Thanksgiving DIY: How to Make Beautiful Burlap Placemats

Burlap Placemat Directions:

1. Cut one 15″ tall x 21″ long rectangle or use an existing placemat as your guide (you can use pins to mark the edges). To achieve a straight cut, you can proceed like this: make a small snip at one end of your burlap, where you placed a pin, find a loose, vertical burlap thread and pull it out all the way. The fabric will create wrinkles, but that is fine. As soon as all the thread is pulled out, straighten out the burlap. Now you should be able to see a nice, fine straight line where the thread used to be. This line will be your cutting guide. Repeat the same steps for the other three sides of your placemat, and you will have created a perfect burlap rectangle.
2. If you want to create a fringe, remove a few threads on every side until the placemats have the look you want. If you want to make the placemats more lasting, you can stitch a seam around the borders before creating the fringe. Use the scissors to correct any loose threats.
3. You can iron at this point the placemats smooth.
4. Place your stencil over the placemat and paint the shapes with acrylic paint (you could use fabric paint so it may not fade if washed), using the foam brush. Remove the stencil carefully and let the paint dry completely. Once dried, your placemats are ready to decorate your festive table!
5. Alternatively, you can paint a pattern or phrase with paint freehandedly or even with a sharpie pen, if you have the skills!

Wood is always a good solution to archive a warm feeling, but it doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of money or turn your whole house upside down. You can create your own reclaimed wood wall with simple and easy steps, either by building the wood wall yourself or by buying prefabricated panels. The good thing is that the panels are easy to install and reusable. Reclaimed wood walls are also a great alternative if you love texture and imperfection, cause they will come with some tears, nail holes or splintering.

Imagine to snuggle up by the fireplace with a cup of tea or hot chocolate when snow starts falling. If you already have a fireplace you can consider yourself lucky, if not, don’t get demotivated there are some alternative heating sources which can convey are similar feeling. One of the most common option is an electric fireplace that can be inserted in to a nonworking fireplace. With this selection u don’t have to worry about a mantle and the look is quite similar. Another alternative would be a ethanol fireplace. The difference is, an ethanol fireplace has real flames whereas an electric fireplace only has a simple flame illusion. So, if you rather go for a more realistic look the ethanol fireplace could be a good choice.

Transform a spare room into beautiful winter work shop

Wouldn’t it be great to have a room where u can gather with friends and family and start beautiful projects for winter decorations. This could be either a basement an attic or another spare room you don’t really use. The most important thing would be that the floor is somehow resilient so that mess can be cleaned easy afterwards. If you prefer an authentic heating source a wood burning stove would be definitely a good choice, if there is already a chimney or an outlet installed. Last but not least: a sturdy wooden table and bench and a comfortable sofa would round it all up and ensure a pleasant time to get crafty and have memorable times together.

DIY Craft: How to Make a Tree Trunk Planter

DIY Craft: Tree Trunk Planter

The first step to do is to gather some nice tree trunks or thick branches on a beautiful and stress-releasing fall walk. Make sure to have a 4 or 5 inch tree piece which should have at least 5 inches of height. After that, you will need a drill with a 2 inch forstner drill bit, some thick grit sand paper or a sanding block, soil and a succulent or other plant of your choice.

Now you can peel the bark from the tree piece you have if you want and cut to the length you need. Hollow it out using the drill and sand it to get a smooth surface. If you like, also sand the outside of your tree piece. Now it’s up to you if you want to add some color and paint the tree trunk. To finish it off and add some protection, you can put a coat of protective sealer for wood on it. For a more natural look, you can skip adding the protective sealer.

The last step is to plant your chosen plant. Put some soil and moss grass into the planter and plant your plants. You can use a fitting plastic planter which you will slide into your tree trunk planter to protect the plant’s roots from rotting.

Like the modest colours on the walls, western curtains were made to keep the sun out and warmth in. Fashion was an ancillary concern; interior design was a pleasure afforded to the elite of society rather a mainstream interest like it is today. Think casual, not chic.
Choose organic material of white or light brown colour. Consider tying curtains with rope rather than ribbon to channel the western effect.

Armed Accessories

The Wild West hosted liberal gun laws in addition to an allowance of blades and other weapons. Dress tabletops or create a small museum of Wild West gun and knife artifacts. To take the act of accessorizing a step further, consider purchasing a dummy from a mall or online vendor, dressing it in Wild West vests, boots, lasso and other assorted duds.

Colour Palette   

The colour palette of a rustic interior is always soft, never dramatic. You can go two ways with the rustic look, light and airy or rich and earthy. Think of the colours you might find in nature and replicate them; think white, moss green, slate blue, shades of brown for earthy tones and white, tan, amber and shades of grey for something light.

Walls     

Your walls should be full of texture and interest. Whether that be stone work, suede textured paint or exposed beams, you want to create the feel of a homemade home. Aged wood and uneven finishes all contribute to the natural look. With the colours you don’t want anything too strong, instead stick to dark and inviting or light and subtle.

Floor

Without a doubt the floor should be wooden, or if it’s a kitchen that you’re decorating, you could consider a stone tile, though nothing too polished. Rugs work well on the floor in places such as a living room, or somewhere you might want to create a cosier feel.

Decor

Furniture should be made from wood, though for a modern twist you could use occasional metal furniture too, especially things like steel. Avoid any metals that are shiny or precious. Pops of colour also work well if you’re looking to create a modern twist on the rustic look, but otherwise stick to a natural palette. Pieces such as sofas or covered stools should be leather, to create a luxurious, but rustic feel. Soft furnishings should also be natural, like wool, hessian, cotton or linen. You should also definitely include a fireplace in the design, as no room, whichever one it is in the house, is complete in the rustic design without one. It could be a real one or a modern one, but avoid a Victorian one as it doesn’t fit with the aesthetic.
