The Gibson household is a small 2,000 sq. ft 1987 brick home and we’ve been told that the previous owner’s didn’t choose the most efficient thermostat. Although, when you move into a home the last thing we were thinking of was upgrading the thermostat! So… three years later, this was the perfect time to do it. Our last thermostat wasn’t automatic — Eek! It was very inefficient – we would just turn it up and down as we needed, and this in itself wasn’t good for our energy bill.

My gutters, driveway, and dryer vent were all the subjects and were they in dire need of help or what?!

Last week I showed you the Profinder site helps you identify up to 3 professionals in your area based on the projects you choose. I was amazed to see all of the different options for spring maintenance. Here’s how I chose my service professional.

Selecting a HomeAdvisor service professional 

The HomeAdvisor ProFinder is great because it asks you step by step what you need. What is your projects, what repairs are needed, what troubles are you experiencing, etc.. Once you enter your zip code it will start to filter through professionals in your area.

I chose the Zill Service, Corp:

The Window Gang (Zill Service Corp) were awesome! Very professional. They came out to give me an estimate and walked me through each of my projects:

• Cleaning out the gutters
• Pressure washing all of the sidewalks and driveway
• Cleaning out my dryer vent

1. Gutters:

For most homeowners that are trying to obtain a green roof – this is not what they mean! We live in a 30-year old neighborhood with mature trees all around. While it looks beautiful, the trees drop seedlings all season and so our gutters literally grow weeds and mini trees until we clean them out. So this was #1 on the list for us.

2. Sidewalks:

Since our sidewalks are older they have cracks, but worse of all – they are black in many areas due to age and all of the tree debris from around our home. We hope to get all the walkways cleaned to help the walkways and driveways look clean and refreshed.

3. Dryer vent cleaning – 

So as I told you before that they couldn’t find my dryer vent from the exterior. Well bad news, the Window Gang traced my dryer vent  into my attic where it isn’t vented to the outside of my home. Instead it is blowing into our attic! EEK This can start a fire!

I was so happy that they told me. I am now in the process of getting a heating/air conditioning duct professional out to my home to see what can be done.

In the meantime – the Window Gang was still able to dig out all of this lint from the lower part of our dryer vent duct…. EEEWWW!

So needless to say – this home maintenance project could have saved me my home! I’m so glad we got it done. Thanks HomeAdvisor.

So today is the day I show you the before and after pictures of my wood flooring installation. Through this process it was helpful to use the HomeAdvisor Cost Guide:

With my budget of $2500 it looked like I was I going to be right in the average of what most homeowners pay for wood flooring. When choosing a renovation/DIY project ensure you know your budget before you get started! Then use helpful tools like HomeAdvisor’s Cost Guide to figure out if you are in the right range for your budget.

First – Adding an Accent Wall

On the day of installation we had to move all of the furniture out of the room and get ready for the contractor to show up early in the morning. Before we had did this, we decide to paint an accent wall behind the television! I thought this would give the room more color than just the butter yellow walls. So I choose this very neutral greenish gray or “mushroom” color.

So that’s the big reveal! What an awesome experience this has been with HomeAdvisor and especially with our flooring vendor.

I had so many questions when I was first choosing flooring. If I should get hardwood or laminate, what is more durable and many other questions.  I decided to have Frank Milea, the owner of Quality Flooring answer some questions that most homeowners ask when choosing wood flooring.

Commonly Asked Questions:

1.) When choosing hardwood vs. laminate hard flooring, what factors should a homeowner consider first?

• The type of traffic in there home (kids and dogs vs just foot traffic)
• You budget

2.) Are wood floors harder to care for than carpet? Should families with pets and children have wood flooring – why or why not?

No hardwoods are fairly easy to maintain.You can just use a dry cotton pad 90% of the time with periodic use of the bona cleaner.
And yes family’s with pet and children can absolutely have wood floors,its all about what species and texture.. Ideally with children and pets you want a very hard wood.Hickory is preferred.Also,a wood that is scraped or brushed will hide damage that will off course happen..Smooth finishes with a high gloss tend to show much more.

3.) There are so many different types of wood flooring! What do you suggest a homeowner do before making a final decision when considering a wood floor?

Assuming you’ve already chosen your material and gotten multiple quotes.The final decision a consumer needs to make is who he or she will do business with.Here are some questions to ask.

Is my estimate going to be my invoice or are there hidden fees? Is the company I am hiring qualified to do the work needed to install my floors.Is the company I am hiring moisture testing my floor.

Last week I shared with you a great opportunity that I’ve been chosen to pair with HomeAdvisor to showcase how choosing a vendor, pricing out remodeling costs and more can be achieved with their HomeAdvisor network. I chose to get wood flooring installed in my family room and foyer and we are now onto week 2: Choosing and Selecting a Vendor.

Week 2 – Using HomeAdvisor to find a flooring vendor

I will be honest, before deciding to go with the flooring project, I had no idea what type, color, price or even how to choose a vendor or contractor to perform the job. I was glad to see that HomeAdvisor walks you through the entire process so help you find local vendors in your area that are pre-screened and qualified to come give you an estimate.

The only thing I did know was the look I was going for in my finished wood floor!

Finding a Flooring Vendor

I went through the questionnaire online and was able to choose my flooring type, my type of project, my zip code and other pertinent information.

Once you submit your information, the system assesses your information and then will choose up to 4 qualified contractors in your area. 3 were chosen for me, and within 10 minutes of filling out my information, my first contractor was calling me to setup an estimate appointment!

Choosing the right vendor

After I received 3 phone calls for estimates. I chose only 2 vendors to interview, as the third vendor didn’t have an appointment time for another week.  What I did like was the ProFinder guide on the HomeAdvisor website. It enabled you to choose your project and then get helpful tips for interviewing the and choosing the right vendor for your needs.

After meeting with both vendors I chose to go with Quality Flooring by Frank Milea here in Jacksonville, Florida. He suggested I come out to the showroom first to pick out what I liked, and to get a feel for different prices, types, and what would work best with my family’s lifestyle. Then Frank brought the flooring samples to my house and me and my husband chose the sample we liked the best.

We decided on – Natural Prestige – Bordeaux Oak 6-1/4″ for our foyer and family room. We can’t wait for the upcoming weeks! Join me week 3 when we get started with the project.

I have been a fan of Service Magic for awhile, so once I learned they changed their name, revamped the website and offers more helpful ways to help homeowners get home improvement projects done, I was excited to help spread the word! So here’s what I’m doing at my home:

HomeAdvisor asked me to choose a project in my home priced at $2,500 or less and use the online process to choose my contractors, learn how much it costs to perform my job, and learn how to screen contractors once they come to my home to give estimates.

I chose to tackle a wood flooring project at my home!

My 1987 house is a wonderful house to live in, but the carpet in the family room and foyer has got to go! Between having 2 teenagers and a 6 year old daughter, and a cat, let’s just say it’s time for some wood floors. I already have been scoping out beautiful wood floors and I combined my ideas in one area to explain exactly what I like. While I know $2,500 is a great amount, for wood flooring – it will be interesting to see what type I can truly get.

HomeAdvisor helps me find professionals in my area

I started out the process by filling in information regarding:

• What my project was: Flooring
• Type of flooring: Hardwood or Laminate
• What I want done: Estimate and installation. (You could choose from just researching an estimate to repairs as well)
• Helpful wood flooring information along the bottom of the screen helped me understand what types of wood flooring there is, and pros and cons of each.

After I filled out my contact information the system found 3 quality & pre-screened contractors. I received phone calls that day and set up my appointments for estimates… so for the next 4-6 weeks I will show you the process of how my family room gets transformed with wood floors!

The resulting 2,000 square foot workshop/studio at once takes command of the meadow, yet still appears at home in the open space. The north sides of the structure nestle into the redwood and bay laurel trees, allowing good south sun exposure for the majority of the day. Clerestory windows help to brighten the twenty-four foot high central bay that houses the main power tools for the owner’s custom furniture design and production work. The north wing is divided into lumber storage, playing studio and recording equipment room. The south wing was developed into a three car garage with painted auto and motorcycle logos gracing the interior wall.

Video – How to lay a Marble Tile Surround Fireplace

This Old House – How to Tile a Fireplace

A flawless fireplace surround starts with a well-thought-out design and ends with an eye for even spacing. Depending on the tile you use, the design may be as simple as centering the starting position, as with subway tile, or as complicated as spacing decorative tile in the middle of a field, as with accent art tile.

Many art-tile manufacturers will custom-make their tile to match your surround. But regardless of which tile you use, you’ll save a lot of time by making a cardboard template of your surround so that you can lay out a pattern on the floor, space the tiles appropriately, and choose a starting position before committing everything to the fireplace itself.

Start by laying a row of tiles on the template where the top of the firebox would be, beginning with the center tile and working outward from there. Then you can see if you need to adjust the tiles to avoid cutting any slivers at the ends. On the legs of your surround, plan to use full tiles in the field and leave any cuts at the bottom.

Whenever you tile a vertical surface, you have to start from the bottom row and work your way up. For the field above the firebox opening, you’ll need to screw a piece of wood to the bricks to provide support for the heavy tiles while they set. At the bottom of the legs, you’ll have to estimate the size of the last cut tile and rip a piece of wood for a level starting point that keeps the joints lined up from leg to leg.

Keep in mind that tiling requires you to work quickly, and while tile spacers are helpful, it may be necessary to go back before the thinset grabs and slightly cheat the tiles one way or another to make them fit perfectly with their neighbors. As long as your joints look even, it’s more important that you avoid a large grout line at the last tile than worry about sticking to the exact measurement of the spacer.

1. Create a Smooth Surface

Remove the mantel if possible or mask off its edges with painter’s tape where it meets the surround.

2. Install a Temporary Support Ledge

Mark the center of the top of the firebox opening. Using a level, draw a plumb line at the mark that extends from the firebox to the top of the surround. Use this centerline as a starting point to ensure a balanced design.

3. Set the Upper Field Tiles

Mix up a new batch of thinset and additive. Using the flat edge of the trowel, apply a horizontal band of thinset across the center-line above the support ledge. Score the thinset by combing the notched edge of the trowel through it at an angle.

4. Lay the rest of the field

Work your way up the centerline course by course, keeping the joints staggered by alternating the orientation of the tiles at the centerline. Place art tiles according to your pattern. Use spacers between the courses. Let the tiles set overnight.

5. Tile the Legs

Remove the support ledge. Taking into account the height of each tile plus a grout line, estimate the size of the final cut tile that will sit at the bottom of each leg.

6. Set the Cut Tiles

Remove the spacers and the support ledges.

Measure the distance up from the hearth to the bottom of the tiles. Subtract the width of two grout lines. Using a wet-cutting tile saw, trim a tile to this measurement.

7. Grout the Tile

Using a putty knife, clear away any pieces of thinset stuck between the tiles. Place painter’s tape over art tiles that have irregularly shaped surfaces, in preparation for grouting. For more detailed instructions visit This Old House via

Answer from USGBC Green Home Guide:

This EPA indicates that any type of rock could contain naturally occurring radioactive elements, such as radon.

• Some types of granite may contain more of these elements than others.
• The link indicates that there are no generally accepted testing methods for radon in granite counter tops.
• The EPA also discusses the length of time for radon to degrade and the types of home tests available – which may be a good idea for anyone to know, given the potential health risks associated with radon.
