Home Staging: Making your Home Appear Larger

Most of us are almost always fretting about the lack of space in our homes. But fortunately, even though you cannot increase the square foot area, you can always trick the eye into perceiving a larger space. Here are three interesting home staging ideas that can help make your home appear larger and spacious on a budget:

Home Staging: Making your Home Appear Larger

1. Improve the lighting –

The light in your house can play a crucial role in making it appear larger and more spacious. Never block any natural sources of light like windows and doors. A dark and dingy room will always feel smaller than its actual size. Overhead lighting casts dark shadows in the room. Balance the overhead light with wall scones. Use light colors to paint the walls in room with very little natural light. This will make the room appear brighter.

 2. Add mirrors

Once you have the lighting in place, it is time to multiply the effect by simply placing mirrors at strategic points. Place the mirrors such that they reflect the light source. Also, use mirrors to add depth to the room. The reflective surface of the mirror will give an illusion of a more spacious room. The mirrors should be used to reflect windows, light sources and other focal points in the room. Choose a mirror frame that compliments the decor of the room. You can also hang a collection of small mirrors on a blank wall to multiply the effect of light falling on them

 3. Make use of straight, clean lines

Another great idea is to employ clean, straight lines into fooling the eye to believe that the room is larger than it actually is. Use vertical lines to add height to the room. You can hang drapes or hang a wallpaper with vertical lines. To increase the length and the width of the room, use carpets and area rugs with straight lines. If you have a long narrow room, use an area rug that has lines running width wise. Similarly, if you have wooden flooring, the floor boards should be installed such that they create vertical or horizontal lines depending on the size of the room.

It is important to remember that these tricks will be most effective in a clutter-free home. So before you head out to buy those mirrors, spend some time in clearing out the mess.
