The first thing you have to do is to take everything out of the storage room or closet, so you can get a clear look at it and its possibilities. Take detailed measurements of the room, writing down any niches or storage opportunities. Don’t forget about spaces above or behind the door. Take notes about the items you had in there that you will need to put back into the storage room. Look to closet organizers to help you take advantage of all the space you have. While you may think closet organization is hard, visit your local storage or big box store and look at all the possibilities.

Once you have made all measurements, it’s time to make a plan. Make a list of the things you want to store in the room and group similar items together. By having the right measurements, you can optimize the space you have at your disposal, just remember that you might not be able to see the items you have stored in the deepest parts of your shelves. A good idea to not lose sight of things you have stored is to use pull outs or lazy susans.

To optimize even the tiniest closets, make use of practical and clever utensils and furniture. Other than lazy susans, and pull out baskets, clear containers can help also not to lose sight of anything. Furthermore, use carts or boxes on wheels that can be easily pulled out of the way so you can reach even the deepest corners of the room. Pegboards can be great if you have a lot of smaller items you want to be able to quickly grab and use.

After taking these steps to implement these small storage room organization tips, it is sure that you will enjoy more storage space than you would have ever imagined having. But you shouldn’t stop here. Keep an inventory of each shelving contents on a chalkboard, so you can always know what you have and what you need to refill. Also, it is very important to check regular all your stored items, especially if we’re talking about things with expiration dates. Make sure to de-clutter every once in a while, getting rid of any items you haven’t used in a long time and that you probably won’t be using in the future either.

When I tried to organize my drawers, I realized that organization is only as good as the organization tools you have to start with.  For example, in my drawer I had purged all the unneeded, unused tools, but was left with a big drawer and just utensils.  Today on Remodelista they have an article on kitchen organization tools! Wheh hew, right on time.

Tips: Before you run to the kitchen organization store, measure! Carry a small measuring tape with you and measure your drawer space and depth.  Some organizers may be made for deeper drawers, and you won’t be able to close you drawers flush if they are shallow.  Also have an idea of what utensils need to go in what drawers.  I don’t know about you, but when I get in the store, I want everything.  Remember, have a list of measurements, and how many drawers you’re filling!
