will outlive us all through their ability to adapt and survive. I love to make pieces which have a character of their own and this piece is made from English brown oak burr and with a zebrano wood centre for the table top, it’s got the natural edges left which have been sand blasted. The legs are lazer cut from mild steel then powder coated in textured matt black, I’ve had enquiries for titanium legs and also Gold plated which are all possible – the variations on this design are endless.

The Zebra Swiss jigsaw mirror:

Made from black walnut and American white oak developed from several eclectic sources of inspiration; the components fit together like a jigsaw the holes are reminiscent of Swiss cheese and the copper wire stitching is taken from one of the scariest horror characters of all time – Leather Face from the Texan Chainsaw Massacre! A mirror should provide the focal point of a room and should be as good to look at as well as to look into!

I created the Oak Swiss Jigsaw Ceiling Rose to match some wooden coving. Although it is made from a traditional wood it is contemporary in its look and design and I love the shadow created between the rose and the ceiling.

One of my favourite creations is the Arachnicab:

A cabinet standing on two legs, my idea of a cross between a spider and an Alien that is also very handy to store my jeans in! It’s made from European Oak that has been lightly scorched with a blow torch and the door has been double stitched down the centre with metal wire.

I have taken a traditional material and used it to create unique, modern designs which hopefully demonstrate to all the enduring beauty and versatility of wood.

Chaos is only chaos if we can see it and it gets in our way. Chaos in the home can be stacks of magazines, DVDs, clothes and other items that tend to accumulate over time. The first approach would be to de-clutter the house, which works well until you have run out of things to give away or throw out and still have a bunch of stuff lying around. Storage systems mounted on the wall are an excellent way of hiding the chaos. With flush panels that easily blend with the rest of the wall, and sometimes extending up to the ceiling, vertical wall storage systems are a great way to store things away while still maximizing space. Try these ways to bring natural light into your bathroom:

• Wash your windows more often because the dust the covers them prevents the natural light from coming in.
• To obtain visual privacy while admitting light, use frosted glass on your windows. It has the effect of rendering the glass translucent by scattering of light during transmission. It brings just enough natural light to warm up the space.
• Acquire light from adjoining spaces. Remove obstacles like interior walls so that one room can contribute to the lighting of other rooms. Increase transmittance through glass doors and windows. This technique will also allow your light to move from one room to another.
• Use mirrors to increase the sunlight in your bathroom. These reflect and bounce light around. Focus on where the light naturally strikes and place mirrors near those areas.
• Paint your bathroom walls in light colors. This will make the bathroom a lot larger and lights coming in are reflected.
• If you really want full access to the sky, add vaulted ceiling and/or a  skylight. It provides effective internal lighting, maximizes visual comfort and reduces energy use. A relaxing feeling to look up at the stars while enjoying a good steam.

All homes have bathrooms, but when it comes to interior design, they tend to get overlooked.  While it may not have the same prominence as the living room or kitchen, you still want your bathroom to look nice.

The easiest way to do this is to create a bathroom suite.

With the right design, a bathroom suite can rival anything you see in a hotel or spa.  When you go to take a bath, you will feel as if you are living in the lap of luxury.

Remove Extra Clutter

To get started with a bathroom suite, first you need to remove any extra clutter.  There are a number of storage solutions you can use to organize your bathroom space.  However, if you want to create the most attractive look, you need to get structures that have some pizzazz.   If you get really confused, consider installing more cabinetry.

As far as furniture and other adornments, this will depend on the size of your bathroom.  If your space is exceptionally large, you can decorate it with sculptures and vanity sets.  For your tubs and shower fixtures, consider getting something with curved edges.  The contrast makes your space look more elegant.  Just keep in mind you might have to do extra research to find a curved shower screen.

Flooring

With that in mind, I believe the bathrooms linear nature makes it easier to design.   I experiment with horizontal and vertical lines to create a better contrast within my space.  For the flooring, I create contrasts with Wenge runners.  This is a type of wood tiling.  For texture, I use three different materials to create contrast.  However, I never go over this number as I do not want to create a gaudy look.

Of course, if you would prefer all of your floor to be wood, that is fine too.  Just make sure you use some type of heating, as you do not want your feet to get cold.

Mirrors

Mirrors are something else you should think about when designing a bathroom suite.   Yet for myself, I prefer mirrors that are eye level.

Only use full length mirrors if you have no issues with seeing your whole body.

Lighting

Next, there is the issue of lighting.  Task lights work well, but make sure they are not near any of your mirrors.  If they are, they will create an unflattering shadow.   Vertical lights work well in preventing such problems, though they should not be your only lighting solution.  Around your bath, you should have atmospheric lights to help change the mood of your room.  When designing these lights, make sure you have at least three circuits to work with.  Two of these circuits will be for your main lighting, while the other one will be for your atmospheric lighting.  If you feel you need more circuits, you may have to hire an electrician to create them.  This will cost you some money, but unless you are an experienced electrician, you should not create circuits yourself.

Accessories

Lastly, you need to think about taps and towel racks.  To me, they are like jewelry; they give your bathroom suite those last finishing touches.   Though like anything else, they should match the overall design of your space.   For a better understanding, consider consulting with a bathroom specialist.

After you have done everything mentioned above, you can complete your design with chairs or stools.  If you are really elaborate, you can even consider putting a television in your bathroom.   But if you go this route, you would need to make sure you get a waterproof TV.  You would also need to install it in an area where there would be no worries of electrocution.

Making a dorm room look fantastic can be quite the challenge. Students are confronted by cold tile floors and dingy white or light grey walls, none of which is terribly exciting when it comes to design. Given the expense of school, having any money left over for decorating may seem impossible, but fear not. Being innovative – and knowing where to find online deals – will help pump some personality into a small living space. Here are some tips and tricks for making a plain space more palatable.

A hint of color

When it comes to restyling a small space, working with an expanse of white can make the room appear larger. Start with a piece of white furniture – for instance, a small bedside table. You can often find an affordable piece like this at a thrift store. If you find one in a different color, simply paint it white. Add in other white elements where possible – a few throw pillows covered in eyelet fabric, white desk accessories, or a white comforter with a light spray of flowers. By sticking to a monochromatic color scheme, the eye will stop only at points of contrast – that is, pops of color instilled around the room. Consider pairing that minimally-decorated duvet with pillows in a bright and complementary color. On the bedside table, try a small bowl with a wild design that picks up on another color in the room.

The power of reflection

Mirrors can also create depth in a room. If space allows, buy a large mirror (these also can usually be found at a thrift store) that calls upon the aforementioned colorful accents. A wall mirror with a white frame can blend against a white wall and be enhanced with a variety of photographs tucked in the frame. Save the room that thick photo albums would take up and enjoy a daily reminder of past good times.

Control the clutter

Every fall, stores seemingly explode with a wealth of decorations specific to dorm rooms. Keep purchases in line, however — clutter will make a room feel smaller. What starts out as a few innocent items can spiral out of control. Stick to small but decorative items that won’t overwhelm a space, like wall decals and a throw rug. Though it may be tempting, it is not necessary to buy everything in a design collection.

Keeping these tips in mind, designing a small space on a budget is extremely possible. A pop of color, a little illusion, and a few well-chosen accessories will liven up a formerly-dull living space – keep an eye out for good deals and get busy decorating!

We all may want a larger home but we can’t always afford everything that we want. Coloring:

Many people want to make a room stand out by adding bold colors but this is a bad choice. It can end up worsening the situation and make the room seem even smaller than it is. Use softer colors and save the bold tones for the accessories and decorations. Use light and neutral colors. This doesn’t mean it has to look boring. There are a lot of options to choose from. And remember, it’s not the color of the walls that makes the room pop, it’s the accessories and the bending of colors.

Mirroring Space:

Most every bathroom already has a mirror in it. Usually over the sink but if you add more mirrors to a room, it can really give the illusion of a larger space. You don’t want to blanket the walls with mirrors or anything but a few subtle touches can really make the room feel more open. This same trick will work for any room.

Only Keep Essentials:

One thing you need to do is cut down on the clutter. If you have a bunch of stuff it can really eat the space up. You can also downsize the sink. You might not want to throw everything out but if you’re dealing with storage issues then consider renting self-storage at a StorageMart to clear up some of the clutter. You don’t want to get rid of all of your decorative objects but sometimes less is more.

All of these tips can be used in any room of the house. Dealing with reduced living space can be really frustrating but it’s not something that you have to be content with. Often times we have too much junk or have furniture that just doesn’t fit a room. Taking a step back and taking a look at your home with fresh eyes can afford you the opportunity to make some great changes that will add to the quality of space in your small home.

While they’re already lots of interior design tips out there on the subject, I’m going to be focusing on one design element which in my opinion can make the biggest impact and that is wall mirrors. Mirrors do not only brighten up your living space but make the space feel a whole lot larger. The addition of an illuminated mirror or mirrors can be an amazing way to transfer your indoor environment from ordinary to extraordinary. While the aesthetic advantages of mirrors is easy to comprehend, the functional and emotional advantages are sometimes less easier to appreciate.

Regardless of the size you’re working with whether it’s a box room, grand palladium or your run-of-the-mill living room a mirror can do miracles to liven up your décor just like a piece of art.
