Inexpensive Tips to Upgrade Your Outdoor Living Space

Guest Blogger #574, Entry #1312, June18, 2012

With the official start of summer just two days away, you may be scrambling to breathe new life into your deck, patio, or yard. Contrary to what you might think, you don’t need to go out and spend lots of money purchasing all new furniture for a different look. The below tips are relatively inexpensive ways to upgrade your deck or patio:

Brainstorm:

The first step to sprucing up or re-doing your outdoor living area is to think about what you’ll utilize it most for – hosting dinner parties, lounging with a book, or having friends over for cocktails? Perhaps you want to create a space that gives you the flexibility to do all three of the above options.

Evaluate:

Take a look at your current furniture, cushions, rugs, etc. Giving old furniture or wood a new coat of paint, or purchasing some colorful cushions can breathe new life into your outdoor space. Re-arrange furniture to create separate areas for dining and lounging, using rugs, color combinations, etc. to differentiate the areas. Purchase furniture covers to keep your things in tip-top shape when not being used.

Landscape:

Adding flower boxes, potted plants, or hanging plants can bring nature right to your deck or patio. Flowers and plants provide beauty and color, and large potted plants can even provide some natural shade. If you have a grill, just make sure to not place plants around or in the way of the person manning the grill.

Illuminate:

If your patio or deck gets a lot of sun, chances are, you won’t be spending much time out there until nighttime, when it cools off a bit. Hang strings of lights to create a soft, fun outdoor style. And to keep pesky mosquitos away, purchase citronella candles or torches.

Every yard or patio is unique, but by adding in a few of these elements, you’ll create a space so enjoyable, you’ll never want to be indoors. For more information, contact Decorating Den Reno at 775-832-8012.
