For many, the garage becomes a catch-all for items that don’t seem to have a defined space elsewhere in the house. But this method means that things can get disorganized rather quickly. If this sounds too familiar, get a jumpstart on your spring cleaning with these garage organization tips.

Helpful Garage Organization Tips for your Spring Home

Start Fresh:

The first step toward having any organized room is becoming aware of what you’re working with. Pick a nice day and start by clearing all of the clutter out of your garage. From there, give it a good scrub down – sweep the floor, wipe down shelves, bat away the cobwebs. Then, before you put anything back, go through all your items. Be honest about what you’ll continue to use and what can be recycled. Consider a yard sale if you have an abundance of things that aren’t needed anymore.

Go Vertical:

A lack of space is one of the most common obstacles toward organization. Luckily, garages offer some unusual storage options. If the floor gets too crowded, think vertical. Tall shelving units or cabinets are perfect for storing smaller items. However, even larger things can be lifted. Many sporting good stores stock wall-mounted hooks for things like bikes or kayaks. Even if outdoor sports aren’t your thing, you can repurpose the same racks to hold kids toys or lawn care items.

Group Think:

Now that you know how you plan to store things, the next step is to figure out where everything goes. Your best bet is to store like items together, since you may need to use them at the same time. For instance: put all your gardening paraphernalia on one shelf and your sporting gear on another. Household tools are a good fit for a workbench, if you have one. Wherever you put things, once you use a certain item, just be sure to put it back in the same spot where you found it.
