How to Clean Your Upholstered Furniture

A Simple Sudsing Method

Sudsing, which some get confused with soaking- it is not, will help to lift away the stains that may have been more set in. One way to do this trick is to mix some warm water and a tiny bit of clear dish soap in a bucket or large bowl, then take a soft bristle upholstery brush and dint it into the mixture and apply to a small area of the upholstery. Be sure that you are not roughly brushing the area yet lightly stroking the area, then with a damp cloth clean the area. Be sure you check your labeling before doing any sudsing, some fabrics may need it others may just need a quick suction process.

Vacuum Cleaning to do the Trick

Typically vacuums are just used for in taking the crumbs, leftover snakes and minute misc. items that get stuck in between cushions of the furniture within our homes. Take the upholstery tube attachment of the vacuum and like you would as if you are vacuuming the floor, make overlapping strokes on the upholstery from left to right. This will help to clean up the dirt spots that like to cling on to more shaggy fibers in certain upholstery.

Spots on Specific Fabrics

Now if the fabric has more of the linen, polyester-acrylic or even cotton fibers to it then the cleaning process might be a bit different if it has certain messy spots on it. In that case, you want to get some carpet and rug dry cleaner along with pre-mist capture soil release and your vacuum. First use the pre-mist then sprinkle the dry cleaner and rub the cleaner with a dry cloth and then use the vacuum. If the spot remains then you can repeat the process, but be careful that you do not over do-it on the upholstery care.

Bedroom makeover is pretty much going into your advantage than anyone else. It’s where you rest after a busy day’s work. So, anything you do to make your bedroom a pleasurable area is definitely a great idea. Check out this easy DIY makeover idea using a new upholstered bedroom headboard:

Procedure

1. Fabric can do the trick. Start by choosing a fabric design that is pleasing to your eye. Make sure that you have enough of this fabric to cover everything in front and back of the headboard of about 5 inches.

2. Then, Secure the center with a staple but ensure that the top edge of the headboard is properly wrapped. This is roughly about 3 inches from the edge. Perform these steps carefully to avoid misaligned fabric formation.

3. Pull fabric tightly on the opposite sides or edges and staple securely. You can staple all the surrounding edges but make sure that it will not look messy with all the staples. Also, don’t forget to pull the fabric tight before you staple. This will create a snappy and elegant look of the fabric in the headboard.

4. As for the corners, stop your staple at around 3 inches from the corner. The unstapled fabric will be folded at a corner and neatly tuck it in underneath. This will provide the neat finish of your fabric that is covering the headboard.

5. Staple the folded areas on each corner. Keep the folds flat and even.

That’s how quick and easy it is to makeover your bedroom headboard. You can even do this over a weekend or make it a project that takes a few days to complete!

Frame

The true test of quality in a sofa is its frame.  American-made, solid wood frames represent the pinnacle of durability, especially with reinforced joints.  Ask if the base is eight-way-hand-tied, a traditional method used in furniture for over 150 years.  An eight-way system means that individual springs are tied together from eight different directions with tough fibers and supported below by industrial-strength polypropylene strips.  This base is the strongest in the industry, and creates a frame that simply won’t give out.  To finish, look for high-density foam cushions, which may feel a little firm but have the longest life over the years.  A frame like this will easily last over ten years with proper care.

Upholstery

Even the strongest frame will look tired quickly if the cover begins to show wear.  Polyester and other synthetic materials hold up well and come in a broad range of textures to suit every taste and budget.  Upholstery is also where style comes into play.  If you plan to purchase a sofa that will last over ten years, I always recommend choosing a neutral base color.

A neutral fabric, no matter the texture, will look timeless and is easy to update.  Save that bright color, wild pattern, or expensive silk for pillows that you can change with the season or your mood.  It’s also much easier on the budget to swap out pillows than to buy a new sofa!
