With an average of a third of our lives being taken up with sleep, it’s safe to say that most of us spend a great deal of time in our bedrooms. With this is mind, it’s worthwhile to ensure that we’re making the best possible use of the space, to create a spacious and relaxing environment conducive to a good night’s sleep.

How is your room laid out?
Optimising your bedroom space can be a relatively simple affair. The key is simply to take a good look at the room and how it’s laid out, and to ask yourself whether you could be making better use of the space. For example, take a look at how your bed is positioned. If you feel that your bedroom is too small, try turning it around, or pushing it against a wall. This can help to give the impression of more floor space and really open up the room. You might also consider whether your bed might be too big for the room. Swapping a king size for a queen size or a regular double could make for a better fit.
To create more storage space without creating more clutter, look out for beds with built-in storage compartments. These are an increasingly popular fixture, as they can replace a bookcase or chest of drawers as a storage space for clothes or books, but they don’t take up any extra space and are easy to conceal.
Assess how much space you really need
It can be tempting to pack too many of your possessions in your bedroom, but ask yourself how much you really need to store there. If you have a spare room, consider transferring some of your things in there. Little-used items could even be stored in an attic or basement. Even your wardrobe could go in a spare room if it’s close enough to your bedroom to be convenient. Try it out – you can always put things back later if you find that the extra space isn’t worth it.
Even something as simple as repainting or wallpapering your room can make a huge difference. Lighter colours can really open up the room, whereas darker colours can make your room feel a little depressing and cramped. A few small changes really can make all the difference.
