Turkey is known for its wide variety of street foods and one staple street food that immediately comes to our mind when someone talks about Turkey is The Doner Kebab. Usually made on a vertical rotisserie called a spit, Doner Kebab has become one of the most preferred fast foods in the European countries. Let’s have a look how you can cook it at home using a frying pan.

Doner Kebabs – Traditional Turkey Recipe

Doner Kebabs

[ad#co-1]

Ingredients

2 lbs leg of lamb (boned and cut into slices)

2 lbs ground lamb

1-tablespoon black pepper

2-3 tablespoons salt

1-cup olive oil

3 cups processed onions, until liquid

1 tomato

2-tablespoon butter

1-tablespoon cumin

1-tablespoon pimento

Eat Doner Kebabs in a sandwich or as full meal

Directions

Remove any bits of bones and skin from meat. Cut it into serving slices, approximately ¼-1/2 inches thick. Pound the meat with a tenderizer.

Prepare a marinade by mixing olive oil, onion juice, salt, pepper, and, milk. Pour it over the meat and cover the dish with a plastic wrap. Place it in the refrigerator overnight.

Next day take out the meat from the refrigerator and allow it to come to the room temperature (Approximately 30-45 minutes). Use a knife or a meat cutter to shred it and then fry it in a teflon pan for 3 minutes on one side before flipping to the other side. Consider cooking the meat in olive oil for healthier preparation.

Serve the meat in a Turkish style by taking it off from the frying pan and putting it plane on the plate. You can also serve it on pita bread with a yogurt dressing prepared with bell-pepper flakes, cumin, salt, and, pimento.

Tip: Traditionally, Doner Kebabs were served on a plate with rice, hot sauce, ground paprika, and melted butter.

Overall, Doner kebab is looked at as a comfort food. It can be eaten in a sandwich or as full meal. The choice is yours!

A vintage room can be whimsical and determined by personal style and taste, but it does bring an unmistakable, retro look that is beautiful and rich in culture and history. Vintage decor like furniture and bedding can transform any room into a classic, warm, cosy and welcoming place to live. If you would like to transform your bedroom and make it look vintage, there are some decorative ideas and tips you can use to achieve your goal.

Transform your bedroom with vintage decor

[ad#co-1]

Budget

Decorating rooms is exciting and can be totally absorbing. To avoid getting carried away and going overboard with your decorations, it’s prudent to set a budget for the task beforehand. Are you looking to achieve a contemporary vintage look with modern patterns and vintage accessories or are you looking for an all-out classic, old-fashioned look?

Do you have a certain era you want to base your bedroom decorations, such as decorate your bedroom in a Victorian style or after a 1970’s theme? Consider what exactly you want, your financial capability and make estimates of how much it will cost you to transform your bedroom. Work out an appropriate budget for your complete bedroom makeover and aim to stick to it.

Furniture

Pick your furniture and soft furnishing conscientiously, depending on your chosen theme and the vintage look and feel you aim to achieve. Make sure the furniture you choose are authentic or decorated appropriately. For example, if you are looking to achieve a Victorian look and feel in your room, you can go for a modern bed with a tapestry or velvet canopy or a four poster bed with Victorian style bedding.

Research historical facts about the era you are basing your decorations on to get ideas on furniture design and fabric to use. For example, during the era of Edward VII in England, furniture was predominantly made of dark wood, such as mahogany while in the 1930’s bedrooms tended to always feature decorative vanity sets and rag rugs.

Use the information you discover to obtain the right furniture for your era. If you are not able to obtain authentic furniture from the particular era you want, you could, perhaps, buy contemporary furniture and treat them to a vintage finish that is sympathetic to the norms of the era you want.

Furniture, accessories and lighting details

Image via: Apartment Therapy

Accessories

Your bedroom accessories will play an important part in bringing to life the vintage look you seek. Think old-fashioned when choosing your accessories and keep in mind your chosen decorative theme. Vintage style pillows, crocheted lace, and handmade quilts and comforters can be a good choice for adding a vintage aura to your bedroom.

Classic floral boxes for holding valuable possessions or books and rusty, discoloured or even ripped accessories like vintage photos and frames, feather boas and purses can unify the overall look and feel of your furniture and bedroom design. Antique-looking jewellery, jewellery boxes, accent rugs and hangers can complete the look and add to the beauty, elegance and comfort of your bedroom.

Lighting

The right lighting can enhance the appeal and comfort of any room. Create your desired bedroom ambiance with vintage style table lamps, wall lamps and chandelier. Get specific lighting effects with vintage style lampshades like fringe, lace and pleated shades. Also, use mirrors with exquisite designs to enhance lighting and the overall vintage vibe in your bedroom.

Your front door is the first impression that welcomes your guest at your front entry. It also can add wow factor to a plain faced facade of your home. Front doors can tell a story, by using salvaged doors from other buildings, or they can be painted an eye-catching color to really make a statement about your lovely home. Here are some beautiful front doors I found that all make a loud and clear statement, and they do it with style!

Make a statement!

Image via: Vintage Pretty Pearl

[ad#co-1]

This door is not Barbie’s Dreamhouse pink!

What better way to make a statement than with a nontraditional front door color? This salmon-pink door looks beautiful with the contrast of the neutral toned walls. Especially in the desert-like climate, tones of browns and grays can get boring. Love this pop of color to make guests want to take a peek inside your home.

Pink front door looks striking in this neutral colored exterior

Image via: Cre8tive Compass

Weathered front doors with a story…

I think creative use of shutters, old doors, salvaged materials and other materials around your front door can make a statement too. These weathered wooden shutters make the front entrance look like you are going into a French Country home that you will want to sit in every space and enjoy all the fine details of its decor.

Weathered shutters give this entry a story to tell

Image via: Bhg

Powerful and striking front door

Many homes command your attention from the street. Whether it is because of their size, materials, how they sit on the property, or even how you approach the front of the home. This door is powerful and striking and commands that you respect the home, the moment your feet step foot inside.

I love doors that tell a story before you enter the home

Image via: Cote de Texas

Rembrandt’s Door

This door had a caption under it on Pinterest, “The door of Rembrandt, in Amsterdam… “

Is there anymore to say?

Image via: Anda Blogs

Whether you decide to be bold and daring with your front door, or you choose a more traditional and subtle aesthetic. Make a statement that is personalized for your home and your unique lifestyle. Make a statement!

Entry #869, December 30, 2011

Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve and it is common in the United States to have traditional recipes that are said to welcome good luck into the new year. On New Year’s Day serve these recipes by Southern Living, and enjoy the good luck fortune that surrounds your family dinner.

Look at this Southern Living explanation of this southern American tradition.

New Years Day Recipes to Bring you Good Luck throughout the Year!

Collard greens, and black eyed peas are Southern favorites!

Image via: Southern Living

According to folklore, this auspicious New Year’s Day tradition dates back to the Civil War, when Union troops pillaged the land, leaving behind only black-eyed peas and greens as animal fodder. Rich in nutrients, these were the humble foods that enabled Southerners to survive. Details of stories differ, but each celebrates a communion of family and friends bound by grateful hearts and renewed hope for good things yet to come.

[ad#co-1]

Cornbread

Cornbread, which some say symbolizes gold, completes the Southern New Year’s triad. Native Americans were the first to bake a cornmeal mixture, and Southerners made it daily when wheat was a rarity in the region. For authentic Southern flavor, choose a recipe that uses little, if any, sugar and flour. Don’t forget the cracklings, crispy morsels produced during the rendering of lard.

Cornbread isn’t complete without collard greens and black-eyed peas.

Ingredients

2 to 3 teaspoons bacon drippings or vegetable oil
2 cups buttermilk
1 large egg
1 3/4 cups white cornmeal
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
Butter

Preparation

1. Coat bottom and sides of a 10-inch cast-iron skillet with bacon drippings; heat in a 450° oven for 10 minutes.
2. Whisk together buttermilk and egg. Add cornmeal, stirring well.
3. Stir in baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Pour batter into hot skillet.
4. Bake at 450° for 15 minutes. Serve with butter.
5. Note: This recipe is adapted from Hoppin’ John’s Lowcountry Cooking by John Martin Taylor.
