Design Style Trends: The Reemergence of American Retro Interiors

As of late, the American Retro design style for homes has recently reappeared as a hot trend and is making its way into everyone’s hearts once again. American Retro refers to a period of time of popular furniture and design from the 50’s,  60’s, and 70’s.  Being that this particular style spans three decades of design, the look and characteristics vary from pastels, flower power, pop music, pop art, and midcentury modern pieces.

Design Style Trend Alert: American Retro

50’s Diner Style

In the 50’s, the Diner Style was a concept of design that was highly used and is still iconic today only now this is considered part of the American Retro Style. Milkshakes, jukeboxes, and diner food were only a few of the memories that come to mind when you see this style emerge in homes and businesses all over. As part of this important area of design is the color palette of bubblegum and neon colors such as cotton candy colors or neon blue that bring this style into view. These colors scream bright and bold! A great way to incorporate this would be to consider furniture pieces that fit into your kitchen or dining room such as dining tables and chairs that exhibit the metal stools from the 50’s diner or plastic white table tops with metal trim.

Pop Art

Pop Art was really popular in the 60’s and brought a bit of pop culture and a reflection of the rock and film culture that was emerging heavily during this time period. Popular pieces of pop art that are commonly seen are the multicolored art pieces by Andy Warhol of Marilyn Monroe or Elvis.  Using Pop Art as a piece of décor in your space is a way to bring the feel of the American Retro Style into your home. If you wanted to bring this into your home in a modern way, you could utilize Pop Art as your artwork and pair with other concepts from this era such as a vibrant paint color for the walls or a colorful piece of modern furniture.

Big Patterns

Big Patterns whether through fabric choices, wallpaper, or rugs are ideal for the American Retro Style. Whether it was a flower power fabric choice for your sofa and pillows or large geometric and psychedelic colors for wallpaper, big patterns are a way to incorporate American Retro Style into your home. Today, there is a wide variety of wallpaper choices on the market that would be perfect for adding to one wall in your space and combining with bright and bold colors to add just the right touch of the retro flair you may be looking for.
