As Simple as a Shelf

One of the simplest ways to add storage to your home is by adding shelving. Find areas along your walls or even corridors that might be able to handle some shelving, and this will also help to determine the sizing of the shelves and how many you can put up. Keep this idea in mind when storing things in your garage, kitchen and bathrooms. You can store items that are small and minute, like accent figures or decorative pieces all the way to large items like storage bins for the kid’s old sports equipment that is no longer in use. Plus, shelves are great DIY projects just visit your local home improvement store and they can tell you from there.

Create Storage in Obsolete Areas

How about selecting areas in your home that you may take for granted everyday? For instance, take the space underneath your stairs or once again the walls to be areas for storage. The great thing is that the space under your stairs (stair storage) is already there for the taking, just decide on what type of storage area you want it to be? Like a cleaning supplies closet or an extra coat closet, the choice is yours. Or now recessed cabinets are becoming a more popular way of adding more space into your home. With today’s technology, you can pretty much accomplish many DIY home improvement projects yourself, and installing recessed cabinets is one of them.

Use Seating and Floating Islands

Have you ever thought about using your furniture as storage units? Well believe or not it’s true! Think about it, bench seating, storage ottomans, even kitchen islands. All of these items and more are great ways to keep collectibles like books, toys, kitchen utensils and more still in the area yet out of the way. Sometimes we can forget that the things we already have to help the things that we have kept gathering to help contain.

The bed is probably the most useful and necessary piece of furniture in any home. In the same time it is usually the most space consuming piece also. But even in small houses, you can’t easily get around having a bed. So in any home but especially in smaller ones, not using under bed storage is a great waste of available storage space. So much could be neatly tucked away out of sight; winter linens and duvets, covers and throws, but also clothes and other seasonal items. Here are some great ways to use this particular space.

Under Bed Storage Organization Ideas

Invest in a Bed with Built-In Storage

If you are in search of a new bed, think about a bed with a built in lift mechanism. Those are really practical and provide a great storage opportunity. Under there you’ll be able to store a great variety of items of different sizes and they will be safe from dust.

If you are not going to buy a new bed any time soon, ask about separate lift-up mechanism that might fit your existing bed.

Another option if the lift-up is not your choice, is a bed that provides other types of build-in storage opportunities, like drawers.

Use Baskets for under bed storage

With or without lids, baskets that match your overall décor and compliment your bed can be a beautiful addition to your bedroom. The good thing about baskets with lids is that they provide protection from dust. For easier access, use baskets with wheels and make sure to get the correct sized ones, in order to not have ugly gaps or worse, not to be able to store them under your bed.

Re-Purpose Other Storage Items

There are a variety of storage items that are great for under bed storage use. Some of them include old drawers or suitcases. Attaching small wheels to them will make them easy to reach and move around for cleaning. If they are visible, they can give a nice touch to the bedroom.

Storage is one of the most essential things to have for a neat and organized home. Under bed storage should not be easily given up on. Smart ways to use this part will give some storage space to anyone who needs it – and, really, who doesn’t?

Most of the city apartments feature small kitchens, meaning lack of enough storage space. Inadequate cabinet and kitchen storage space creates frustrations, as it does not let you to display your kitchen gadgets and kitchenware that you have accumulated for decades. Move or Donate Unused Items

At first, sort all your kitchen items into the following categories – dishes and glassware, utensils, cooking and baking necessities, foodstuffs, serving items, and miscellaneous. Then, sort out the items that you rarely use and put them in a large box. For example, the turkey roasting pan, which you do not use more than once a year, is probably taking up your valuable kitchen space. Put the tea set also in the same box that you had as a gift but never use actually. After that, decide whether to store them in another place like attic or basement or to donate some items like canned goods or dishes that you do not use. Do not forget to get rid of expired canned goods or foodstuffs that you have not used for last 12 months.

Create Additional Space

Adding open shelves is a good idea for those kitchens that lack storage space but have enough wall space. Though not really suitable for storing plastic or food items, shelving is a nice way to store items like glassware, containers with lids, collectibles, and cookbooks. Attractive lined baskets that fit well on the shelves can be used for keeping those items that are inappropriate for open shelving.

Hang Kitchen Items

Wall-mounted racks or hooks are another good option to store items by using wall space. Use them for hanging tea towels, cookware, and miscellaneous kitchen accessories. Wall mounted spice racks are suitable for holding small containers, spices, and other odds.

Utilize Unused Space

Apart from upper kitchen cabinets, which are generally attached to the ceiling, others have open space above them. You can easily use this extra space for storing purpose. Use this space for keeping those items that you do not use frequently such as rarely used cooking gadgets or holiday items. Store them in lined baskets with lids to protect from dust and dirt and keep these baskets organized above the kitchen cabinets. A pantry can create more space for storing items in the kitchen. A ready-made pantry will be a less costly option than a ready-to-assemble pantry. So, visit a retailer that sells ready-made pantry and buy one according to your requirements at a cheap cost.

Apart from using shelves, wall space, baskets, pantries, and empty spaces, you can also create extra space by reworking your existing cabinetry.
