Install Pebble Mosaic Tile:

Pebble and stone mosaic tiles can be used in an extensive variety of installations. They are appropriate for both indoor and outdoor application. Commercial applications include flooring, feature walls, bar surfaces, and walkways in projects ranging from restaurants to medical facilities, public parks, and corporate offices. Residential installations include pools and pool decks, patios, landscaping, fountains, water features, kitchen backsplash, flooring, shower floors, bath and powder room floors, entryways, fireplaces and BBQ areas.

DIY Network gives you step by step directions on how to lay pebble mosaic tile.

Tile ideas: Preparation and Application

Installation of these tiles is similar to any other natural stone product for best results, we recommend a qualified tradesperson who is experienced in the laying of natural stone product the tiles are sold in 12 inch by 12inch all tiles interlock on all sides sort tiles before installing to ensure an even color layout for a vertical or contoured surface, smaller pebble sizes should be considered as well as a polymer based adhesive with a short hydration period, i.e.: glue setting time Substrates – Area of application should be flat, clean, dry and free of contaminants. For wet areas the use of reinforced waterproof membranes is suggested. In the case of flooring a fall to the drainage point of no less than two inches in required.

Need some pebble tile inspiration? Take a look at these on Houzz.

Tile Adhesive:

Mosaic tile adhesive – Use only a high quality thinset mortar. The manufacturer’s literature will outline if it is appropriate for indoors or outdoors as well as for floors and walls.
It is important that each pebble is embedded in adhesive, however they should not be pressed deeply into the adhesive. Select a product suitable for application with a ¼” or 1/8” notched trowel and apply no more than three square feet of adhesive at a time.

Sealing and Grouting

It is recommended that the stones be sealed before and after grouting. For the best results use a good quality penetrating sealer. These types of penetrating sealers ordinarily do not change or alter the color of the pebbles. In order to enhance the color of the stones to a deeper matte or glossy finish it is suggested you use natural stone color enhancer or natural stone color and shine enhancer prior to applying the penetrating sealer. A sanded grout that is suitable for external or internal conditions which ever may be the case is recommended. Generally grouts are a water mix but where some flexibility may be needed then a latex additive or similar should be used in the water it is important to wait the interval recommended by the adhesive manufacturer before grouting to minimize dirt ingress between the pebble and avoid the opportunity for dislodging of pebbles grout a small area at a time.when grout has dried, use a stiff bristled brush to scrub excess grout.
After removing most of the grout with a brush use a grout sponge to continue removing grout until the desired finish is achieved.

Pebble Mosaic Tile Control Joints

Joints can be easily formed with two angles, sealant and bond-breaker between them designers may show points at which joints are needed and they are certainly required where tiles join walls or some other building material in the substrate a tile saw may be used to fit edges or corners you can also flip the tile over and cut the desired edge or shape with a sharp cutting instrument OR take individual pebbles off the mesh to fill the gaps ordering extra sheets of tile may be useful for this.

Sealers and Cleaning

It is recommended that the pebbles be sealed with a quality impregnator before grouting and again after the grout has dried completely. To maintain ease of maintenance of natural stone it is recommended that sealants be applied every 2-3 years. Whenever using sealants and cleaners, ensure you follow the manufacturers recommended method of application. The pebbles can be cleaned with neutral mild detergents. The porosity or water absorption in pebbles (natural stone) varies, and therefore staining will occur in different degrees if the stone is unsealed consequently, any spills should be cleaned quickly to lessen the degree of the stain and sealers are highly recommended.

You Tube Video – DIY Corner Shelf

Nowadays, not everyone has the luxury of having wide areas at home. One of the best solutions for limited home areas is to make use of each of your wall corner at home. Here are some tips on having smart corner ideas:

Plan your design

Consider some factors that will suit your design like dimension, materials and purpose. You also have to take into account the furniture design if it blends with your corners. The measurement or dimension is intended for you to assess the accessibility. Of course, make sure that the corner design serves a purpose like bookshelves, storage, or platform for decorative materials.

Look at this bookshelf from a periodical organizer

Project via

Emphasize safety

Clean and clear the area. Remove furniture or things that may cause accident as you do your work. Choose a design or furniture that will not, in any way, block your way or anything that has a sharp edge.

What a great use of a corner and vertical height as well.

Images via

Be resourceful

It doesn’t mean you don’t have to spend money for this project but rather ensure that you make use of the available materials you have in your garage or drawers. If you have a cabinet or box which is empty you can place it in your corners. It’s up to you in what way you can design or position it. What’s important is you will arrange it well

Create more space in your corners by installing simple pipes!

Image via

Add decorative appeal

After arranging the furniture, look for things that are suitable for display. You may opt to display your paintings, picture frames, trophies and plaques. Also, books and magazines can also become perfect decorations.

With this DIY wall corner ideas, there will be no such thing as “small” or “limited” space at home rather “beautiful” and “clever”. Which corner shelf will you try today?

Wooden furniture pieces are an appealing addition to a home’s décor. Many homeowners use stain to enhance the look of their wooden furniture. The following reveals how using colour stain can change the look of wooden furniture in a home.

Choose a stain that is perfect for your project

Image via

Brightening up your decor

First, using colour stain on wood furniture can lighten up to the decor of a room. For instance, picture a living room in a home that has dark carpeting as well as walls painted in a dark colour. This makes the room’s decor solemn and heavy. However, by using a bright, honey-coloured stain on the wooden furniture arrangement in the room, the space receives an instant dose of light. In short, a coat of stain gives the furniture arrangement a warm glow that adds brightness to the decor of the living room.

Renewing the look of old furniture

Next, colour stain has the power to renew the look of older pieces of wooden furniture. Over time, wooden furniture can begin to look worn and dull. Applying a fresh colour of stain to a piece of wooden furniture can help to refresh its appearance. For example, a wooden coffee table with a faded top can take on new life with a coat of cherry stain. Alternatively, a coat of stain in a shade of espresso goes a long way to perk up a set of old wooden bookshelves. Colour stain gives new life to a beloved piece of wooden furniture.

Covering up perfections

Colour stain can also serve the practical purpose of covering-up imperfections on a piece of wooden furniture. For instance, dark-coloured stain can help to disguise gouges on the surface of a piece of wooden furniture. In fact, colour stain can be the perfect solution for an owner who wants to display a piece of furniture without revealing its imperfections.

As many homeowners know, redecorating an entire room can be very expensive. One appealing option is to use a new colour stain on a gathering of wooden furniture. A group of wooden furniture with a fresh coat of colour stain gives a room a whole new look. Furthermore, staining furniture is a relatively inexpensive undertaking. When it comes to furniture stain, there are plenty of colour options to satisfy the creative visions of a homeowner!

The beauty of staining your wood furniture

Image via

Choosing your perfect stain colour

There are many colours of furniture stain that can complement other colours in the décor of a room. For example, when a homeowner puts up new wallpaper featuring red design work, he or she may want to stain the room’s wooden furniture in a shade of red. The red coat of stain on the wooden furniture serves to complement the designs in the wallpaper. Rooms with colours that complement one another have a balanced atmosphere that make them more inviting to family as well as visitors.

Finally, with the help of colour stain, a group of wooden furniture can take on a stylish new appearance. Giving wooden furniture a splash of colour via a coat of stain is a simple, inexpensive way to perk up the décor of any room.

Happy DIY Saturday! This week we are looking at the versatility of shutters and how they can be used to beautify your home. Once upon a time, shutters were only used for covering windows, and as decorative features on the exterior of your home. Today they are being used in re-purposed decor as headboards, and even as beautiful room dividers! The options are endless.

Creative ways to use shutters in your home decor

Image via

Today watch a You Tube video that shows you how to creatively use shutters in your decor. Then my guest blogger will give tips on to creatively use shutters throughout your interior decor. Let me know which idea you decide to try?

[ad#co-1]

You Tube – Creative DIY Projects with Shutters

Guest Blogger – How to Creatively Use Shutters in Home Decor

Yes, we said it – shutters. Not a lot of people think about shutters these days when they’re thinking about interior design. They often think about shutters for practical purposes – sealing off a window from air leaks or helping to prevent the sun from coming in and heating the whole place up. But if you’re a smart interior designer, you know that having shutters does not have to just be a matter of practicality – it can be a matter of good taste as well.

The problem is, so few people think about shutters these days that they don’t really know where to begin. That’s where we come in. We can not only help you with incorporating your shutters into your home’s over-arching motif, but we can tell you why you need to do this right away. Here are three reasons you need to be thinking about shutters right now.

Love these shutters used as headboards!

Image via

1. They’re Practical

If you’ve ever been in a house with shutters, you know that they’re actually a great solution for window shading. They’re easy to adjust, move around, and they definitely accomplish their job of insulation and blocking the sun from coming in. And since not all shutters are alike, it can definitely be said that there are good shutters and bad shutters – they don’t have to look a certain way if you don’t want them to look a certain way.

Add the impact that shutters can have on your home’s energy usage – they help block the sun when you want it to be cool and can help you store heat when you don’t want it leaking out of your windows – and you start to see just how much sense it can make to have shutters on your windows.

2. Get Creative With Your Style

Just like any type of interior design decoration, it’s important to remember in this case that shutters do not come in one distinct shape or size. Essentially, they are customizable. So if you’ve been focusing on a particular type of shutter, it’s important to remember that your options are open. Shutters can be fit to coincide with the rest of your interior design themes and match the color patterns you’ve already selected for your house. Considering how important window trimming can look on a house, it’s good to have an option like shutters available to you.

Create a DIY focal point with shutters

Image via

3. Need an Old Fashioned, yet Stylish Look?

Let’s face it; shutters do have a certain look as compared to shades and other options. And that’s a good thing if you’re looking for an old-fashioned chic look that matches with the rest of your house. After all, mixing modern with old-fashioned can make your home clash in strange ways. If you want a certain look and aren’t sure why shades aren’t working, it may be time to consider getting window shutters. They’re about to make a serious comeback and it’s good to stay ahead of the curve.

Happy DIY Saturday!! If you have been struggling with how to separate and save space in your studio apartment, today’s DIY Saturday is for you. Most studio apartments need visual separation to create privacy, as well as a sense on a home as opposed to a warehouse feel. Today you will see creative ideas to make the most of your small apartment – and these ideas could be used in a dorm, small home too!

Ikea has a number of great items for small apartments. From furniture to accessories, watch this You Tube video showing how to install

You Tube – How to Install a Room Divider – Studio Apartment

How to maximize space in your studio apartment

Studio apartments have a challenge because all of your living needs are easily viewable in one space. In order to maximize space you will need to learn new techniques for saving space. From using multifunctional furniture, to getting creative with utilizing vertical space and under bed storage there are endless ways to create more space.

For these helpful tips for decorating or organizing a studio apartment I turned to Tiny House Blog for tips.

1. Provide enough storage

Try to find furnishings for your apartment that will do double duty. You can even find chairs and ottomans that have storage areas inside of them. Just lift up the top and there you will find space for blankets, pillows or other items.

2. Use dividers for larger apartments

You can find beautiful dividers in both thrift shops and high end furniture stores. Use them to enclose various areas of your space. I saw an episode on HGTV where they used four beautiful wooden dividers to make a separate bedroom. It not only provided a private sleeping area, but also created another wall on which to place furniture.

3. Keep clutter at bay

When you have a small area, clutter is not an option. Too many knick-knacks and too much furniture crowds everything together too much. Keep your necessary items, such as extra bed linens put away in a dresser or wicker baskets. Kitchen counters should be kept clean with everything in the cupboards if possible.

4. Another trick for a small space is to buy furniture with legs and that are higher off of the floor

Your eye will look under these pieces of furniture and add visual space. Furniture that is blocky and low to the ground makes a room appear more crowded.

5. Ensure there is plenty of light in your apartment:

Whether you are painting with lighter colors, using lighter colored furnishings or ensuring natural light pours into your space. Light will make your small studio apartment feel brighter, airy and less claustrophobic.

Creating the Shabby Chic look with a mixture of thrifted and replica pieces

DIY restoration is one of the most cost effective ways to preserve furniture. Many people see it as a chance to use their creativity to personalise a piece whilst saving money at the same time. Although restoring all the pieces yourself can be time consuming, the effort put in is rewarded by a sense of accomplishment.

Create a shabby chic home!

Image via

[ad#co-1]

Before you can start to restore your piece however, you have to find it. This can be difficult if you aren’t restoring a piece you already have at home. Many people prefer to source antique furniture from second hand thrift stores or try and spot a bargain at a car boot sale. Once you have your piece you have to decide on a theme for it, one that is very popular at the moment is the distressed shabby chic look. AlchemyFineLiving have an interesting method on how to achieve this.

Sourcing and restoring furniture yourself can take up a lot of time, especially if you want to do a few pieces, it can take up several weeks. You could pay someone else to do the restoring but I personally think that combining an equal balance of restored and bought furniture can be the ideal solution.

You may think that to get the perfect restored look you have to either restore yourself or pay a large amount for a piece. This is not true as there are a growing number of replica stores that offer affordable prices on furniture with the French furniture and shabby chic look which can accompany your personalised furniture to give a natural flow opposed to a balance in the room.

Create a shabby chic look that you love

Replicas are also an option if you don’t manage to find a piece you would like to restore, although this may come at a higher cost simply finding a replica piece can save further time which may be spend traipsing about yard sales looking for that perfect piece.

Once you have your main pieces of furniture in place it is time to pick the accents. These are the subtle touches that tie the whole room together. Hat boxes are great to give a decorative touch and give you the benefit of hidden storage. Candles are also great but if you decide to use metals, such as gold or silver, look for muted pieces that don’t give off a glare or look garish. Another creative idea is cushions, AlchemyFineLiving also have an interesting method of jazzing up old boring cushions which are on the verge of being thrown out.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match pieces to add to the natural flow of the room, European objects are great for this as they tend to have the right colours and motifs to fit into your shabby chic room.

You Tube – Staging to Sell

Guest Blogger – How to Stage your Luxury Home Property

The sellers of luxury homes often spend thousands of pounds in renovations, painting touch-ups or landscaping in order to get the best returns from a purchase. There is no doubt that if these changes are done effectively the value of a luxury property home will increase. However, staging tips can also be used to assist in the profitable sale of a home, without much added expense or effort. Staging is about presenting a home in the best way possible so that it appeals to potential buyers. It’s not about adding or repairing elements, but simply showing off what your house offers in the best light. Reports show that home staging results in faster and higher value buys than non staged homes. Read these top home staging tips for selling your luxury property.

Home Staging Begins at the Entrance

Home staging is all about making a great impression on visitors, thus the first impression is vital. The first home staging tips for selling a house is to make the entrance inviting. You need to amaze any potential buyers before they even step into the house. Make sure that the entrance is not cluttered with umbrellas, boots or toys and keep. Place an ornamental plant by your front door to make the entrance aesthetically pleasing.

Depersonalize Your Luxury Home

Any home will have a personal touch to it; that is what differentiates a home from a house. However, as much as you love displaying your family holiday photographs and placing your children’s artworks on the fridge door, personal objects will be immensely foreign to a potential buyer and even drive them away. You need to make it easy for the buyer to imagine your home as their home. They need to have the space to picture there life in your home, and personal things will only distract them. Packing away photographs, children’s artwork and personal ornaments is a vital house staging tip.

Remove Clutter

It’s also a great staging tip to remove as many object as possible from surfaces, so that potential buyers can easily imagine their own possessions in the home. A bowel of fruit on the kitchen table or a vase of flowers in the dining room can have a beautiful effect on the eye, however books, magazines, keys, etc should be packed away.

Don’t forget your outdoor home when staging

Image via: 1kindesign

Use Natural Lighting

If your house receives morning light, arrange for potential buyers to view the house in the morning. If afternoon light is best, arrange for the evening. Natural light always give rooms an airy and spacious quality; nobody enjoys dark and stuffy rooms.

These home staging tips are the absolute basics of presenting a home. It is somewhat an art and requires a keen eye for design and space. It may be worth your while to employ the advice of a professional home stager, in order to obtain the best price from a potential buyer.
