Eco-Friendly Ways to Travel the World

Entry #2378, May 4, 2013

Being green is not just a trend; it’s a choice for many, especially with the world becoming well traveled. More and more people are making efforts to live an environment friendly life and travel is no exception. Making eco-friendly choices during travel is much easier than you may think, and you don’t have to be an environmental expert to make a difference. Here are some basic tips on reducing your carbon footprint while on the road.

Fly Smarter

We know that air travel is perhaps the only way to reach certain destinations, but as a matter of fact, it is considered the highest tourism contributor to global warming.  So, to do your bit, try to book direct flights whenever possible. A significant percentage of plane’s fuel consumption happens during landing and takeoff.

Stay in Green Accommodations

Green accommodations are committed to sustainable development and do their best to help the environment. Some of their activities include, energy efficient lighting, low flow toilets, flow restrictive shower heads, recycling trash, and more. When you stay at these places, you not only get a sense of satisfaction of traveling green, but also enjoy organic bath products, healthy and delicious locally sourced foods, and, free hybrid parking.

Unplug it

When you enter your hotel room, unplug as many appliances as possible as they consume energy even when not in use. Three lamps? Unplug two. Mini fridge? Unplug unless you brought perishables. Similarly, when you head out, be sure to switch off all the lights and fans as approximately 5-10% of energy is consumed by lighting alone. Simple isn’t it?

Shop Locally

Purchase goods from local vendors

No matter where you travel, support the local community. Purchase goods from local vendors. Products that have been flown or shipped from overseas are a waste of energy and resources.  However, don’t buy souvenirs made from endangered animals or plant products.

Public Transportation

To commute within your travel destination, choose public transportation such as a trains and buses instead of car rentals or taxis. If car is a must, rent a hybrid.

Whether you are traveling for work or leisure, being conscious of your impact on the environment can make a difference. And as a bonus, green choice usually yields a less expensive trip.
