Goodbye winter and Hello spring!  We all appreciate the fabulous things that the winter atmosphere brings but now it’s spring turn to brighten and liven up our interiors.  And what better way to invite spring into your interiors than by some simple crafts.  Stencil crafting is one of the most simplistic and dynamic ways to do just that.  So take a look below at some stencil markings that you can do for your DIY spring-inspired stencil craft ideas for your interiors.

Colorful Stencil Dishes

Spring is all about colors, bright and vibrant colors to be exact.  The colors help to bring in the warmth and life that spring carries.  So little touches make all the difference, take or purchase plain white dishes.  Then get templates for the images that you want on them; like farm animals, flowers etc.  Place the shape on top of some contact paper and outline with a pencil the shape.  Cut out the shape with a craft knife, remove the shape from the rest of the paper.  Peel the backing away and set the stencil to a clean surfaced dish or mug, being sure to center the image.  Fill in the outline with a soft brush and dishwasher-safe PermEnamel paint, after you have filled it in let it stand for a few minutes.  Then carefully take off the contact paper, clean up any edges with a damp cotton swab then allow the paint to cure for at least 10 days.

Basic Stencil on your Window Shades

How about designing your own window treatments?  You can take some ordinary window shades and transform them into custom made DIY spring craft for all to admire.  Select the stencil that you prefer to use, and it might be best to use a simple stencil with strong attributes an intricate flora piece or a bird cage could be some that would be perfect focal points for your shade.  Then center the stencil on the shade, so that it lines up with the top center of the shade.  Just follow the stencil directions for using the stencil brush and acrylic paint to tenderly dampen the design on the shade and let it stand for 30 minutes.  Repeat the process for a second coating and wait another 30 minutes before gently removing the stencil, have the shade dry for another hour before hanging it.

Blanket Ideas

You can even bring stencil design onto your bedding or throw blankets.  The choice is yours if you decide on using a blanket that is solid or has a pattern.  Now this craft can be a bit different because you can actually take a fresh floral and use them as the stencil instead of a stencil cut out.  Preferably leaves or branches from plants because they lay down better, place them all around the blanket and use a color or neutral spray paint and begin to lightly spray over the blanket until you have achieved the desired look for your blanket.  Carefully remove the leaves or branches from the blanket and let it sit for at least an hour or until the paint fully dries.

Spring is in the air everywhere you look around and now it is time to let it shine in your interiors.  Stencil crafting is one of the most creative and influential DIY spring craft to add variety and life to your interiors.  So go back and take a look at some of the ideas and places for you to use stencil work then go for it.  Also, stencil crafting can also be used on the walls, table linens, and more!

We all have interior spaces that start out pretty sterile until we throw in some furniture and accessories. But while you know you need items like a couch and coffee table, a dining room set, and plenty of lamps, you might be a little sketchy on how to decorate when it comes to your walls. Some people shell out major money for artwork that speaks to them while others frame cheapo posters. But how can you tell if these vertical adornments go with your furniture, your home, or your overall style? You might as well just leave the walls blank! Okay, settle down. There are myriad ways to decorate your walls, and not all of them require you to be an expert on art and interior decorating. Here are just a few ways to spice up your space that don’t call for a curator.

Stencils and decals.

If you love the look of patterned wallpaper but you’re not too keen to get busy with the adhesive, you can recreate the look you crave and add some visual interest to your walls by purchasing stencils, paint, and a sponge. Or if you’d like something a little more organic, try a website like whatisblik.com that offers a wide variety of easy-to-apply (and remove) decals, some of which are works of art in themselves.

Color blocking.

One of the latest trends in fashion and décor is color blocking, and you, too, can incorporate it into your space by blocking out sections of the wall with painter’s tape and applying different colors of paint to each portion. You could go all Piet Mondrian with primary colors, or go for something a little more subdued and organic a la Mark Rothko, but modern trends also allow for variations on the theme, such as color blocks that overlap and the use of diagonal lines instead of traditional rectangles.

Water wall.

If painting isn’t your thing or you’re looking for something a bit off the beaten path, you might consider adding an element that not only dazzles the eyes, but also the ears. There are all kinds of water features that you might choose to occupy a wall in your home, from those that hang to floor-based models. And you can opt for a sluice-style that runs over rough rock or a metal plate, a drip system of some sort, or even a more conventional and 3-dimensional installation where one bowl drains into another, fountain-style. It just depends on your preference and available space.

Drapery.

A lot of work can go into decorating a large, empty wall space. But if you’d rather avoid the whole process and simply hide the wall, consider adding a drape that covers it from floor to ceiling. This can create a lush and textured look in any room while saving you the time and trouble of planning a complete art installation.

Photo spread.

Although a lot of work can go into laying out a photo wall, there are ways to make it easy on yourself. Start by selecting a variety of photos (some staged, some candid) and print them out in black and white. Then choose frames that are similar, or simply spray paint them to match one another if you like to pick up yard-sale finds.

From there you can purchase templates to pin to the wall (look online or in craft stores) that will act as a guide to hang photos in a variety of patterns. It might not be quite as professional as a spread for a site like HomeQ, but it will definitely become the focal point of the room it is featured in.

A few months ago I posted on my Facebook page that I was looking for clever ways to redo my six-year-old daughter’s room. She loves the ever-so-pink walls that were like this when we moved to our 1986 home two years ago. So I had some great suggestions to use stencils to paint polka dots, and I even had a great company – Cutting Edge Stencils that sent me the perfect stencil kit to create and paint the polka dots.

Well a few weeks ago my daughter tells me she doesn’t like polka dots! Urrggh! Wasn’t too happy, so I had to send the stencil back and think of Plan B. So I remember seeing some beautiful wall decals that I absolutely loved. With her looking over my shoulder at the computer we decided on a dark chocolate brown tree with green and pink flowers. Let me first start off by saying:

Here are a few tips I recommend to you before deciding on a stencil (and where I made a few mistakes!)

1.) Depending on how large or tall your mural is, you will need a second person. While you can do it yourself by holding it in place with blue painters tape (like I did). An extra person will keep your arms and neck from getting tired.. he he.. yes I am a little sore today!

2.) The mural I chose was a 6′-0″ tall tree with flowers, lots and LOTS of flowers. I didn’t realize each and every part of the mural was separate. I think I was envisioning groups of flowers on one backing. No, they were all separate which made the job hours longer than I anticipated.

3.) I recommend cutting the flowers out into smaller clusters, so they are easier to transfer to the wall.  you also will need a credit card, or I used my daughter’s “Brave” card from Subway.. he he…

4.) Luckily, my daughter was out of town with her dad this weekend so I had plenty of time. Next, ensure you understand the directions. The white backing paper and transfer paper totally confused me. I kept getting the stencil to stick to the white backing and not the transfer paper! So I decided to take a picture of how it should look. The stencil should be face down against the transfer paper so you can stick it to the wall.

5.) Also, the tree came in 3 sections, but honestly I had to cut it into smaller pieces because removing the backing (white paper) while keeping the huge tree in place was a feat all by itself. With two people this would have been much easier. You can see in this picture I didn’t have the top half of the tree lined up and so there is a gap between the branches on the left. Thank goodness I have flowers to cover up my error.

Sorry that photo is so dark, this was during my “not happy with myself stage” – I’m so anal!

7.) Once the tree was up it was time to put on the flowers.

8.) 4 hours later, I had finished the project of transforming my daughter’s room with a “simple wall decal mural”.

I have to say that I am VERY pleased with the outcome. I just learned a lot about how to choose wall decals for the next time!

Please let my experience serve as a “DIY Reality” show for you. Factor in time, additional people if necessary and be patient. the end result will come, but don’t start this project when you have anything else planned for the day!

Stencil Ideas

Let’s start with stencils. Most people use them to create a repeating pattern such as a border or a wall-paper look. You, too, can use them in this capacity in your baby’s room to add a contrasting color to the walls. Babies tend to respond strongly to bright colors and contrast as their vision continues to develop (over the course of about 6-8 months after birth), so you could definitely use stencils as a way to engineer a visually appealing space that will engage your child. And you can find all manner of pre-made stencils at craft stores and online, ranging from delicate floral patterns and animal silhouettes to larger designs that are not meant to repeat. However, you may also want to consider that you can use flexible polyethylene plastic sheets to create your own stencils. Many of these sheets are translucent, so you can use a pencil to trace over a graphic you like and then cut it out with an X-ACTO knife, virtually custom designing the wall graphics for your nursery.

Wall Decal Ideas

On the other hand, you could just order wall decals as a way to save yourself some time and effort. You might be surprised by how many options you’ll find when for nursery wall decals, with all kinds of baby-centric themes to choose from. Animals, plants, and modes of transportation are all popular for the nursery, and you can even find specialty items like customizable name plates and measuring sticks that go up the wall. Some decals are even re-stickable so that you can remove and replace them in the event of a misplaced graphic, or should your baby move to a bigger room at some point.

Of course, you can also find eco-friendly options that are better for the health of your baby (and the planet) if that is your desire.
