Everyone loves having space within the home especially when trying to decorate it. However, within some homes that quality comes in small supply. Typically, in larger homes you do not have to work as hard at trying to accomplish this task because it already has spacious qualities. Take a look at some of the home decorating tips on how to increase the space within your home or give the illusion of more space. Regardless of the size of your home these design principles can be used in home decorating:

Home Decorating: Giving the Illusion of Space

Use neutral or light colors to enlarge your room

Image via: Coastal Living

[ad#co-1]

Neutral or Light Colors

The coloring of the space can either enhance or take away from the space. Try using light and neutral colors, to help make the space seem open and more airy. The colors force the walls to disappear and blend in versus standing out and becoming a space consumer. Use whites, beige, grays and muted pastels for this tip. Also, try to avoid using large pieces of furniture. Bulky furniture again will take away from the space, some great ways to change this setback is by using multi-purpose furniture that will be able to give storage, decor and an overall function to the space for your home decorating ambiance.

Neutral Colors and Windows to Add Space to the Interiors

Image via: Boxman

The Use of Lighting

The value of the space can be fully achieved by how much lighting you let in. Natural light can illuminate the space and therefore make the space feel again, more open. Pull back the shading or use light colored fabrics/sheers for the window treatments. Remove anything blocking the view of the light coming in from the windows. Now if you do not have enough windows then various sizes of lamps with brighter lights will also do. Avoid using ceiling lights because they can usually cut the height of the room or space. Mirrors are a great room openers as well. Mirrors carry some similar qualities to that of a window, being able to add depth and space depending on the placement. Try placing them on the opposite sides of the windows, on the sliding doors of the bedroom closet, or at the end of the hallway to make it seem extended.

Bring on the drama with these gorgeous double mirrors!

Image via: Decorating Den Central

Use Storage Spaces

The spaces that we can forget to use at times can be our greatest allies when wanting to create a larger space. The kitchen drawers and cabinets, the space on top of the refrigerator, bathroom sink cabinets and counter tops, shelves over doorways are all storing ways that you can use to de-clutter and organize your space to max. Use the forgotten spaces within your home as storage spaces.

Take advantage of hidden space – like under this bed

Image via: Sunset Ideas

Space within the home is always a plus. However, most home have some issues with this characteristic. Fortunately, there are some home decorating ideas to help curve this problem. With a few tricks that help to fool the eye, you can add the space and depth to your interiors. So take a look above at the suggestions and let them work for your home.

Guest Blogger #791, Entry #1879, November 29, 2012

Buying appliances and implements that go together to make someone’s own home theater system can be quite a herculean task. With all the technical difficulties and instructional brouhaha that end up confusing and misleading an ordinary buyer, the simple acts alone of knowing what to and choosing which to buy can be a nightmare. Hence, WestFair TV has come up with a list of basic tips to guide its customers and potential clients as they dive into the world of home cinemas. Being in the business of audio-video equipment, supplies and furnishings for over fifty (50) years, they are a trusted name in the state of Connecticut. Here are tips you need to muse over before making any purchases:

Consider how much space you have for your home theater

Image via: Flickr

[ad#co-1]

1. Space.

They emphasize on how much space is available or can be spared by the client in their homes to give way to a whole new set of implements. This may mean that certain upholstery may have to be moved or transferred, if not redone altogether.

2. Buy new or upgrade.

There may be stuff in the customer’s house that could need only a few tweaks here and there and a few attachments that could just be enough for an upgrade. This is best for those on a budget as they need not spend more on buying mew appliances or fixtures. The old television sets, monitors, or speakers may just as well do with a few changes. On the other hand, for those who can afford it, or are basically buying for the first time, new models for audio-video equipment are recommended. Customers must also prefer to buy a model that can be easily upgraded so as to avoid being led into purchasing new equipment every now and then.

Do you want to buy new or upgrade to a new home theater system?

Image via: Homedit

3. Features.

Before buying any equipment and implements, it is recommended that the one should make a list of exactly what he/she wants to have in his/her home theater system. Basically, what the customer wants to experience dictates how he should experience it. Meaning, what equipment matters and what should be bought to see to it that the customer gets what he/she wants. This also dictates the features of the appliances he will purchase. Whether it will be a home-theater-in-a-box, a HDTV system, a projector cinema system, or a turntable system. It will depend on how the customer visualizes his home theater system to look like and how it should work for their family.

All in all, WestFair TV also recommends that the potential buyer be aware of warranties that go with the equipment they purchase. Buying from a dealer with a service center is also a must, since it will be easier for the customer to seek help and assistance for any technical difficulties. WestFair TV is one of the few home theater system appliance dealers that have such perks, and friendly and efficient staff that go with it. So, for further inquiries and a quick look on the appliance models they have in store, do log on to, www.westfairtv.com, and make that home cinema viewing dream come true.

Jacquiline Grant is a small business owner who sells various audio video systems for home entertainment. Along with her family, they started the business 3 years ago as they got inspired with the services of Westfair TV; supplier of high quality audio and video systems.

In creating ceiling ideas for your small interiors, a lot of us are oblivious of the fact that among the focal points in our various homes, the ceiling will always be among the top. Although in most home settings, you notice that the ceilings can be painted a neutral color, white but presently, all that is changing because a lot of creative minds have come up with ideas that will transform your ceiling from that blank canvas to an attractive ad and beautiful spot in your home. Listed below are some ideas that will make people easily notice your ceiling.

Ceiling ideas for your interiors

Choosing the Ideal Lighting for your Kitchen

As we think about which lighting type is ideal for your kitchen, I want to draw us back to several years ago. This continually growing trend has given rise to the need for different types of lighting in the kitchen so that whichever activity your family decides to carry out in the kitchen, the issue of lighting will not cause a hitch. Listed below are the top and most popular types of lighting for your kitchen.

Choosing a Welcoming Exterior Front Door Color

Choosing a welcoming exterior front door color has never been an easy task but when you know how and when to go about it, then it can become a lot easier. First, you need to know that the type of color you chose for the entrance door to your home goes a long way to influence the surroundings of such home. You don’t have to choose the color of your door based on the existing colors in the interior. For the best results, make a choice of your color based on what you have outside the home. Listed below are certain tips to keep you going in your intended home improvement

What color will attract and welcome guests?

Choose the right pigment: You can only succeed in this by first, noting the natural hues of the landscape of your home and other buildings close to it. This will help you to go for such color that would not in any way, clash with the exterior of your home. Do you have portions of your home that has stone, brick or any other natural material? If yes, then these should inspire your decision of the right color for your exterior front door.

Organizing your Summer Garage for the Fall

When organizing your summer garage for the fall season, create more fun than stress if you know how to go about it. If you are among those getting your garage ready for the fall, the tips listed below will go a long way in helping you out. They are:

Categorize: This is the first step towards organizing your garage. The same thing applies to the regular home improvement tools, car repair kit and the grill items.

Helping your Kids Organize their Room

Have you been shying away from helping your kids organize their rooms? If your answer is yes, now is the time for you to stamp your feet and say no to such scenes as tossed toys, heaped clothes, overflowing drawers and messy beds. Continually throwing up your hands in exasperation will in no way, help the situation but taking charge and showing your children how they can maximize space and be more comfortable when they keep their rooms clean will help the situation. I want to point out that you should not do this alone, the children should be actively involved because that is the only way they will learn the necessary skill of organizing their spaces, even as adults.

De-clutter the room: Whether you like it or not, even though there is a playroom in the home for your kids, they would always play in their rooms and because of this, you always find their room stuffed or scattered with assorted toys and clothes. If this is the case, get hold of your garbage bag and with the kids right beside you, get rid of those toys and clothes they have outgrown. You can donate such items to charity or dispose them properly.

‘Simple Must-Do’ Tips – Sharing Bathroom, Area Rugs & Mirrors

Simple Organizing Ideas for a Shared Bathroom:

De-clutter the bathroom by ridding the shelves and drawers of those items or products that are no longer needed. If it has been there for over six months without being used, then it is not needed.

Transfer the medicines to the kitchen since research has shown that steam and heat from the bathroom can ruin your medicines.

Every user of the bathroom should have an assigned marked or different colored basket to put his or her toiletries in. Since it is not advisable to share things like eye drops, grooming supplies and other toiletries, this step is necessary.

Create places for the towels, extra toilet paper and soap. Every other thing has to go to the storage or elsewhere.

How to Choose the Perfect Living Room Area Rug

It would interest you to know that wall-to-wall carpeting for living rooms is fast becoming obsolete. The in-thing now is the use of area rugs, especially when it comes to the living room. They are known to be more practical and at the same time, beautiful but only, if you choose and use them appropriately. Check out the following tips.

Texture: This is another tip that comes in handy when it comes to how to choose area rugs for your living room. Prior to buying your rug, you should decide the texture you want. If you need a rug that has soft feeling and adds warmth to the living room, then wool is the texture to go for. If you need rugs that are a bit rough, then you should go for those made from natural materials like jute and sisal. Silk is another material for soft rugs but it comes more expensive and easily absorbs stains and dirt.

How to Creatively Decorate with Mirrors

Decorating the Hallways and Staircases: Let me shift my attention to the hallway or staircase. Do you know you can add a lot of glamour to this part of your home when you hang mirrors that reflect light along the walls? Yes, this type of decoration is known to make darker spaces lighter and to spruce up the look, unique designs like colorful flowers can also be painted on the mirror frames. If you are not that good in artistic designs, you can just paint plain and simple but color-matching stripes along the edges of the frames so that it blends with the existing color scheme of your home.

Ever since the launch of my ebook – 111 Simple Tips for your Everyday Home, I have been asked how-to questions for each of my 11 rooms that I cover in the book. I have had questions relating to color, maximizing space, creative organization ideas and how to make your home more welcoming.

I decided, I would start a new series on Stagetecture called – ‘Simple Must-Do Tips’. Each week I will pick 3 tips from the 111 of the ebook and expand upon them to help you get more insight into that specific room.
‘Simple Must-Do Tips’ – Hallway, Kitchen & Home Office

How to Make your Entryway More Inviting:

Create a welcoming entry with plenty of light, space and decor. When the pathway to your home is narrow, it makes it difficult to freely navigate to your home and this could give visitors the impression that your home is restricted to them. So, if you don’t want them having this impression, it is then time for you to consider broadening your entry. You can even go a step further to beautify the pathway by using attractive pavers like yellow bricks or any other color you feel comfortable with.

Choose Inspiring Colors for your Home Office:

Your Office Furniture: This is the second factor to be considered when it comes to choosing colors for your home office. A lot of us do not know this but when it comes to the style and design of your home or home office, the furniture plays a vital role. If for example the furniture is made of dark colors like mahogany or cherry, then you should settle for deep orange or warm yellow to achieve a soothing work environment. If on the other hand your furniture is of maple or birch which are known to be light-colored woods, the best colors for your walls should blue or green.

How to Maximize Space in your Small Kitchen

You might not know this but cabinets will always play a vital role as far as your kitchen’s design is concerned. This in other words mean that whether you are getting a new kitchen or trying to improve an existing one, cabinets will always be a must have. Therefore, you should be prudent in the choice of kitchen cabinets you make. Before you make use of the tips provided below, you first have to decide the entire size and overall layout of your kitchen and when done, decide whether you want to keep the same layout or go for a new one, keeping in mind, your cooking habits and needs.

Guest Blogger #571, Entry #1288, June 15, 2012

Whether you’ve upgraded from your apartment to a town house (but you’re still suffering from small-kitchen syndrome) you’ve had to downgrade during the recession, or you’ve simply been dealing with a postage-stamp sized cooking space for as long as you can remember and your buildup of gadgets has gotten overwhelming, you may find yourself seeking ways to up the ante when it comes to storage space in this pivotal part of your home. But short of doing a complete overhaul that encroaches on another room, you may not be certain how to go about meeting your goal (especially if you happen to be operating on a limited budget). So here are just a few creative ways that you can add more storage without going crazy.

Create a kitchen that you love to be in

Image via

[ad#co-1]

Assess you current kitchen space

The first thing you can do is find ways to maximize the space you already have. Suppose, for example, that you have a lot of vertical space to work with, but you’re only stacking dishes, cookware, and so on to about half the height available on each shelf. You don’t necessarily want to end up with items stacked precariously high in order to use all available space, so why not think about installing additional shelves so that you have more surface area to work with? This could allow you to utilize the cabinetry you already rather than shelling out a ton of dough for new cabinets.

You might also consider replacing only certain cabinets, like those that overlap in a corner space. Just because the builders didn’t think to put in corner cabinets in order to make this area usable doesn’t mean you have to replace all of the cabinetry in your kitchen. You may be able to simply overhaul the corners (or even add Lazy Susans as a cheap alternative). And of course, structuring your space with a variety of kitchen organizers could help you to maximize usage. Storage racks, bins, and other types of organizers can help you to make the space you have more efficient.

Use cabinets and storage to their best use

But perhaps you have unused space where additional cabinetry could be added. If you happen to have an island or bar area that has open space above it you could hang new cabinets from the ceiling in this area or simply add a pot rack to get bulky cookware out of the cabinets and clear the space for something else. Or if you have overhead cabinets that fall short of the ceiling, you could tear out the old ones and replace them with something taller (or potentially even expand the ones you already have, although a seamless renovation could be difficult). Replacing only a portion of your cabinetry in order to enhance your storage capabilities is bound to be far less expensive than tearing out all of your cupboards and putting in new ones (even if they are more functional).

Your cozy kitchen has a lot of potential!

Image via

In truth, without a major renovation you probably won’t be able to secure a lot of extra storage space in the kitchen (it’s not as if that pods promo code in your email inbox will help you here – unless you want your storage in the driveway). But you can definitely find ways to use the storage you do have to your best advantage, as well as tap unused space (often overhead) to expand your storage potential.

Now that spring is officially underway there is a desire to take advantage of Mother Nature’s most prized assets – sun, fresh air and to be amongst foliage and nature. Outdoor living can be enjoyable or it can be a challenge if you live in a smaller home, an urban location, or an apartment with limited outdoor space. Here are a few ways to make the most of the season and still bring nature into your small and cozy outdoor space.

Enjoy your small outdoor space

Assess your outdoor living space:

While you may not have a sprawling patio to put pool furniture there may be more usable area than you think. Measure out your terrace, patio, or balcony area and take these measurements to your garden furniture or online site. Outdoor furniture in polywood, wrought iron, aluminum, and resin wicker styles are usually smaller in profile than large wood and upholstered furniture styles. Look for bistro chair and table sets that maximize vertical height and still enable 2 people to sit comfortably with a table. Don’t be limited by what you think is a small outdoor living area.

Bring color and textures to your space

Image via: Nicole Bowden.Pinterest

Add color to every corner!

Any small space can become a entertaining spot

Enliven your space with plants and decor:

While your area might be small you can still take advantage of nature by adding hanging plants, potted plants and key decor pieces such as lanterns or hanging lights throughout your small patio or terrace area. Bring in a colorful all-weather area rug to place below your furniture and decorate your chairs with gorgeous throw pillows. You will be surprised how quickly your cozy small outdoor space feels comfortable and inviting. When using decorative outdoor pieces, ensure you measure out how much space it will use and that there is sufficient walking space around your pieces. Try and use ceiling hung and wall decor as much as possible to avoid this problem.

Add greenery and window boxes to add texture and warmth

Image via: Paris Nights and New York Lights.Tumblr

Every home should be able to enjoy outdoor living regardless of the space allotted to you. Even if you don’t have a space to call your own, invest in some portable picnic lounge chairs that you can take to your local park along with a picnic basket and a good book. Many cities have community gardens that the community can partake in and lounge and meet your neighbors. If you prefer to take advantage of nature from the inside of your home, consider window boxes full with beautiful seasonal blooms or even beautiful faux varieties. Enjoying the outdoors doesn’t require an expansive area, just the ability to let nature into your lifestyle!

When we create outdoor spaces, from our porches and decks, to the stepping stone garden that meanders around our house, do we ever think about is this area accessible for all? Outdoor spaces especially have the characteristics of being uneven, narrow, and often times unaccessible for those who have special needs, as well as elderly, or those who have small children with strollers.

Today, I’m pleased to have Guest Blogger, Wendy Martin Turley from Parenting Blind By Design, to discuss how to make your outdoor areas accessible and enjoyable for all. After all, when you have you entertain this season, what is better than inviting the neighborhood over for a barbecue? Feel comfortable and confident that your home is enjoyed by all your guests!

Outdoor Spaces for Everyone

There’s always one house on the block that has people in their backyard all summer long. But how can you do this when your house has special needs?

First thing people think of is let’s play it safe. This is often an uninspired look that leads to a place no one can enjoy and therefore isn’t used.

You don’t need a flat square space even if you have a walker or wheelchair. What you do need are wide secure paths. Make sure that all entrances and exits are ease to pass through. Any stairs or ramps should have handrails. Deck or patio edges should be bordered by a railing, wall, benches or planters. This will help lessen the chances of falls. Also, when using a builder in your area be aware of local by-laws on how to construct decks and patios in your area because if they are constructed incorrectly you may not be able to sell your property before it’s repaired. These by-laws are there for safety too, so get the permits you need and feel confident that your new space is a safe place.

A great space for everyone has been well thought out.

Dos and Don’ts for creating your outdoor space:

Dos:

– Do decide on a number of people maximum you want to be out there at one time.

– Do create zones with wide paths between zones (3’) for wheelchair or walker use.

– Do create a space where wheelchair or walkers can turn around in (5’ dia. Space)

Create outdoor areas that have enough wheelchair clearance

– Do make a space where walkers or wheelchairs can go within the space (i.e. lounge space) that has them in the space and not within the walkway and they don’t get blocked in either.

– Do invest in good furniture which has the seat height of 18”-19”.

– Do plan on where you are going to store your cushions, because no one wants a wet seat. A storage bench can add to your seating and add needed storage space.

– Do try to keep the lounge area away from the BBQ area for safety reasons.

– Do if you can have a window close to the BBQ area so that food and supplies can be passed through and hot food is kept off the walking paths.

Keep clear around barbecue area away from sitting areas

Don’ts

– Don’t use gravel for walkways or broken slate, these are tripping hazards. Do use solid surface treatments, like concrete (can be coloured or stained).

– Don’t use a rug, they become a tripping hazard and makes the use of walkers or wheelchairs impossible to manoeuvre over.

– Don’t clutter the space with things that can become tripping hazards as the numbers of people increase in your space.

Small planters are nice; however, they should carefully used. The pottery bowl of strawberries is pretty on the corner of the stairs, but it’s a tripping hazard and a barrier to reaching the railing. Instead, build in planters on either side of the stairs and along the deck. At the right height the built-in planters can hold vegetables, fruit and flowers a person in a wheelchair or using a walker can putter around in.

Do make sure that you have shade for the lounge and eating areas as these are the places where you will spend the most of your outdoor time.

Lighting is another special safety feature that will extend your time on your patio or deck. Light your paths and edging of the deck or patio. There are many kinds of lights out there, but LED lights have come a long way and rope lighting can be laid in a garden bed, or by the path to give that extra guidance. LED lighting has come far recently and it’s improving as time goes by. They are cost effective too. Candles and tiki torches should be kept to the minimum also, because of the increase in fire hazards. If you want natural bug protection, try marigolds or other indigenous plants that secret scents that repels the local bugs.

I won’t be recommending a specific brand of outdoor furniture act I am a Canadian Interior Decorator and not familiar with what sells within you region. I just will leave this with the note that, nature knows no colour limits, and with today’s developments in outdoor furniture, ensure that it is solid, fade resistant and rust resistant.

Ensure shaded areas for lounging and seating

The patio or deck have become actual rooms now within our homes, so don’t feel guilty when you’re investing in its furnishings.

Deck the deck when it’s cool with pillows and throws. Table top fires can be purchased and enjoyed also. But always make sure that you have a fire extinguisher nearby the main exit.

Enjoy your dishes outside by mixing and matching old dishes for that mismatched feel. People will have memories of those plates and you can create conversations about those memories.

Just eat, drink and be merry. Life is for those that reach out and grasp it. Simply plan everything step by step.

The Plan:

How safe are the entrances and exits of your yard and home. (Should have 2 exits from backyard)

Wide even paths that are well lit. (3’ wide)

Zones for entertaining (BBQ, Lounge, and Dining)

Do provide a 5’ diameter space for wheelchairs and walkers can turn around that’s not near the stairs.

Ensure that the deck, patio, stairs and ramps are surrounded by something like a railing, built-in planters, and bench seating/storage.

Decide on the number of people you want at any given time on your deck or patio and plan for that many. Include a space where a wheelchair or walker can go that’s out of the way of traffic but easily accessible by the person. Don’t make them feel like they are in the way or have been tossed aside.

Do buy furniture with a seat height of 18”x19” high, for mobility restricted people.

Do plan on where you’re going to store those cushions because you don’t want to be always sitting on a wet cushion.

Think of plants as a raised garden bed for the aging gardener.

Well I hope this gives some people ideas on what they can do if they to entertain people with special needs. I know it’s always fun here because life always tosses something new into the fray.

The big thing is, just get out and enjoy yourself!

Wendy Martin Turley is an Interior Decorating Student at Humber College and will be graduating in April 2011. I’m a wife and a mother. Sounds simple right? Here’s where it gets complicated. I’m no bored housewife. My husband, Peter is blind and my son was born 11 weeks premature. I learnt fast how important great design makes life easier and possible in some cases. I started with our nursery and then decided that there was a need out there for Great Design to make living possible for those with disabilities. Also find Wendy on Twitter
