Declutter your pet supplies

This tip can be applied to any task when organizing. Gather up all your pet supplies in one spot to analyze what you have and what you should no longer keep. For instance, dog owners generally tend to house a lot of toys and accessories, and many of them get despair or don’t get used. So, the first step to organizing is to purge.

Once the process of decluttring is over, it’s time to assess the items that are left behind and organize them. The best way to do so is to sort all the pet supplies into categories for example, toys, food and bowls, grooming supplies, medication, and more. Once done, invest in some household containers made just for pet supplies and store various categories close to the area where you do the corresponding activity with your pet. Dedicating a space or a room to your pet is also a good idea. When all the supplies are in one location, the rest of the house will benefit.

Organize important documents

Immunization, health, and veterinarian records should be kept in a folder much like you would do for any other family member. In case of an emergency, your pet’s information should be easily accessible. Remember that organization does not only mean of materialistic things, it also includes items that will be at arm’s reach when the need arises. Also, make sure to add important dates for your pets onto the family calendar which includes vet appointments, grooming schedules and more.

Pets are a part of our daily life, and so are their supplies. Use these organization tips to keep everything accessible, yet in order at the same time.

Hurricane Katrina, 2005. The tsunami (and resultant nuclear meltdown) in Japan, 2011. The earthquake in Haiti, 2012. All of these natural disasters left behind them a wake of destruction so immense that international aid had to be given and the cleanup and rebuilding efforts are still ongoing. The point is that a natural disaster can strike anywhere, at any time, leaving you without access to electricity, clean drinking water, or medical care. It could even leave you homeless. And your best bet for survival in these instances is to be prepared to care for yourself until sufficient aid can be mobilized and sent to your area. Whether you’re dealing with a scenario that merely leaves you without water and power (but otherwise unharmed) or you have to figure out how to survive when you can’t stay in your home and you’re tending to wounded family members, here are just a few ways to prepare for the possibility of a natural disaster.

1. Drinking water.

This should be your number one concern. Without clean drinking water you will perish within a matter of days (or sooner if you’ve lost blood). For this reason it is important to consider how much water you will need per person, per day, as well as how many days you might need to ration for. Don’t forget that you may want some extra water for pets or for purposes like cooking or cleaning wounds, as well. And keep your supply fresh by replacing stored bottles of water every six months. You might also want to pick up some water purification tablets just in case you can’t access your stored water for some reason.

2. Non-perishable food.

Your second consideration should be food, and in a disaster situation it’s probably best to have plenty of sealed, non-perishable options. Canned food is a good choice, so long as you have a working can opener. But you may also want to consider MREs (meals ready to eat – or military rations). You can find them at your local army/navy supply, in most cases. Just keep in mind that you have to add water to MREs, whereas canned food is often preserved in water or other liquids already. And if you have pets, make sure that you have enough food on hand for them, as well.

3. First-aid kit.

All kinds of injuries and illnesses can occur during and after a natural disaster. While you might not keep an entire triage center in your garage, you should certainly put together a decent first aid kit that includes gauze, bandages, and antiseptic to keep wounds clean and covered, as well as basic medication like aspirin. It couldn’t hurt to have some current antibiotics in there, too. And you might want extras like a sling or tourniquet in case of broken bones. You never know how long you might have to hold out awaiting medical care.

4. Batteries.

Without electricity at your beck and call you’ll find many reasons to need batteries, so stock up on those required for your radio, flashlights, and so on. This will help to ensure access to information and other necessities when you’re without power.

5. Survival kit.

The items listed above might all go into a standard survival kit, but you should also put together an area-specific kit to use in case you are unable to enter your home during a natural disaster (if it is flooded, unstable, or beset by a gas leak, for example). This kit might include camping gear like thermal blankets and a tent, knives and matches, a map of the area, and perhaps even a small camp stove for cooking. And if you live in a colder climate, you may want heat packs or sub-zero sleeping bags. You could also include pet carriers for any animals in your home (chances are they’ll be safest staying confined during disasters). Your home insurance in Florida, California, or Michigan should cover the cost of fixing your home after the fact, but in the meantime you’ll need the survival gear on hand to make it through the ordeal.

When parents and their children work together on a project, they are able to spend valuable time bonding while learning a new skill. Arts and crafts projects are a great way for parents to help their child to create a new item that they can use every day. Learning to create their own household items not only teaches children new skills, but it also helps to build their self-confidence as they discover the new things that they are capable of doing.

The following three projects offer a few simple ways that parents can become involved in an arts and crafts project that will enable their child to create a useful item with their own hands:

T-Shirt Art:

Children love new clothes to wear to show off to their friends and family. Parents love to find ways to reuse old objects so that they can save money. Therefore, creating new shirts is a project that can appeal to both parents and children.

When creating a t-shirt, there are several methods that can be used. First, fabric paint can be used to paint designs or children’s names on the front and back of a shirt. Additionally, t-shirts can be tie-dyed to create a unique pattern. Tie-dying is particularly wonderful for giving older shirts a fresh new look.

Furniture Revamping:

Many people have old furniture that is sitting around in storage units in Arlington, Tulsa, or whatever city you love in. These pieces can often be reclaimed with a fresh coat of paint or a stain. When selecting a piece of furniture for a child to redo, parents should be careful to find one that is simple and in good condition. Shelves or a small table are the best types of furniture for a younger child to decorate.

Once the furniture has been selected, then the parent and child can work together to paint the furniture. Additionally, decorative touches can be added by using stencils or stickers.

Recycled Paper:

Making recycled paper is a great way for parents to teach their children about the importance of reusing materials in order to contribute to a better environment. This project is also hands-on and messy which is something that every child will enjoy.

To make recycled paper, pieces of torn advertisements, magazines and letters will be soaked in a water solution and then strained through a screen. Next, the pulp will need to be pressed and allowed to dry. Recycled paper can be used as stationary or cut to create decorative ornaments.

Arts and crafts projects are a great way for parents and children to work together to create something new from an object that has become old and worn out. By working together with their children, parents can help to build a child’s self-confidence while offering praise for their creativity.

A few months ago I posted on my Facebook page that I was looking for clever ways to redo my six-year-old daughter’s room. She loves the ever-so-pink walls that were like this when we moved to our 1986 home two years ago. So I had some great suggestions to use stencils to paint polka dots, and I even had a great company – Cutting Edge Stencils that sent me the perfect stencil kit to create and paint the polka dots.

Well a few weeks ago my daughter tells me she doesn’t like polka dots! Urrggh! Wasn’t too happy, so I had to send the stencil back and think of Plan B. So I remember seeing some beautiful wall decals that I absolutely loved. With her looking over my shoulder at the computer we decided on a dark chocolate brown tree with green and pink flowers. Let me first start off by saying:

Here are a few tips I recommend to you before deciding on a stencil (and where I made a few mistakes!)

1.) Depending on how large or tall your mural is, you will need a second person. While you can do it yourself by holding it in place with blue painters tape (like I did). An extra person will keep your arms and neck from getting tired.. he he.. yes I am a little sore today!

2.) The mural I chose was a 6′-0″ tall tree with flowers, lots and LOTS of flowers. I didn’t realize each and every part of the mural was separate. I think I was envisioning groups of flowers on one backing. No, they were all separate which made the job hours longer than I anticipated.

3.) I recommend cutting the flowers out into smaller clusters, so they are easier to transfer to the wall.  you also will need a credit card, or I used my daughter’s “Brave” card from Subway.. he he…

4.) Luckily, my daughter was out of town with her dad this weekend so I had plenty of time. Next, ensure you understand the directions. The white backing paper and transfer paper totally confused me. I kept getting the stencil to stick to the white backing and not the transfer paper! So I decided to take a picture of how it should look. The stencil should be face down against the transfer paper so you can stick it to the wall.

5.) Also, the tree came in 3 sections, but honestly I had to cut it into smaller pieces because removing the backing (white paper) while keeping the huge tree in place was a feat all by itself. With two people this would have been much easier. You can see in this picture I didn’t have the top half of the tree lined up and so there is a gap between the branches on the left. Thank goodness I have flowers to cover up my error.

7.) Once the tree was up it was time to put on the flowers.

8.) 4 hours later, I had finished the project of transforming my daughter’s room with a “simple wall decal mural”.

I have to say that I am VERY pleased with the outcome. I just learned a lot about how to choose wall decals for the next time!

Please let my experience serve as a “DIY Reality” show for you. Factor in time, additional people if necessary and be patient. the end result will come, but don’t start this project when you have anything else planned for the day!

Here are eight great tips for creating an art room for budding young Picassos and Da Vincis.

1. Choose your room carefully

Pick a room with a lovely view and you can provide much subject material for your child to work with as they capture the changing seasons of the world outside their window. Artists young and old also thrive when they have good natural light in their room.

2. Provide access to a sink

If your child favours painting then it will be a good idea to choose an art room which has a sink in so that they can wash their brushes in it rather than drip paints all over the corridors of your home.

3. The table

The artist’s table is the centre point of an art room in much the same way that a dining table is the centre of a dining room. Make sure that the table is a height suitable for your child and has no sharp edges which they can accidentally fall against. A decent table should be big enough to accommodate several artists – sometimes a bit of friendly competition can inspire great artistic results. Provide some splash mats to put on the table to prevent it from getting too stained.

4. An artist’s easel

A professional artist’s easel can be a great addition to a young artist’s studio and enjoys the advantage of taking up less space than a table as it folds up. They can also be transported around should an artist wish to take their work outside into the garden. However, easels can be expensive; they normally cost over £100.

5. Floors

Avoid wooden floors as it is difficult to remove paint stains from wooden surfaces. Stain-resistant carpet tiles are an ideal solution for parents who are as proud of their house as they are of their artistic children.

6. Storage space

It can be hard to make great art without making a great deal of mess.  See-through containers are ideal craft storage solutions for those who like to have easy access to their craft essentials. Office trays are also invaluable for dividing different pieces of paper and card.

7. Accessorise

Accessorise your child’s art room and you will provide them with artistic inspiration. Hang up a beautiful painting from a wall or set up a book shelf full of glorious art books which they can reference while their paintings are drying.

8. Exhibition space

Creating fine art can be worthless if there is nowhere to display it. Choose a wall in the room and reserve it for the purpose of exhibiting your child’s art. Pin boards can quickly be filled up with colourful artwork and it is also a sound idea to buy a sheet of blackboard wallpaper to fix to a wall.

Finally, it’s time to buy a ‘Do not disturb’ sign to hang on the outside of the door of the artist’s room. After all, great artists need a little privacy!

We use glass containers because its weight can hold of the materials you intend to fill in.  You may use plastic containers provided you will place something inside like a rock or cement to stand still even when several markers or pencils are placed.

Take on your old ladle to hold your supplies and materials.

This is really an unconventional idea. It is a creative way to display your materials. To do this, screw in the tip of the handle against the wall and carefully bend it to provide a gorgeous curve. You can arrange in straight path or have it done randomly.

1. Formulate a plan and set goals

Cleaning the entire house can be a daunting task, and going in blindly may cause you to become exhausted after only a few hours. Come up with a plan for each room and list down what you’ll need and how much time you’ll be taking overall. Organizing your thoughts first will help you organize your home, in turn.

2. Check your supplies

There’s nothing more annoying than being in the middle of a task only to find that you’re missing an essential component, whether it’s glass cleaner or a new broom. Before doing anything, make sure you’ve got everything you need. If you do find yourself in a situation where you really need a particular cleaning aide and come up empty-handed, look through the internet for alternatives that are already available, like white vinegar or baking soda.

3. Involve your children

An extra set of hands will lessen the burden on you, and also teach them the value of responsibility and cleanliness. Delegate small jobs that can easily be done according to your children’s ages and put them to work.

4. Do not try to take on everything at once

Focus on a single area at a time, and don’t leave that room until you’re sure everything is done in it. It’s more efficient, and saves you valuable time.

5. Declutter, then clean

– Get rid of the garbage and clutter before you start cleaning in-depth. There’s nothing more annoying than being all ready to dust only to find that you need to move a million things from the surface that you want to work on.

6. Organize, organize, organize

A great way of saving yourself the time and frustration of sifting through piles of “keep” and “do not keep” after your cleaning is by using plastic bins or boxes and depositing the items accordingly. Recyclables, donations, or things that you can put up for sale can be organized in this manner.

7. Open the windows

Let the air and sunlight in! After being shut in for months, the most refreshing thing in the world is to have a nice spring breeze inside.

8. Clean from top to bottom

Start from the upper floors and work your way down. Climbing up stairs expends more energy than climbing down them, so let gravity make your job easier. Begin with light fixtures, sweeping off cobwebs, work your way down the walls, then tackle the floors. Your body will thank you later.

9. Try a new look

For spring, switch out your dark, heavy home accessories for light florals and pastels, and take that spring feeling from the outdoors into your home.

10. A daily cleaning schedule, and stick to it

– You don’t want to have done all that cleaning only to have all that grime and dirt accumulate again until the next spring. Deep-clean once, and then set small, daily tasks that will keep your house in order, reducing the need for hardcore cleaning next year.

When we think of disorganization amongst children and teens, we think it is due to a lack of focus, or just plain laziness. What about children with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)? ADHD is a problem with inattentiveness, over-activity, impulsivity,or a combination. Children and teens who have been diagnosed with ADHD will have difficulty organizing themselves, and therefore it will make their environment frustrating and uncomfortable to live in.

Today, I found an article from Family Education – What parents can do to get their children organized. A very interesting article, and one that will help many parents help their children get organized in the home and for school.

Disorganization and lack of time awareness are common characteristics of ADHD. A child or teen with ADHD is likely weak in these skills and will need your help, support, and “coaching” in order to be successful in school. Try not to be critical; instead, keep in mind that this is part of the disorder.

Tips to help your child with organization:

• Provide your child with a backpack and notebook/binder according to teacher’s specifications.
• Provide all necessary supplies for school and homework.

• Label your child’s materials and possessions with her name.
• With your child, choose a place in the home that has adequate lighting, is comfortable for working, and is as free from distractions as possible.
• With your child, carefully examine his work space. Make sure your child has a large, working surface (desktop) free from clutter. If your child has a computer, don’t place it on his desk, which cuts down considerably on his working surface area. Instead, place the computer on a separate desk or table.

• Have your child clear out desk drawers and shelves of work, projects, and papers that were from different school years. Together, decide on what you would like to keep and store out of the way (in colored boxes, or zipper portfolios) in order to make room for current papers and projects.
• Provide a file with color-coded folders in which your child can keep papers stored categorically.
• Keep trays and bins for storing supplies/materials in order to remove some of the clutter from the desktop.
• Keep a three-hole punch and electric pencil sharpener easily accessible.
• Besides a master calendar (in kitchen), provide your child with a desk calendar that serves as an overview of important dates, activities, and events.
• Assist your child with cleaning and organizing by getting her started.
• Provide your child with a cork board and pins to hang up important papers.
• Hang dry erase boards and markers in the kitchen and your child’s room for important notes and messages.

• Make the time to help your child clean and organize his backpack, notebook, desk, and room.
• Provide the necessary supplies to help your child be organized at school. (You will likely have to replace and replenish supplies often.) Have her take inventory of what needs replacement, or ask the teacher.
• Provide the necessary storage space (shelves, closet space, bins, trays, and drawers) for organizing your child’s room efficiently.

• Besides supplies/materials in the room (e.g., on the desk) maintain a homework supply kit.
• Encourage and help your child get in the habit of putting all books, notebooks, signed notes, and other necessary materials inside the backpack before bedtime. Place them in the same spot every night.

I’m currently a cat owner of one, but at the most have had 3 cats and 1 dog at the same time – oh, and have 3 kids.. do they count as pets? Ok, probably not, so 4 animals at once was a hard feat to keep the house organized and clean. Over the years they have come and gone, and Meow Meow, my beloved feline friend is still with me.

As we round up January’s organization month, I thought I’d focus on the pet area. While for some it is not a huge concern, for others it is… or ehh ehh (clearing throat), should be. Today I found a good blog article from Tara’s Pet Sitting site. They explain how to organize your pet supplies, medicines and your home… oh so important!

Tips for your home:

– Choose a convenient location to store and organize all your pet’s supplies.

– Gather up all your pet’s accessories – bowls, leashes, brushes, medicines, toys – and organize them in the newly designated pet area.

– Throw away: rusty leashes, old, rusty or broken cages and crates, toys your pet doesn’t play with, or those that are disgusting (you know which ones these are), and all items left from a deceased pet that you no longer need.

– Throw away treats your pet won’t eat.

Cleaning pet areas:

– Wash all bowls and water dispensers.

– Bathe your pet and clean his collar.

– Check your pet’s sleeping area. Wash beds, or throw away and buy new ones.

– Empty all litter boxes, scrub clean, and refill with fresh litter. Evaluate the location of the litter box. It should be in a very low traffic area, and there should be room to store fresh litter, a scoop and a trash can, so cleanup is easy.

– If you have caged pets such as birds or hamsters, clean cages and evaluate their location. Does the pet get enough attention where it is? If it is active at night, does it disturb anyone’s sleep?

Organization Tips:

– Take your pet to your vet for a regular check-up.

– Organize pet health records of checkups, vaccinations, major illnesses, surgeries, medical tests and treatments, licenses, and prescriptions.

– Keep a complete pet description, picture, license number, names of veterinarians, and other pertinent information. Print out a pet health record for traveling, changing vets, or for your pet sitter!

You can stay organized by doing the following:

Monthly:

– Bathe your pet and clean its sleeping area.

– Completely empty your cat’s litter box and refill with fresh litter.

– Clean your fish tank.

– Administer prescribed prescriptions such as heartworm and flea medication.

Semi and/or Annually:

Schedule Vet check-ups.

Update pet information and registration and licenses.

As we continue through ‘home renewal’ month, I thought about the need to bring your outdoors inside your home, as well as bring your indoors outside. This creates a union between your inside and outside that feels and looks great. Today, we’re going to see how to install interior stone veneer to a wall. Prepping the Wall Surface for Applying Veneer Stone

Locate the wall studs using a stud finder and mark with an “X” on the ceiling. Beginning at the bottom of the wall, staple builder’s felt horizontally, overlapping the felt 2 inches. Use continuous sections of felt across the wall with no vertical seams. Vertical seams can allow water from the mortar to damage the underlying surfaces. Nail metal lath over the felt, with the “cups” of the lath toward you and facing upward toward the ceiling. Secure with roofing nails to the wall studs. Lath will feel rough to the touch, when running your hand downward. The “cups” in the lath are designed to hold the mortar in place and not allow it to slip downward on the wall.

Applying Mortar Scratch Coat for a Stacked Stone Wall

Mix veneer mortar to the consistency of creamy peanut butter and apply to the metal lath with a finishing trowel. Use a downward motion initially to fill the “cups” in the lath with mortar. Continue adding mortar until a thickness of ½ inch spreads evenly over the lath. Use a notched tiling trowel to comb across the mortar while still pliable to create grooves for better adherence of the mortar applied to the stone veneer. The scratch coat of mortar will dry overnight.

Designing the Layout of the Stones

On a flat area, use painter’s tape to outline an area the size and dimensions of the wall being covered with the stone veneer. Lay the stone in this area until you create an attractive arrangement. Leave an area between the stones the width of a finger and stagger the shapes and sizes of the stone. If your prefer the stone already in place, consider Stone Veneer Wall Panels that could save you time.

Installing the Stone Veneer

Mix the mortar to a pudding consistency. Spray the back of each stone and the wall with water. Begin at the bottom of the wall. Apply mortar around the edges of the backside of the stone, leaving an opening in the center. Press the mortared stone against the wall, wiggling it back and forth slightly. Mortar will ooze out on all sides. Do not get mortar on the face of the stone; it will stain. Leave a space the width of a finger between the stones. Use an angle grinder with a diamond wheel to make any necessary cuts to the stones. Continue until all stones are in place.Use a striking tool and a whisk broom to remove excess mortar from between the stones to allow room for the application of grout. Allow the stone veneer wall to dry overnight.

Grouting the Stone Veneer Wall

Fill a grout bag with mortar mixed to a pudding consistency. Squeeze the mortar out the tip of the grout bag into the opening between the stones, beginning with the vertical joints and then the horizontal. Allow the grout to protrude slightly above the stones. Allow the grout to cure one hour and use a striking tool to dress the grout.To give a classic look to the grout, use the striking tool to remove some of the grout, slightly recessing the grout below the level of the stone. For a rustic look, dress the grout level to the face of the stone. Brush the grout joints with a whisk broom to create a natural finish. The wall will cure in 48 hours.
