A staycation is the perfect vacation away from the norm this summer holiday season. Labor Day, the official last holiday of the season offers travelers a chance to take part in one last weekend of fun before school gets back in session and the weather starts to cool down. But if you haven’t had the time to plan a vacation or are on a budget, consider a staycation instead. Staying local with few dollars and some creativity you can have as much fun as if you were miles away. Here are some fun staycation ideas that will get you and your family excited this Labor Day weekend.

How to Find Labor Day Staycation Ideas

[ad#co-1]

Take a short vacation to the beach:

If you live in close proximity to the beach, it’s time for some fun in the sun. Post Labor Day weekend, life will start getting more hectic, the temperature will start changing and the beach days will become a fond memory. So, soak in the warmth, relax in the sand, and enjoy the beach one last time before autumn.

Take a weekend getaway to a local attraction:

A weekend getaway is perfect if you have a city that you don’t explore much! If crowded beaches or lakes are not the way you want to spend your Labor Day weekend, create your own water park in the backyard. Get your kids involved to set it up. Think water balloons, water guns, kiddie pools, and slip-n-slides. The best part about setting up a water park in your own backyard is that it’s safe and you can let your kids stay as long as they want.

Travel around your own city:

With busy schedules, we tend to get caught up with the same routine and habit of visiting same places and restaurants. This Labor Day weekend, take the time to explore areas of your city you don’t normally visit. Find new spots to shop and dine. For added adventure, consider public transportation.

Need more staycation ideas? Look at these resources:

Real Simple has a good article on how to enjoy a staycation at home

By taking a staycation, not only will you save money and avoid traffic, you will also get a chance to truly appreciate what your home and city have to offer. Whatever you choose, make sure to get away from it all by staying away from your laptop and unplugging your phone.

Escaping for a weekend getaway sounds like a super romantic and an exciting way to spend the day of love with your love. Isn’t it?
Pick a Local Spot in Your Own City

Is there a craft brewery or a café that you have been wanting to visit from long but haven’t got a chance yet? Now is the time to explore and become a tourist in your own city. Just like you would visit local joints on a vacation, take time to visit all the restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops this Valentine’s Day.

Explore the gems of your hometown

Image via: Travelers Picks

Fitness Staycation

When you are away from home and checked into a beautiful hotel with a spa and a large pool don’t you get excited? Then why not bring back this excitement by visiting a gym in your area and enjoying the fitness session followed by some spa and pampering.

Share a romantic spa treatment

Plan the Valentine’s Day Menu

Image via: Kikki.K

Not that there is anything wrong with ordering in or eating out, but there is something just so romantic about brunch in bed. Isn’t it? So, why not plan your meals ahead, including an indulgent brunch, light lunch, and a romantic dinner that will be fun to cook together.

Have a Bonfire

If the weather permits, build up a cozy bonfire in your backyard and spend some quality time with each other. Bring a blanket for both of you to cuddle up if the night turns colder. Don’t forget to roast marshmallows and carry a bottle of wine or champagne. If setting up a bonfire is not possible, then consider to camp out close to the fireplace with some throws and pillows.

This Valentine’s Day, relax, rest, and romance your special someone with one of these staycation ideas. Just make sure to add something that reflects the two of you such as your favorite dish or some music with memories.

Summer is the perfect time to get away from it all. You have been studying and working hard throughout the year, and now it’s time for a well deserved break. But what if you are trying to save some money and an expensive family vacation is not in the budget this year? Well, don’t worry. We just got you covered with some fun family staycation ideas. This way you can escape travel expenses and still take a break from your daily routine.

Fun Family Staycation Ideas – Save Money In Town

Explore the gems of your hometown

Image via: Pinterest

[ad#co-1]

Explore your home city

It’s sad but true that most people don’t bother to explore the gems of their hometown. Whether you live in a big city or a small suburb, there are sure to be local sights, activities, and landmarks your family can enjoy. Make a plan to discover your own city as a traveler would. Visit museums, historic sites, or simply try out of the way restaurant you have never been before.

Backyard camping

Pitch a tent in your backyard, pack up your sleeping bags, and grab a few flashlights. Make sure to leave your mobile phones, laptops, and other gadgets back home. Remember you are camping.

For dinner, cookout on the grill and roast s’mores. Once night sets in, plan classic camping activities: build a fire, tell stories, and read books.

Set up a tent in your backyard and go camping

Image via: buzzfeed.com

Stay in a nearby hotel

Staying in a nearby hotel for a day or two is a great way to have a getaway without going far at all. Look for a hotel with amenities like spa, pool, game room and more. Create some time for yourself to get a well-deserved beauty treatment or a massage. These days many hotels offer staycation specials, so be sure to find out.

No matter what you plan or which activity you choose, remember that staycation is supposed to be a vacation. It’s a chance to spend some quality time with your loved ones. So, unplug the television, disconnect the internet, and leave your phones back home. Reconnect and bond with your family-now that’s a real getaway!

<nbsp>

A staycation will undoubtedly save a lot of money of yours but it is also appealing in other ways too. Staying at home during this summer vacation will also spare you from the hazards of driving hundreds of miles, hand-washing clothes and dishes, or spending tons of money as the fare of a luxurious hotel. Check these ideas to make you home vacation enjoyable and attractive.

Staycation is the opportunity to spend quality times with your family.

Image via: Israel Smith

Pretend to Be on a Real Vacation

While in staycation, some people do not bother setting aside a budget or taking leave from their works. But, it is very important to treat it like a real vacation. Let your family and friends know that you are going on a vacation. Avoid using gadgets and checking emails during vacation-related activities. Budget a small amount for a few meals out, gas for day trips, and other incidentals. Invest some dollars to make your home like a hotel and indulge on garden and cleaning services to get yourself rid of regular household chores.

Camping in backyard – what a great idea!

Image via: Pinterest

Create the Feeling of a Vacation

Using cheery and comfy accessories can add fun and relaxation into your staycation. Vacation is mostly about passing idle times in the most enjoyable ways. So, buy a hammock to sleep or to pass idle time with a book, a tubtrug filled with cool water to comfort your feet, a tepee for your kids, one or two tree swing, and a swing chair to relax and thereby creating a holiday feel in your back garden. Buy beach pillows and cushions and create a beach impression on your couch.

Create a hotel room feeling in your bedroom.

Image via: Apartment Therapy

Explore Local Treasures

Staycation gives you a chance of exploring your local treasures. If you have kids, raid the local planetariums, observatories, zoos, botanical gardens, aquariums, and museums. These will be the exciting ways to teach your kids about art, science, sports, history, animal world, and aviation. These places arrange for separate programs for preteens and teenagers too. Local beach, community swimming pools, or water parks will be soothing options in these hot summer days. Besides being entertaining to the kids, these places are suitable for family trips too.

Party, Party, & Party

If you want, you can plan for different themed parties for every evening of your staycation. Enjoy a pizza night with some easy recipes, host a neighborhood get-together, plan for a Mexican patio party with flavorful foods, or just go for a TV night while throwing a simple cocktail party for friends and family.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-51265" alt="Host a pizza night with your near and dear ones.
Staycation might not have been popular during the days of cheap air travel and booming economy. However, if you can plan it well, it can be a blessing in disguise. It gives you chance to spend intimate time with your family and explore your locale like a tourist.

A family vacation is not a luxury but rather a necessity. It keeps the family closer and gives time to spend together. It is an opportunity to know your kids better and so with you to them. Taking your time to be with your family in a vacation is a great way to escape from your work routines. It tends to take away your stress and fill in happy memories.

You can still have a family vacation locally!

Image via

[ad#co-3]

A family vacation does not have to get you out of your budget. You do not have to pile up loans just to have a getaway with your family. A careful planning will give you a great family vacation without emptying your pocket.

To do this, you have to know these useful tips on how to save money on a local vacation:

Have a memorable vacation without going far

Remember that the goal is to spend quality time together with your family. Choose a place that is a few hours drive that your family has not yet travel around. It would save you money on airfares or higher fuel costs. Visit your local travel agent and get brochures or look online for local attractions in your geographic location. From a few hours away drive by car, to staying at home at night and having a “day vacation” during the daytime.

Reserve lodging ahead of time.

The cheapest way to have an accommodation is to check-in a backpackers’ hotel. This is like a dorm-type hotel that can accommodate single, twin and family guests for an overnight stay. This is quite cheaper than other hotel accommodations. You might want to consider camping if you and your family have not experienced it yet. But the best option is when you have relatives or friends who live near the place you intend to go. You may ask for just a night’s accommodation for your family.

Save money and bring food

You may bring food with you before going to your destination. Remember to seal it properly to prevent it from being rotten. Also, you can buy from groceries and pack your snacks and lunch. Buying food and drinks in your destination might be very expensive, if available. Thus, bringing your packed food is a brilliant idea.

Renting a vacation rental or time share locally could be inexpensive

Image via

Choose a location that isn’t expensive to enjoy

Consider activities like forest hiking, visiting national parks and other similar places that require lesser spending. Also consider looking into time shares, rental properties in your local area, you’d be surprised how much fun it is to just go stay at someone else’s house! Bring along some movie rentals, food and enjoy your family in town!

Remember to plan ahead for this local family vacation. By doing this, you can avail of great discounts for early or advance reservation. Enjoy your family vacation!

Entry #446, March 13, 2011

March and April usually mean Spring Break for the kids at some point of the spring and that means vacation thoughts for mom and dad. Whether you are trying to save money, or are just discouraged over the rising cost of gas and airline costs, it doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy all of the amenities of a vacation, instead try a ‘Staycation’.

“It’s a new word in the travel dictionary: a “staycation” is a vacation that happens with all the benefits of fun and relaxation, but without traveling anywhere.

Staycations become especially appealing when the price of fuel rises, cranking up costs for air travel and road trips; when the economy falters; and when air travel gets so stressful during peak seasons that “just staying home” looks pretty good.” – About.com

Here are some ideas for staycations that can get you and your kids excited for Spring Break without the concern of packing suitcases like your traveling around the world, for only one week!

Your local pool may be all you need to enjoy a ‘staycation’!

Staycation ideas:

1.) Do day trips:

Take them to the best attractions in your area: the ones visitors enjoy, but locals somehow never find time to visit. Take the money you’re saving on airfares or gas and spend it on fun outings: like a Duck Tour, or a Ghost Walk, if you live in a city; or an outdoor adventure if you’re not near a town. Virtually everywhere, these days, has some kind of fun activity being marketed to tourists: when you’re on staycation, that tourist is you.

For more budget-minded staycation outings: try local parks, local aquatic center (- lots have wave pools and slides).

2.) Stay in:

When you’re at home, spend time just relaxing and enjoying family time. Splurge on a house-cleaning service: you’re on stayvacation, right? And unless it’s your pleasure to get creative in the kitchen, eat out or order in.

The word “vacation”, by the way, comes from the Latin word “vacare”, meaning “to be free, empty, to be at leisure”.

Stay around the house and enjoy your home!

3.) The challenge of a staycation, though:

How to be at leisure in your own home, and turn off all that busyness of daily life? Not easy, especially for those who work at home. Meanwhile, quality time with the kids may elude you during a home-sweet-home staycation, as kids get busy with friends or their usual pastimes.

Your at-home staycation may work better if you proclaim certain days to be sacrosanct “staycation dates”, resist attending regular scheduled activities, and nix any temptation to decide it’s a great day to clean out the basement with everyone’s help.

Or try this solution …

4.) Staycation, Type 2: Local Lodgings

With this “staycation”, you still stay local, but you do make a move away from home. Stay at a local family-friendly hotel, maybe one with a cool kids’ program: upscale brands such as Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton have some creative programs at their kids clubs. And of course many more budget-minded choices are available too.

Once you’ve got your home-away-from-home, do sightseeing, take outings; or just chill out.

Enjoy local attractions like the zoo

5.) Staycation: The Bottom Line :

Ultimately, “vacation” is more about a state of mind than about where you are. If you can relax, leave work behind, do fun stuff with your kids, then that’s a staycation, even in your own house.

Meanwhile, many people travel far, far away on holidays, and yet don’t enjoy a good mental break or getaway because they stay wired to their busy lives — or even to their workplace — via cellphones and Blackberries.
