If a fancy mosaic of pavers isn’t in the cards due to the cost of materials and labor, then consider colored concrete as a viable option. Whether you want to spice up your current patio by having a pro come out and stain it for you or you’d like to create a unique pressed mosaic by laying your own concrete slab, embossing it with a mold while wet, and then hand-staining it yourself, this is a less expensive way to get the custom look you crave and add some visual interest to an otherwise bland backyard.

Planting is a great way to add color and variety to your yard, but limiting yourself to beds and garden planters around the perimeter of your house and fence line can be a bit passé. Instead, draw a scale model of your yard and experiment with the placement of islands. Once you’ve found a configuration you like, tear out the sod, add a mound of dirt, tamp it down, and then plant. You can add trees, shrubbery, and a variety of flowering plants that will bloom in different seasons. And all you have to do is add cypress wood mulch or wood chips for a finishing touch that will keep the plants in place and help the soil to hold moisture until the ground cover fills in.

Building a covered deck or installing a motorized awning simply might not be in your budget. But if you want some less expensive cover that will also add beauty to your yard, a pergola or arbor may be an ideal solution. They’re not terribly difficult to build (although you can find some low-cost prefab options) and you can train a variety of vines to grow up and over the slats in order to create a leafy, shade-giving roof in the summer.

Brown, patchy lawns are uninviting and off-putting. Weeds create a miniature backyard jungle harboring unwanted pests and rodents. Nobody likes a dead lawn or one that is infested with crabgrass. Basic, fundamental lawn care practices can help bring life back to your backyard without breaking the bank on expensive fertilizer programs. For example, is the right type of grass planted in your backyard? The backyard is usually where all of the gathering takes place and definitely where the family dog spends most of his or her time. So, homeowners are going to want to have a traffic resistant grass type in their backyard. To save money you can use seed instead of uprooting the entire lawn and replace it with sod. Because Bermuda grass (though a beautiful lawn choice) is also one of the world’s most pesky weeds it can easily overtake a lawn by spreading enough seed. Of course, other things come into play like mowing once a week and watering deeply and infrequently. However, switching your type of grass can be easy to way to boost your backyard aesthetic.

Hanging Lanterns and Outdoor Lighting

Installing lighting fixtures and outdoor lighting. throughout your outdoor space can be incredibly pricy, but luckily there are less expensive ways to implement the illumination needed to keep your afternoon soirees going late into the evening. You can purchase colorful paper lanterns at import markets or even dollar stores, in some cases. And hanging them is a cinch. You can either place poles strategically throughout the yard and run light strings between them (hang the lanterns on after) or you might dangle individual bulbs from tree branches. You could even hang lights from the edges of your pergola! From there it’s easy enough to hide the main power cable under the turf as it runs back to the outlet on the side of your house.

DIY water features for your Backyard Transformation

Adding custom logo water features to your yard won’t help you to save money, but you can still get the serenity of a garden water feature by implementing your own aquatic installation. There are all kinds of tutorials online that will help you to create a water wall, koi pond, or drip system, just for example, and many require just a few basic items from the hardware store and a little creativity on your part when it comes to adding a touch of beauty.

If your outdoor furniture can be painted, paint it! Earth hues might look good in the living room, but they shrink and merge into the surroundings outdoors. When choosing a paint color, avoid black as it makes furniture very hot when exposed to direct sunlight. Choose bold, bright colors that recall summer. To add interest, remove the faded cushions on the seats and add comfy, colorful ones. Choose cushions in vibrant colors (like fuchsia, tangerine), and contemporary prints like stripes, ikat, and striking florals.

How do you perk up your outdoor living space in summer?

I have one of those outdoor patio areas that you close your eyes as you walk into it because it has always been dark and gloomy. The circa 1987 brick home that we love has had its share of remodeling projects, but the front porch was always been way down the list in priorities!

I was excited to pair with Pier 1 Imports and show you their outdoor patio furniture and decor that can bring any patio out of the ’80s and into modern day. I chose a “garden theme” for my front patio. With plenty of fresh green, yellow, and browns to bring nature and a sense of organic living to my front entryway.

Choosing my garden themed decor at Pier 1 Imports

For any of you that have ever walked into a Pier 1 Imports, you know that the experience is like walking into your favorite home decor magazine. You literally wish you had 10 patios to makeover just to try out all of the different decorative themes!

My garden theme helped me keep my focus in the store, ha! Florals, nature, rustic textures and weathered patinas that looked like they’ve been garden decor for years… that was my vision. I picked up a catalog and was surprised that I could order anything online and it could be delivered to my door… yep, that was a winner!

I started off with the seating first and fell in love with these Casbah Chairs in Mocha and paired them with Angelique Seat Cushions and a Cassius Accent Pillow for its playful patterns. The synthetic rattan material makes them weather resistant, and they can be stacked and tucked out of the way for entertaining when needed.

I then chose the Antiqued White Pedestal and Hammered Flower Table for guests to put their drinks and plates on. The Oval Plant Stand was great to add height to my patio setting and the bottom shelf can double as an area for guests to put their refreshments.

I found two items that instead of using them for their traditional use, I decided to use them in non-traditional ways: A large Nailhead Lantern and Oversized Outdoor Tray I filled with fresh greenery and lemons to bring color and natural textures to my patio area. I finished the area off by hanging black & brown wind chimes for a Zen appeal to my outdoor space.

Pulling all of the elements together

To soften up the concrete on my porch, I used potted green plants and hanging air vases to make the patio feel like it was teleported from a rainforest. Then I created a seating area that was conversational and inviting.

The garden theme was a natural tie-in with my outdoor patio and the Pier 1 Imports decor and furnishings made the area come alive! I can’t wait until next week when I show you creative ideas to throw a garden brunch in this space.

Sprucing Up your Fall Curb Appeal this Season

Just because it’s the Fall season doesn’t mean that the planters and gardens have to go. In fact there are certain plants that bloom during the winter season, such as poinsettias. These are great holiday plants that you can place around the mailbox or along the walkway. Plus there are some great planters that you can put in plant boxes near the windows.

Replace Worn and Used

Survey the outdoors of your home and see what needs some TLC. For instance; check the gutters, wall-mounted mailboxes, down-spots, and walkways to make sure that there in good upkeep. If they are looking a little rusty and worn down then chances are you should replace them or clean them up. For the gutters, you can go with vinyl which are easy to maintain and no painting or a more classic look with the copper but it’s more costly and more to maintain.

Repaint the Outdated

A quick and simple way to add some gusto to your curb is with an old trick, painting. A fresh coat of paint to the doors, shutters, trim of the windows and front wall of the house can create a totally different tone and look to the home. Say your home may not have trim or shutters you can easily install some to the exteriors of your home. The shutters can help to control the lighting and ventilation control within your home. This is a maintenance tip that you can updated every few months and keep your home looking healthy.

Light the Outdoors

Like with pretty much anything to do with interiors, the lighting can either make or break a space and the same can be said for the outdoors. Landscape lighting is another way to enhance your outdoor appeal. You can have accent lighting along the walkway, two pendant lights on the doors, or get creative sense it’s getting close to the holidays time for holiday lights around the house or just on the trees and the mailbox.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make the major differences and your curb appeal is no exception to that rule.  It may not be anything more than simple repairs or cute adornments that invite the holiday season, but they help to make your home more warm and personal.  Again, it’s the first and last impression others see from your home, so let’s make it a great lasting impression.  And Stagetecture readers, can you think of any ways that you might like to put some kick into your curb appeal? Spice Up what’s Already There

Basically, when you are trying to freshen up the exteriors of your home you want to first begin with sprucing up what you already have. Start off cleaning the exterior walls with a pressure washer and perhaps using a fresh coat of paint to help accentuate them. Have the color palette match with the season in which you are re-doing your exterior look. Also replace or fix any accents in the front such as house numbers, porch amenities or even the front door.

Adding value to your outdoor home really doesn’t take that much effort. Sometimes it can be just a simple cleaning and removing of unwanted items or it can be as extensive as adding in a luxury pool. Make sure that when you feel that everything is in place to step out into the streets and take a look back at your home to see what others will see. Choose the way

It is important to have an idea in mind on how the path will evolve around the garden. Sometimes, the garden itself commands the direction of the path, but other times you will have to plan the way carefully, in order to achieve the highest amount of usefulness for the path. Think about what you want to show to a visitor or see at your daily stroll around the garden, and what facilities you have for which a pathway is important. Also, consider if you need a wide enough pathway in order for two people to walk side-by-side or a narrow path is sufficient for your needs. Don’t forget to plan soft curves into your route to make the path interesting.

Go for the suitable material

There are a lot of possibilities on what material to use when making a path. Cost is of course a thing to consider when making the final decision. Also it is important to choose by easiness of building the path in terms of whether or not a professional will be necessary to build it.

Some great pathway materials are flagstones. They can be found in a countless variety of sizes and shapes, so it is easy to find the right one for your needs. Another advantage of those big stones is that greenery, like grass or moss can peak through the gaps, which can add to the appeal of the pathway. Pebbles are also a great material to fill the gaps. Choose some soft perennials to complete the look.

Gravel is also a great way to go, just make sure to have borders that will keep the gravels in place. Those borders can be made out of bigger stones, bricks, wooden logs or even low hedges.

Wood is a beautiful pathway material, although it needs much more work, preparation and treatment in order to make it able to keep for longer. Also, keep in mind that it can get slippery, especially in a more humid environment.

Perennials are wonderful for marking a Path. They can act like a natural boundary to show the way. You can choose between low or high growing perennials that can be flowering or just stay green. To make the path a stimulating experience for all senses, add some aromatic plants and some with vibrant colors. Perennials have the strength to make even a plain path look exceptional.

Olioboard Inspiration: Preparing your Spring Porch for Enjoyment –  Adele Baumann Healey

Now is the time of year to start thinking about preparing your porch for future pleasant days and evenings.  Thank goodness!  Not only is it important to plan your porch so it looks inviting and comfortable, but it can really boost the curb appeal of your home.

Get your front porch ready for spring

First, time to cut down and trim those bedraggled looking plants, and you might consider making a plan to add color to the front of your home by planting flowers, or adding bushes with different leaf colors.  Remember to somehow tie the landscape of you yard to the hardscape of your front porch – whether it be with color, style or a certain “personality”.   Does your porch need to be painted or stained?  Now is the time to do it BEFORE moving the furniture and potted plants to their designated spots.

Front door and lighting ideas

Consider splurging on a special front door, or for less cost, paint your door a color that will draw the eye to the front of the home and guide your guests to the entry.  Also, keep the path easy to maneuver by removing or trimming any overgrown bushes or plants.

Lighting is an important consideration for night time guests.  Whether it be lights along the sidewalk or a bright front door light, help them find their way easily and safely.

A small front porch can still offer opportunity to show your home’s personality by adding a small chair or table, a bright rug, some hanging plants, or my favorite – Morning Glories growing along the roof of the porch.  So easy and so striking!  Also, find a little special spot to share your love of art by highlighting your favorite outdoor piece.

And don’t forget to make sure your house numbers are easy to spot.  There are so many styles of numbers to choose from that it should be easy to find some that will compliment your home.

Create an inviting outdoor living area

If you have a large side or back porch, use that opportunity to create an outdoor living area for three of the four seasons.  Comfortable seating, tables, rugs, plenty of lighting and possibly even an outdoor fireplace or heater will give ample opportunity to use that often overlooked space.  Have fun designing an area where your friends and neighbors will want to join you and spend relaxing time with you.  Show your own personality through quirky or special touches.

Always consider the size of the area and the ability people will have to maneuver the space of the porch.  So, although you don’t want to crowd the area, an empty porch can make the home feel much less inviting or welcoming.

Time to pull out those photos of your dream porch and making it a reality, and before you know it, the weather will cooperate and it will be time to enjoy that dream.
