‘A Daughter’s Veteran’s Day Tribute’    Heather (Ashlee) Lee

Veteran’s Day Tribute

I am an Army Man’s Daughter.  I have led the Army life.  My mother was introduced to it when she became my father’s wife.

I was born a few years later and moved from place to place.  Sometimes I never knew when we were to move again or my new friend I just discovered had to move all over again.  Friends came and went through my life; it was hard to get really close.  I knew at any time there could be a post.  I was posted here and posted there and even overseas.  I learned that people spoke and lived different ways than me.

I had no idea why my life I had to go here and there, why couldn’t we stay in one place where friends and family were?

There were all these protocols that you had to figure out.  We had certain ways we must act and not tarnish the army name.

As I grew older I dated army men and there was always a saying “The army wife came from within.”  It was easier for an army man’s daughter to become an army man’s wife because she had already been through the ways of army life.

I left home later on and thought I got away from the Army way but it seemed to follow me every time I went home for a stay.

My father is now retired from the Army life but now he has become a Veteran and changed my thoughts on life.  Now I call him Poppy, for that distinction he has earned and he made me a small set of his metals which he had proudly earned.  I am so proud to be a Veteran’s Daughter I wish I could wear the metals every day and puff my chest out proud.  But I take them out on Remembrance Day each and every year and go and stand by Veterans with my metals I am proud to wear.

They fought for our country and fought for freedom and many lost comrades but still they stand there proudly chest puffed and metals dressed.

So when you see a Veteran, please remember this, they fought for us to be here and deserve the right of respect.

My name is Heather Lee but I go by Ashlee on Facebook. I am the daughter of a Canadian Army Veteran. I spent much of my life traveling with my family all over Canada and the North and South of Germany. I was very lucky to be able to travel so much and learn other languages. I lived a mile from the border of France and the family traveled there often. I think I have seen every castle in Europe. I now live on my own in Toronto, Ontario. I am a huge animal lover and I volunteer with the Annex Cat Rescue that helps feral cats. I also foster cats. ‘Preparing your Holiday Guest Room’    Adele Baumann Healey

The holidays are the time of year our guest rooms are put to good use, a comfortable, well thought out room is always appreciated. Where a person rests their head is so important, so let’s start with pillows.

Holiday Guest Room Ideas

Some people like soft pillows, others like firm, some prefer thick and then there are those who feel most comfortable on thin, so a range of pillows to choose from would be most appreciated. Not only are extra blankets a good idea, but how about a throw for those who like to take a little nap or just want to rest their eyes during the day? Beside the bed, be sure to have a carafe of water and a glass so your guests can have it handy during the night and not have to stumble to the bathroom to quench their thirst. Also, a box of tissues may be needed for those who suffer from allergies or are fighting a cold. Speaking of allergies, fresh flowers are always a special touch, but if you suspect they may be allergic to pollen, green plants or silk flowers will fit the bill.

Don’t forget to have taller lamps by the bed (or wall sconce’s) so people will be able to read before sleeping if they care to. At the foot of the bed, or somewhere in the room, be sure to have a luggage rack or bench where luggage can be placed. Many do not like to have their suitcase on the floor, plus it is much easier to get into when placed higher.

Warm up their holiday guest room with amenities

Consider using window coverings that block out any night time light. Many people have a difficult time sleeping if the room is not completely dark. Use drapes, shades or blinds that can be opened during the day so your guests enjoy a nice, sunlit room, and then closed at night for a sleep inducing environment.

On the dresser, place a pretty tray, not only does it look special, it provides guests somewhere to place their jewellery, watches, wallets or other small items and the owners will know exactly where they placed them. A small sewing kit may be the perfect answer for a loose button or a torn hem. Just place needles, threads, double sided tape and small scissors in a pretty box or even a canning jar, and it’s ready to be used.

Create storage area for your guests

Be sure to have emptied out a few drawers so company has the option to place their clothing out of site. Let’s not forget that closet! Make sure it is tidy and fresh smelling, make plenty of empty space available for those who like to hang their clothes. Offer your guests the use of nice plastic or felt covered hangers, so things hang neatly and do not slide to the floor. Having a soft, fluffy robe waiting for them in the closet is a great way to say “Welcome”!. If you do not have a dresser or chest of drawers, place baskets or bins in a bookshelf.

If you are using a study as a guest room, don’t forget those amazing Murphy beds. By having them closed during the year, there will be more room in the office or study, but upon lowering, you will always have a private place available for those who visit.  Try not to have too many accessories on table and dresser tops. A few special accent pieces will create a beautiful space while not overpowering the room.

If you just have a tiny room for company, remember – a comfy bed is most appreciated. You can always place a straight backed wooden chair next to the bed where people can place items they want near them, and a wall sconce will give a good source of light without needing a table. Plan ahead and then step back and enjoy your visitors (and hopefully everyone will sleep well).

‘Preparing your Kitchen for the Holidays’    Shelley Harcar

The holidays are fast approaching. If  like me, your kitchen will be a particularly busy place from November through to January. In order to thrive, not just to survive during this festive time, preparation is a must.

Start by thinking about your role in the upcoming holidays. Are you entertaining flocks of family & friends; or are you hosting a smaller, informal gathering?  Take stock of what will be required of you and then plan a menu accordingly. Now is the time to double check recipes to ensure you have all the ingredients and to compose a shopping list. It is also a good time to sift through new recipes and see if you would like to add something different to this year’s feast.

Modern Holiday Kitchen Ideas

In my first Olioboard is for a sleek, modern kitchen which is not necessarily compatible with turkeys and pilgrims. While touches of autumn can still be found, they are more minimal. Twig decals add interest to the wall, while a mosaic done in autumn colors brightens the breakfast bar. Modern canisters embellished with gold toned leaves are beautiful and functional. The table centerpiece gets pops of color from gerbera daisies arranged in a vase with twigs and leaves.

Shop for your essentials as early as you can to save time later.  The closer you are to the big day, the longer the grocery store checkout lines will be.  Restock your spices and herbs; be sure you have plenty of fresh ingredients for your culinary masterpieces. Read over your recipes and see what can be done in advance. I dice, sauté, & freeze celery and onions for my turkey dressing in early November as well as cubing & freezing my bread for the same recipe. This saves work in the hours prior to Thanksgiving. Many recipes have steps you can do ahead.

Preparing your kitchen for the holidays

Decorating for holidays is near and dear to my heart. A nicely appointed kitchen can add an extra bit of holiday cheer, especially if you are the one up to your elbows in dishwater. At least you can enjoy your surroundings! Start with a nice clean kitchen. Replace any worn or unsightly kitchen linens and do the heavy cleaning: oven, refrigerator shelves, behind the fridge, windows, walls and floors all these can be done now and touched up on an as needed basis.

Traditional Thanksgiving Kitchen

In my second Olioboard I have shown examples of decorations that don’t disrupt the kitchen and I chose a traditional Thanksgiving theme. Outlining the cupboards with silk fall leaves is quick, easy, and inexpensive and adds an immediate touch of autumn’s brightness. A large fall wreath, Indian corn, and a banner decorate the windows. A basket of colorful gourds and a charming fall sculpture flank either side of the kitchen but don’t require much space. I love using seasonal items that are functional. The turkey platters, tea pot, salt and pepper shakers, timer, dinnerware and clock all have a useful purpose and add the ambiance of the season.

With all the activity in the kitchen, you will want to keep your decorative items somewhat minimal. Very few of my 50 plus turkeys make it into my kitchen, simply because of the space they would require. Also think of the safety of guests when choosing kitchen decorations. Low hanging garlands, candles, and extension cords all have the potential for causing injuries.

Most importantly,enjoy yourself as much as possible while planning and prepping your holiday kitchen. Include spouses and children or grandchildren in the preparation if possible.

I hope I have inspired you to begin preparing your kitchen for the holidays.  As we all know, they will be here sooner than we think.

‘Kitchen Creativity: Cooking with Kids’    Lisa Ketz

Kids of all ages benefit from cooking activities, it teaches them about  measurements and encourages them to explore their senses by trying new foods. Cooking is a beneficial skill, teaching about different types of ingredients and healthy eating. By educating children about cooking and introducing them to fun and tasty recipes, they will make better eating decisions and take pride in cooking their own food. It also introduces them to the process of cooking and how things change from one thing into another through cooking or baking. Picky eaters are also more eager to try  foods they’ve cooked themselves.

Ensure your kitchen is equipped with kid-friendly supplies

Kids love to help in the kitchen if given the chance.  It can be a really fun way to spend quality time with your little ones.  But before you begin cooking  take the time to educate them about the  ingredients, tools  and utensils that they will be using. Teach kids to gather all the materials for the recipe before they begin. Clear the kitchen space and make sure everything is clean. Sharing your knowledge about these things before you begin will provide them with a good foundation to begin cooking.

To keep it fun and safe, however, some things need to be considered,as there are many hazards in a kitchen close supervision is a necessity.  You will want to teach your child the importance of cleanliness especially when handling food.  Now is the time to show them that nutritious foods can be fun and yummy.  Colorful fruits and vegetables have great appeal.  Keep recipes simple.  There are a number of great cookbooks available specifically geared towards children.

Let kids have creative control in the kitchen

Let your child pick what they want to make, and if you can shop for the ingredients with them, all the better.  The more ownership of the process your child can claim the prouder of the end result they will be.It is best not to wear baggy clothing when cooking in the kitchen especially if the stove or oven is to be used.  Make sure your child is securely and comfortably situated before they begin.  A large flat workspace is preferable.  Have tools available that have no sharp edges for the little ones and teach older children how to handle them safely.  Make sure your work area is well lit.  Clean up as you go.

Finally, enjoy the best part.  Eating what you have created together.

‘Lighting your Outdoor Parties this Autumn’    Sam Holloway

For most people, Autumn is a time to reap in the  harvests and to preserve food for the upcoming colder months of Winter. The best way to celebrate a good harvest is to enjoy the fruits of your labour by throwing a party to share them with friends and family.

There is no need to stress over complicated recipes and decorations.  keep it subtle and simple and let the food speak for itself. Lighting sets the mood for any party, it is the key to ensure that your party can continue throughout the darker evenings that Autumn brings. . Think of the lighting as part of the party decorations when deciding what to use. Incorporate more than one type of light at your party for maximum effect, as one of the easiest and least expensive ways to add ambiance to an outdoor space is with lighting– the right lighting certainly does make an impact and cast a memorable glow.

Lighting ideas for your Outdoor Parties this Autumn

Make sure you have enough lighting so your guests are not struggling to see their food and drink even when it gets dark. this doesn’t mean lighting up your garden like an airport runway.

Atmospheric lighting  will help improve the general tone and feel to your party. Flares, lanterns and even your Christmas fairy lights along your pathway are great to ensure nobody ends up taking a swim in your fish pond. One good idea that I have used before is tea lights to mark out the garden path and steps, also in trees and bushes to add that ‘wow factor’.

There are so many different types of outdoor lighting available on the market nowadays and each type  contributes a different ambience.

Solar Lights:

These gather energy during the day from the sun  and automatically turn on as darkness falls. They can be left outside all year round and last about six hours at a time, so it’s possible that they will start to fade before your guests do so make sure you also have other types of lighting in use to ensure the party continues.

Electric Lights:

Use an outdoor lamp to brighten up a buffet, or wrap twinkling strands around columns or trees. To hide cords, duct-tape them to the ground and cover with an outdoor rug, or tuck them under bushy garden plants. Electric string lights can withstand the rain so can stay outside for up to three months; store them indoors for the winter and check for frayed wires before bringing them out next season. Strings of white or coloured holiday lights are a festive addition to your outdoor lighting year round. String them onto existing walls, fences and outdoor structures for instant lighting. Create a tent effect with several strings and a central pole. Place a pole that is at least 8 feet high in the centre of the party area. Run strings of lights from the top of the pole to the top of a fence or wall. String the lights so they radiate out from the pole to wall. If you don’t have a fence, place 6-foot stakes around the perimeter of the party area every 4 feet or so.

Battery Powered Lights:

These give you  the ambience of candles without worrying about gusts of wind extinguishing them or dripping wax which also make them ideal for parties where children and pets are present. Create lighting over seating areas by  placing a battery-operated light inside lanterns. Make sure to bring the lights inside at the end of the party: Batteries can leak and short if they get wet.

Paper Lanterns:

A variety of shapes, sizes and colours are available. Choose round accordion-style lanterns for bold lighting or narrow cylindrical lanterns for a more refined look.  Tie streamers to the bottom of the lanterns or leave them plain depending on the mood you want to set.

• Suspend paper lanterns above the party. And attach them to existing outdoor bulbs or attach them to string lights. Lanterns are especially striking when surrounding a pool because the light reflects off the water.

Candles and Torches:

Candlelight emits a warm, gorgeous glow with one strike of a match. Define borders by placing small candles in glass holders along flower borders, walls and paths. When hanging candles from trees, place them in deep containers so that the wicks are a minimum of fat least a few inches lower than the rims; this will prevent the flames from blowing out, also ensure that handles of the containers are made of wire and  long enough to keep flames about 12 inches away from leaves and branches.

With the right mix of lighting you can ensure that your garden will remain well lit until your last guest leaves. Now all you have to do is relax in the company of your friends and share your delicious home cooked feast.

‘Creative Small Apartment Decor Ideas’

In a small apartment it is necessary to evenly distribute the space.

The colors for the walls and the floor must be clearly divided and equal throughout the apartment,keep to the lighter colours as dark colours will make your apartment look even smaller .

The use of mirrors helps to give the illusion of space, especially useful in small apartments.  Place mirrors on a wall opposite of a window wall and see how the view is multiplied times ten throughout the rest of the space

Small apartment decor ideas

Instead of the hassle of trying to fit in all your pieces of furniture together in a small space opt for convertible furniture. Convertible furniture is furniture that can serve for two or three purposes simply by moving around several parts. These pieces of furniture can be extremely convenient for a small space as they fill several functions, thus enabling you to get rid of unnecessary furniture and save space in your apartment

Divide the room into zones according to their function : dining kitchen and bedroom / living room. There are many great pieces of furniture available for just this purpose,bookcases, curtains and dividers can create distinct areas, as can different types of lighting — spotlights over your cooking area, for example, and lamps around the seating area. Besides making these areas more functional, such separations actually make your apartment look larger.

Creative tricks for your small apartment

The two areas in my project, a small apartment of 35 square meters in a town house, are separated only by a rug to give the illusion of a larger space . The sofa-bed  is near the only window and on the longest wall beside the sofa is a closet with sliding mirrored doors which reflects the light from the window and gives the impression of a greater breadth to the room. In front of the sofa is a small table / bench which is easily moved for the opening of the bed. The continuity between the living / kitchen area is achieved  by keeping the floor and the walls similar throughout.

The kitchen/dining area is a fitted out with a black and white kitchen  with plenty of vertical storage so as not to waste an inch of space and full height cupboards, use these for the kitchen towels and all your kitchen utensils. The extend-able glass topped dining table does not visually interrupt the area and the chairs are stackable. To illuminate the table a chandelier is used to give a glittering and romantic  aura.

The personal touch is added by the use of color through accessories, the white linen sofa bed made from a coarse textured fabric is dressed with soft cushions that mirror the color of the exquisite cabinet beside it. The raw silk curtains and another texture to the space and are kept to a neutral color. The c lamp with a gray shade and lavender base compliments the glass droplets of the chandelier above the dining table , giving the room a feeling of freshness and elegance. Even the kitchen accessories such as bowls, glasses and vases are lavender shades and add a further note of transparency and freshness.  The free wall behind the sofa is painted lavender to make it the focal point amongst the other walls which are white, a white frame is painted on the feature wall in which my modern graphic is hung thus adding interest and more color.

‘Dramatic Autumn Bedroom Ideas’

“Baby, when it’s cold outside” you probably want to stay indoors!

It’s that time of year when you are looking for ways to make your house warmer and ready for the winter months, especially in your bedroom.

I’m like a cat, I love being curled up in a warm blanket away from the colder and wetter weather that autumn brings.

The bedroom is a place for relaxation after a long stressful day, so you want it to be comfortable. What ways can you make your bedroom warmer?

Create decorative layers in your bedroom

First of all let’s start with the bed itself and consider layering.

Start buy investing in a good set of sheets,Flannel sheets are really good at keeping your feet warm and they have a soft texture.

Another option to consider is the thread count of your bed linen.

If you plan to spend money on buying a nice set of sheets, think about a higher thread count, The higher the thread count, the more comforting the sheets will be.

On top of the sheets, you will need a very soft blanket or a down alternative.

Next of course is the main star, the comforter or duvet.If you want extra coverage a quilt or another blanket folded on top will work just as well. Also remember to stock up on blankets because you will need them!

Enveloping your bed in comfort

Don’t forget the pillows! Your neck can get stiff during the colder months so you will need lots of pillows, at least two of course, or four or more. Is it time you invested in some new ones? Depending on the materials used a pillow can last for as little as 6 months with some lasting up to 8 years. Here is how to find out, If it’s a feather or down pillow place it on a table, fold it in half and squeeze out the air. Let the pillow go and if it unfolds itself back to its original shape then it means the filling still has enough support in it. If it doesn’t spring back then it’s lost its support and needs replacing.

If it’s a synthetic pillow (polyester, hollowfibre, microfibre) then place it on a table, fold it in half and place a small weight on it, around 300g (e.g. a decent paperback). If the pillow springs back to shape whilst flinging off the weight then it still has enough support, if not, chuck it and buy a new one.

Lighting your bedroom

Lighting is also important to keep a cold room bright and full of energy, it also plays a part in romance. Your room may feel dark during the cold months and this is where good lighting comes in to play.

Surround your bed with candles, you can also use scented ones that not only give off a soft glow but they also fill the room with a warm aroma bringing romance into the room . Romance is great during the winter months, it can really boost your mood and body temperature!

In the winter time you are probably thinking about closing your curtains or adding them, especially in your bedroom to keep the cold air from circulating. To keep the warmth from escaping an option that some people use is to seal your windows with plastic although there are other Eco-friendly options out there that are great to try.

When you wake up in the cold months, sometimes the floor can be so cold, it’s unbearable. Health wise your feet are the first things that should be taken care of,especially during this time. So keep your tootsies warm, by placing a rug underneath your bed and keep your slippers and robe within easy reach.

‘Decorating with Natural Fall Elements ’ –  Xiomara Zayas

Who doesn’t fall in love with the autumn when it begins to show its spectacular natural beauty and its countless elements. It’s autumnal fragrances, amazing trees, lovely leaves in various colors and hues all abounded around us; dream and imagine part of that splendiferous nature in your living space.

If you are a lover of nature, immerse yourself in the inspiration that autumn brings. Express your creativity and bring in some natural autumnal touches to your space with those elements that reflect your personality.

Bringing Nature into your Interiors this Fall

Look around your home, you may already have some of these elements on which you can enhance. Wooden furniture,ceilings or wood floors can be  accentuated with other autumnal ornaments and make the most of them. You can leave the windows undressed in specific areas so as to allow the natural  light to flood the room and to have a clear view of the forever changing colours of autumn.

Collect branches!!!, they are fabulous. There are a thousand ways to incorporate these into your décor on the walls and in table arrangements. A large branch adorned with leaves and spices hanging from the ceiling with candles makes a great centrepiece. The best thing about branches is that they are excellent for any season of the year and their leaves are incredibly decorative especially by their rich colors.  You can create unique ornaments using pine cones, dried flowers and gourds in assorted colors which provide a mix of textures and don’t forget to include some elements of forest deer and birds to your displays.

Enlightening Senses in your Home

The fruits harvested of this season and spices such as cinnamon, cloves and anise are a tremendous option for the autumn décor. In addition to their warmth and color, they retain their fragrance which fills  your home with a rich spicy aroma.  Speaking of aromas remember to add scented candles, they offer you one of the warmest and inviting natural elements; Fire.

Decorating with natural fall elements is so simple; just let the autumn inspire you and allow your creativity to flow. Surround yourself with the warmth and harmony that autumn offers you and enjoy it to the maximum. Happy Autumn days!!!

‘Planning & Designing the Perfect Baby Nursery’ –  Alison Hayes

Planning a nursery for your bundle of joy is an exciting wonderful experience, but it can also be overwhelming if you don’t know where to begin.  Here are some helpful tips to assist you in designing that perfect baby room.

Choose a specific theme or style. Selecting a concept or specific idea will help you narrow your focus and create a more cohesive design. This will also save you time and energy making your shopping selections easier.

Choosing a focal point

Decide what your focal point will be. Most nurseries focus on the crib as the center of attention, but there are other options to choose from like a large bay window or a family heirloom, such as an antique rocking horse or painted dresser that draws your focus.

Choose furniture that will grow with your baby. When selecting nursery furniture, think about the long term. Choose cribs that can convert to a toddler’s bed. Instead of a baby dresser, purchase a regular functional dresser that will look stylish in a nursery as well as a kid’s room. For versatile storage buy a bookcase, in the infant years it serves as a convenient place to organize baby items and will transition nicely throughout your child’s growing years. Thinking ahead will ensure you get the most out your money and your space.

Choosing the right decor elements

Choose a textile before paint color. It can be disappointing to finally find the perfect curtains and baby bedding that you are excited about, but later find out that it clashes with your painted walls. Keep in mind that there are numerous paint colors to choose from, plus you have the option of color matching any object; it is definitely easier to choose your textiles first then buy paint to match it.

Use different levels of lighting.  Install a dimmer for intense overhead lighting. Implement stylish ceiling lights such as chandelier with lampshade coverings. It is also a good idea to have a small accent lamp for a cozy restful ambience, and don’t forget the nightlight for safety and comfort especially during those late night feedings.

Don’t wait until the last minute. Get your nursery underway early, so there will be plenty of time to air our out freshly painted spaces and new furniture smells. Getting a head start with a good design plan will reduce stress and ensure that you will have enough energy to finish the job.

‘Festive Fall Outdoor Entertaining Ideas ’ –  Adele Baumann Healey

Entertaining in the fall can be an exciting and exhilarating experience which your guests, no matter what age, can enjoy.  There are a few things to remember to make the get together a success. The fall weather can be challenging in respect to the greater degree of temperature changes between the sunny, warm afternoons and the chilly evenings.  Because of this, always have throws, blankets and extra jackets or sweaters available for your guests.

Fall outdoor entertaining ideas

Since the dark hours of night arrive sooner, also be sure to have plenty of lanterns, candles, hanging lights and fresh light bulbs available so there are no painful trips or groping in the dark. Hanging lights from trees or overhangs can create a magical experience for young and old alike.   Not only are these ideas a safety measure, but we all know that filtered and/or candle light makes us all look good! Also, borrow, beg or steal (well, don’t really steal – but renting is a good idea) small fire pits, chimineas or portable outdoor heaters to keep family and friends toasty warm as the night hours progress.  And after using that wheel barrow to haul those items to their location, fill those wheel barrows with potted chrysanthemums.

You can also spread the potted plants out along your patio or place them in a colorful, show stopping combination.  What’s great about using mums as decoration is, by the fall, they are usually on sale and after the party you can plant them in your garden to enjoy the next year!

Landscaping ideas for fall entertaining

Don’t forget your yard.  If you want an unforgettable experience, and have the time, bundle up dried corn stalks and possibly make a scarecrow with your kids (this will help them feel they contributed to creating a party spirit), and create a complete fall ambience.  And speaking of contribution, ask your guests to create or share their fall wreaths so you can hang them in the party area and allow others to admire their handy work and good taste.  Write messages on pumpkins and gourds.  Pile them in a basket or wooden box to place on a table as a center piece.  Not only is this an attractive centerpiece, but it can also inspire giggles or sentimentality depending on what messages you write. Along with the beer, wine, and soda pop, consider making a warm mulled wine for the adults and a warmed apple cider for the children.  Not only are these options tasty, but they offer something warm for cold fingers to wrap around. And last, but not least, be sure to have your firewood ready for those fire pits and chimineas.  Nothing worse than watching that last log burn down to ash when there’s still a good hour left to the party.
