Guest Blogger: Simple Tips to Redesign your Kitchen

Guest Blogger #550, Entry #1252, June 5, 2012

Kitchens are possibly the most important part of any home, as they play host to more activity than any other room. Individuals and families all spend extensive amounts of time in kitchens

As the pride and joy of many a homeowner, it is particularly important that kitchens are fit for purpose. This can mean that the time may come when the homeowner decides it is time for a new look. Fortunately this can be achieved without any major upheaval, and although it is still a major job it can be very rewarding to implement new kitchen designs that can give your home a feel more to your tastes.

Plan ahead for the new kitchen

Before tearing down the existing kitchen, it is important to plan ahead for your new kitchen, with a number of factors contributing to the new design. It is possible to get professional help with kitchen designs, who will help design something to really suit your requirements within your budget. Other trades can help with specific jobs that may need doing.

One of the most important considerations is the size of the kitchen, and how much space is available. Something that cannot be overlooked is that kitchen designs have to incorporate the water supply and electrical outlets. These will partially dictate where kitchen appliances are placed, but it could potentially create new and useful workstations.

Consider how much space you have

It is also important to consider who is going to be using the kitchen. If it is not going to be solely used for cooking then it might be worth including a centre island, for example, to provide an area for socialising or, for families, a place for children to do homework. It is worth considering that if you end up selling the house further down the line an all-encompassing kitchen is likely to suit a wider range of potential buyers.

The redesign of a kitchen is a chance for a fresh start, so that can mean an entirely new look in terms of floors, colours, walls and layout.

Plan for what your kitchen will become

Make your kitchen appear larger

One popular trick when it comes to kitchen designs is to make the room appear larger than it is. This can be done in many ways. If the kitchen is going to be tiled, then larger tiles can create the illusion of space, as can vertical lines.

Clutter can make a space seem smaller, so it is important to plan clutter free surfaces. Taller wardrobes and cupboards can be chosen over wider ones to leave more open space, with more storage spaces underneath counters.

Many parts of kitchens, such as cupboards and wardrobes, can be purchased as flat pack furniture. This is where furniture comes in separate parts designed for easy assembly.

Flat pack kitchens can provide notable cost benefits to customers, who pay less because of the increased space efficiency they provide. These lower costs are passed down from the manufacturers, who save money in shipping and storage costs.

This can be particularly useful as redesigning a kitchen can be a costly affair. However once complete the reward for a homeowner is seeing their design become a reality, and the admiration of any visitors.
