Guest Blogger: How to Decorate Your Bedroom for the Holiday Season

Guest Blogger #278, Entry #806, December 1, 2011

Now that the holidays are here, it can be fun to decorate the house with lights, wreaths, and all the trappings of the season.  You might even pull out special table settings for family get-togethers (seasonal tablecloths, place settings, and centerpieces, for example).  And you’ll almost certainly want to set up the hallmarks of your particular festival, be it a Christmas tree, a Hanukkah menorah, or the green, black, and red decorations of Kwanzaa.  But these are the items you use to deck the halls of the common areas in your home.  You don’t necessarily want them in your bedroom.  So if you’d like to carry the spirit of the season into your most personal space, here are just a few tips to bring the feeling of the holidays into the bedroom.

Pull out the holiday quilt

Even if you don’t happen to have a quilt in the colors of the season, pulling out the warm and comfy winter coverlet will turn your sleeping chamber into a cozy reminder that even though the weather outside is frightful, it’s delightfully warm under the covers.  So get ready to hibernate by taking out the one special quilt that makes you feel safe and surrounded by all the love of the season.

Add festive throws and pillows

You might not want to go all out by filling your bedroom with holiday décor, but a few touches here and there can really give the feeling of the season without making your boudoir feel like the center aisle of your local pharmacy (you know, the one that’s stuffed with decorations three months before the actual holiday).  You can probably pick up a few festive throw blankets or holiday pillows at any number of home stores, but if you really want to make your space special and personal, consider creating your own pieces with holiday fabrics or a cross-stitching kit.

Deck the walls

If you’re not into the cute and comfy décor that will turn your bedroom into a winter wonderland, why not find some decorative wall art instead?  You can hang wreaths, strings of colorful beads, or even a Norman Rockwell print to transform your space a bit more subtly than by adding holiday bedding.

Use scented candles

There are ways for you to tantalize all of your senses with the hallmarks of the holiday season, so think for a moment about the scents that you associate with your particular holiday.  For some it’s the smell of a pine tree, while others can’t help but think of baked goods, apple cider, and hot cocoa.  Incredibly, you can find all of these singular scents in candles so that your bedroom is full of the smells of the season (and a little mood lighting for those long winter nights).

Beef up your media collection

Is there anything better than popping in your favorite holiday movie and snuggling up under the covers with the one you love?  With comfortable bedding (as opposed to, say, bed bug mattress covers), a cup of hot cocoa, and the holiday classics that put you in the holiday spirit, your bedroom can easily become a seasonal sanctuary.  So sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite, and ride out the cold weather with a warm and relaxing holiday room that is just for you.
