This is the time of year when holiday fireplace mantles probably get more attention than ever; especially if the mantle belongs to a house that has children in it. After all, it’s the fireplace that is Santa’s route into the house and it’s the stockings that carry so many little surprises to be revealed on Christmas Day.
Yet whether you have kids or not, if you plan on doing any form of entertaining over the holiday season, it’s definitely a good idea to brighten up the mantle space by doing a bit of festive decorating because near the fireplace is oftentimes where people sip wine, laugh and talk—where they enjoy time with one another. For that reason, mantles tend to be the centerpiece of the room.

So, what are some decorating tips that you can use for your own mantle this year? We have five that we think that you’ll really like:
Be simple.
Sometimes, less is more, right? One of the really natural and easy décor ideas that you can apply is to get some evergreen branches, some green apples and pears, along with a few pine cones and arrange them nicely across your mantle. Not only is it a “simple kind of beauty”, but it brings forth a sweet and subtle scent of the holiday season.
White it out.
Whether you live in a city where you are almost certain to have a White Christmas or a place that is a bit more tropic, you can still put people into the mindset of a winter wonderland (especially if your mantle is already white) by purchasing white winter-themed decorations such as Styrofoam balls, white candles, white pictures frames, vases and holiday figurines.
Hang pretty ornaments.
If you want to go without a big Christmas tree this year, why not compromise by purchasing a miniature Christmas tree to go on top of your mantle? (Just make sure that if you are going to use little lights that you have an additional outlet as to avoid electric fires.) Or, you can go without the tree altogether by purchasing some clear vases and putting a variety of different Christmas ornaments inside of it. You can even wrap tiny little boxes up with bows to complement the ornaments.

Try some red and green.
Two traditional colors that are associated with the holiday season are red and green. With that palate, you can take on more of an eco-friendly approach by putting mini-Poinsettias, tulips and roses in small vases or clear bowls on your mantle along with some berry branches and little green mums.
Be traditional.
If you have children in your home, you definitely can’t go wrong by having a traditional mantle complete with a wreath, some garland and stockings. As a matter of fact, incorporate your children into the decorating process by letting them pick the kind of stocking they would like. You can add to the magic by displaying their letters to Santa in frames on the mantle as well, along with some cookies and milk on Christmas Eve. It’s a special and sentimental way to make the fireplace a part of the entire Saint Nick experience. Happy Holidays!
