Simple Tips to Renovate Your Deck this Summer

Guest Blogger #539, Entry #1215, May 23, 2012

A patio or deck can be a great way to enjoy the outdoors during the summer months. While it may seem difficult to renovate an old deck, there are many deck plans that can be affordable, beautiful and easy to install. The following guide provides simple tips and tricks for renovating a deck this summer:

Make Plans

When renovating a deck, it’s important to have a solid idea of what one plans to do. There are many computer-aided design (CAD) programs that can help a homeowner create a vision for a future deck. While some of these tools can be complicated to use, programmers and developers have worked hard to make them accessible to everyone. In many cases, it’s possible to digitally create a deck and superimpose it on a photo of one’s home. This can be a great way to make sure that a deck will blend with the ambiance of a home.

Choose Materials Wisely

It’s also important to make sure one chooses a durable material when building a deck. While pressure treated wood is commonly used when building outdoor decks, some people prefer to use a polymer material. A polymer decking material can offer better durability than a wood deck. However, it is usually more expensive than wood.

It’s also possible to build parts of a deck out of stainless steel and iron. For example, many homeowners have a set of stairs leading from a backyard to a deck. In most cases, homeowners build these stairs out of wood. While this can be an affordable choice for many homeowners, it can be a slipping hazard when wet. In addition, mold and mildew growth can also create a significant slipping hazard.

There are special iron gratings that can be used when building stairs. In addition to proper drainage, these iron gratings can help reduce the risk of falls. This can be an excellent choice when building an elevated set of stairs for a home or outdoor patio.

Consider deck amenities

It’s also important to make sure one has proper lighting for an outdoor deck. While it’s nice to enjoy a deck during the daylight hours, many homeowners enjoy having a meal on at outside porch or deck. Proper ambient lighting can enhance the appearance of a deck and home.

In some cases, homeowners may also choose to install an outdoor sound system. A waterproof sound system can be a great way to enjoy music when spending time outdoors.

When it comes to summer weather, there is hardly anything more enjoyable than grilling out and relaxing on your deck.  So don’t continue to put the building of your deck off.  Instead, call up a few close friends, get those plans together, and start building so that you too can enjoy a few lazy summer days on your own back porch.
