As society becomes more filled with technology, one thing’s for sure: people really enjoy their home entertainment set-ups. Despite a downturn in the average person’s finances over the last few years, many popular electrical items are getting cheaper, making it easier than ever to own the system of your dreams. As a result, many people are designing their home around a big-screen TV, a projector and even a video game console. Naturally, technology – however simple – is used to a great degree here, too.

The influence of the new generation of media from the likes of Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft has had a dramatic impact on the way we portray ourselves in the home. While usually it’s just a case of leaving a console, PC or handheld device on display – or games lined up on shelving units – professionals are starting to get in on the craze. Clever designers are now incorporating things that would once be considered a little bit too “geeky” into simple items in the home, which go particularly well in the perfect gaming-centric entertainment room.
One example of this that got picked up on in the press recently was a blind that used outlines of gaming controllers to create some of the most famous images of yesteryear gaming – Pac-Man, the 1-Up mushroom from Super Mario and the inimitable Space Invader have all been created for roller blinds that are made to measure. The most interesting thing was that while tech-savvy websites picked up on this, so did the more traditional interior design resources – clearly, tastes are changing.
Other websites basically pride themselves on offering weird and wonderful options for the average home, whether it’s Manic Miner-inspired mugs that change colour with heat, or even a stackable lighting system based around the unforgettable game Tetris. Combining innovation with old-school gaming, these kinds of things offer two things to their target demographic that really sells their products: classic design and innovation.

There are, of course, other things that people invest in for their home to go with their tech set up, window treatments, mugs and lights. Gaming chairs seem to be as popular as ever, delivering integrated speaker systems and force feedback while offering a comfortable seating for a long-haul night of hardcore console action. Cushions are now reflecting iPhones and design suites, to really pledge your allegiance to a certain brand. You can even get wall vinyls that would go perfectly with the aforementioned blinds – the world really is your oyster when it comes to home customisation.
