With fall and winter stormy months headed our way; there are a lot of things to prepare for as a homeowner. One item that many homeowners overlook is preparation for a power outage. Power outages can be scary and frustrating. Here are some great tips to prepare your home for a power outage and keep your loved ones safe and secure:

Candles:
It is always wise to have a large set of emergency candles on hand in case of a power outage. Buy a set of candles and a lighter, and store them away in a special cupboard for safe keeping.
Flashlights and extra batteries:
Again, store these items in a special cup board. Be sure to have at least 3 or 4 working flashlights on hand along with plenty of extra batteries – you never know how long the power will be out. What type of batteries do you need? Ensure you have the right kind. Looking for a ups battery? visit www.criticalpowersupplies.co.uk
Food and water:
It may sound silly, as though you are planning for Armageddon, but having an extra storage full of canned goods, dry goods, and water is always wise – especially if you live in an area that gets fall hurricanes or strong snow storms. You would not want your family to go hungry because a store is inaccessible or the oven is not working.
Generator:
A generator can be a costly investment, but if you feel that your home is susceptible to long-standing power outages, it may be wise to purchase one. These can be purchased at most hardware stores – don’t forget the gas to run the generator.

Weather radio:
A hand-cranking weather radio is a must-have to keep you in touch with the outside world, its happenings, and the status of the storm. These can be purchased for around twenty dollars at most hardware stores, and are a wise investment.
Blankets:
Store some towels, blankets, and pillows in your emergency cupboard as well. This will ensure you are not running around your home in the dark trying to collect pillows and blankets for all your housemates.
Storms and power outages can be scary, but with the proper preparation, you can keep your family safe and sound.
