In all the organizing and cleaning of the house, the garage is often forgotten. But especially if the garage is also used as storage, there is always need to for keeping it practical and useful. Here are a few tips on how to do that. If you’re looking for helpful garage organization tips, here are some great ones to get started with this New Year.

Garage Organization: Tips to Start off the New Year

[ad#co-1]

Figure out how much space you have

The first step is to find out how much space you really have for storing. Do to that, make an layout of your garage and determine on the space that is available. A good trick is to park your car in it as you normally do, and open all your car’s doors. No make an outline of your car with opened doors, using tape or chalk. Leave some extra space when you make the outline. Close the doors and remove your car. Now you will know exactly how much space you have to use as storage.

Decide on what you need to store in the garage

Knowing how much space you have, try to decide which things need to be in the garage. Doing that, you will automatically make decisions about what to keep in your house. Try to keep only the truly necessary stuff and decide what you will sell, donate or toss.

Ask yourself how to divide your available space

Divide your stuff into categories. Choose for each category an area where you will be storing it. This way you will always know where to look when you want to clean your car or to find seasonal items. Remember to keep stuff you need often in an area that you can reach easy. Items that come out only one or two times a year, like Christmas decorations, you can keep in a more remote or higher place. Also, don’t forget that large, heavy items should be stored at the bottom.

Best ways for organizing storage

Use shelving, bins and boxes

Shelving is the best friend for anyone that wants to store stuff. You can choose between open shelving, closets or combine these two. You can re-use old cupboards or shelves. Get some bins, boxes and buckets to put your smaller stuff in them.

Categorize and Label

You can either categorize by use or by items. So you can store all your rags at one place, or put the rags used for car cleaning with your other car cleaning materials.

Labeling all your storing items is essential to find your stuff but to also knowing in a second where something belongs to.

Use your walls and ceiling

Walls can be made available for a great amount of storage. Use pegboards, hooks and wire racks to store everything, from bicycles and shovels to tools and pots.

There are great options available to use the higher parts of your garage for storing. If you need that space, it is worth having a look at those options. Also, hooks to hang your bicycles or other items are a great option.

If you spent this past winter begrudgingly cleaning off a snowy car because there wasn’t enough room to store it in the garage, you are not alone. For many, the garage becomes a catch-all for items that don’t seem to have a defined space elsewhere in the house. But this method means that things can get disorganized rather quickly. If this sounds too familiar, get a jumpstart on your spring cleaning with these garage organization tips.

Helpful Garage Organization Tips for your Spring Home

Start Fresh:

The first step toward having any organized room is becoming aware of what you’re working with. Pick a nice day and start by clearing all of the clutter out of your garage. From there, give it a good scrub down – sweep the floor, wipe down shelves, bat away the cobwebs. Then, before you put anything back, go through all your items. Be honest about what you’ll continue to use and what can be recycled. Consider a yard sale if you have an abundance of things that aren’t needed anymore.

Vertical garage organization

Image Via: BHG

[ad#co-1]

Go Vertical:

A lack of space is one of the most common obstacles toward organization. Luckily, garages offer some unusual storage options. If the floor gets too crowded, think vertical. Tall shelving units or cabinets are perfect for storing smaller items. However, even larger things can be lifted. Many sporting good stores stock wall-mounted hooks for things like bikes or kayaks. Even if outdoor sports aren’t your thing, you can repurpose the same racks to hold kids toys or lawn care items.

Group Think:

Now that you know how you plan to store things, the next step is to figure out where everything goes. Your best bet is to store like items together, since you may need to use them at the same time. For instance: put all your gardening paraphernalia on one shelf and your sporting gear on another. Household tools are a good fit for a workbench, if you have one. Wherever you put things, once you use a certain item, just be sure to put it back in the same spot where you found it.

Even unusual crates can help with garage organization

Image Via: Pinterest

Love Labels:

The A-types among us will love hearing that a organizing the garage is the perfect occasion to break out the label maker. With lots of little odds and ends lying around – think nails, bolts, and air pump adaptors – that you’ll want to keep track of. Take the time to give everything a label, so that you’ll be able find everything at a moment’s notice.

Labels are a great way to keep a garage organized

Image via: Pinterest

Since it’s such a hodgepodge of items, a garage is often one of hardest places to keep spic and span. But with the help of these organization tips, you can keep things tidy all year long.

Simple Steps to Paint your Garage Floor

Painting your garage floor is a must. It provides extra beauty and safety. When you paint your garage floor, you will be able to highlight your lawn area and the driveway. This is one of the main reasons why you need to paint the garage floor regularly.

There are a number of colors that you can choose for your garage floor. But picking the right color isn’t the main task. It’s the painting process that will definitely take much of your time and effort. However, painting your garage floor is a do-it-yourself project. You can schedule it during weekends or holidays. To help you with the process, here’s how to paint a garage floor:

Don’t forget to use the right tools and equipment for this painting job. It will help you become more efficient and get the job done as desired.

Painted garage floor ideas

Image via: Jay Brousseau

1. Ensure proper ventilation in the work area

This is the first thing that should be considered before anything else. It’s for your safety. Paint manufacturers are doing their best to ensure safety when inhaled. But it’s better safe than sorry. As a safety precaution, proper ventilation should be observed.

2. Clean and clear the floor area

You have to remove everything that blocks your way. It will allow you to move freely. Also, cleaning the concrete floor will ensure that the paint will stick directly to the concrete. You can spray water and let it dry before doing the next step.

3. Repair the cracks

Repairing cracks are crucial in the process. You have to conceal it and make sure that all cracks are covered. The crack will affect the outcome of your painting project if not properly repaired.

4. Etch the surface

Just like any other painting job, you have to etch the surface. This is to flatten the surface and will make your painting look smooth and silky. Etching the surface will also remove dirt and dust that will affect the paint outcome.

Stained concrete floor in a converted garage renovation

Image via: Elemental Design

5. Apply the Primer

Before you brush the first coat, apply the primer. It’s one of those steps that should not be skipped. Applying the primer on the surface is making sure that your paint will hold on for as long period of time.

6. Brush first coating and then the next

The first coat will at least cover the majority of the surface. The result of the first coat isn’t always enough to please your eyes. This is because part of the first coating will be absorbed by the concrete. Then, apply the next coat.

Last week you enjoyed Liah AIAmin’s – ‘A Fresh Take on your Easter Home’ and this week I bring you Madeline Jones a member of the Facebook Olioboard Fan Room. See how she helps you organize your spring garage and have room for all the great activities you and your family have in store this season.

‘Spring Cleaning Your Garage this Season’ – Madeline Jones

Although the garage is a great place to store everyday items and seasonal items, it can sometimes turn into a collection of odds and ends that turn into clutter.

In prepping the garage for spring cleaning and organizing, start by getting rid of things that are no longer needed or used. If you haven’t used something in more than a year, consider letting it go.

[ad#co-1]

Garage organization ideas:

1. Inexpensive shelving can be purchased from places like IKEA or built in cabinets and shelving can be installed.

2. Anything that is unsightly can be placed on shelves inside cabinets. Less frequently used things such as holiday decorations can also go in a cabinet.

3. Daily necessities as well as the recycling bin should go on shelving closest to the door to the house or on shelving that does not have any doors for easier access.

4. Containers make everything look so much neater and less cluttered. Decorative types of boxes can be used, which look nice. When storing heavier items, containers with lockable sides and sturdy handles might be more secure. They are easy to take off the shelves and put back too. Do not forget to label the containers or use clear containers so that the items inside can be seen!

5. A shoe tray near the door can be especially handy when removing wet or muddy shoes. If room next to the door is minimal, shoes can also be stored on open shelving.

6. All chemicals and sprays can remain inside a cabinet in order to avoid spillage. Just make sure that there is some ventilation if they are placed in a cabinet.

7. Store sport equipment on a cart. Larger sticks like hockey or lacrosse sticks might need a larger area.

8. Large hooks that screw into the ceiling can be used to store bicycles and that also gets them off the floor and saves space.

Even if you cannot spend a lot of money, tucking things into their own zones and finding a “home” for items will free up space. Any amount of organization will make it easier and less time consuming to find and put away items.

<nbsp>

It’s no surprise when people are doing spring home improvements to welcome in the new season. The motivation to make some home renovations is oftentimes a result to adapt to the climate. But of course, these modifications can maintain the sturdiness and provide a refreshing look at your home.

Your home exterior is the one the people see on a regular basis. Oftentimes, your home is criticized by what they see in your exterior. This is why your home exterior should be on top priority for modification especially this spring season. Here are some great ideas on adding spring touches to your exterior home:

Add spring touches to your outdoor home

Images via: Siemasko + Verbridge

[ad#co-1]

Take some time to plan for your spring home exterior design. Make it look like an extension of your character or personality.

Get your garage updated

Your garage is obviously making the scenery on your exterior. This is an area of your home wherein renovations are easily noticed by people outside. You can have it repainted to give a brand new look in an instant. Also, you can change the materials used on your roof. This will be a noticeable change to your exterior.

Customize decorative items

This is something that will capture their attention. It’s a decorative fill in a plain view. For instance, if you have a plain and wide wall, you can add a parapet or a molding to enhance its look. You can also hang on customized planters of lighting fixtures to make it look lively and interesting.

Exterior home spring touches

Image via: Domain Design Architects

Broaden your entrance

One of the best ways to make your home exterior look elegant is to enlarge your entrance. As you see it in luxurious hotels or mansions, entrance door is commonly wide and huge. This will provide a decent illusion of the majestic view from the outside. A nice two door opening is something that you might want to consider.

Entry #2029, January 21, 2012

Back in June of 2009 when I first started Stagetecture my main goal was to make my home staging business into a resource that would help busy homeowners stage their homes with my inspiration or hire me to take the work off of their shoulders! Home staging has been a love of mind while being an Associate Architect, and hence my company name was born – STAGE – TECTURE

Oliohop – January 2013

[ad#co-1]

So I was ecstatic when I was asked by Olioboard to join their January #Oliohop along with 9 other bloggers to showcase our ideas for January’s theme:

Staging a Home for Sale : Before & After

Throughout the months I have showed you how Olioboard has helped you ‘Get the Look‘ on Stagetecture, and our newest feature ‘Olioboard Inspiration‘ showcases home inspiration ideas for you home, using this incredible 2D or 3D tool.

If you are new to Olioboard their tagline: “Design a Room and try it before you buy it! Create 2D & 3D rooms that you can save, shop & share.” You can create inspiration boards to help you visualize your interiors, present ideas to your contractor/client or just enjoy perusing through thousands of sets for your enjoyment. I encourage you to join the Olioboard community on Facebook, Twitter, and see helpful tutorials on their You Tube Channel. I used those tutorials and they helped me with my home staging boards I have created below.

Home Staging – The Man Cave

In my year’s of home staging, the most difficult rooms to sell to a potential home buyer are the rooms that a homeowner has personalized ‘too much’. Sure, it’s fine to showcase your favorite colors, hobbies, and interests in your home. Although, the moment you decide to put your home up for sale – it now becomes the potential for a home buyer to envision themselves living in your home.

Stagetecture has a HUGE man cave following So I found it only fitting to feature a before and after man cave for home staging. To show how a overly personalized room can be changed into a family friendly room that could be appealing to potential home buyers, but still has masculine touches to keep the homeowner feeling like they have a place to still relax and enjoy, until their home sells!

BEFORE: Man Cave Mania

Home Staging challenges:

Man cave is too personalized. Sports paraphernalia overload and darker colors create a “cave-like” feeling indeed! Home buyers who are not sports fans and are not wanting this overly personalized space will be instantly turned away.

Overly cluttered with furniture, dark colors creates an unwelcoming room. Dark burgundy wall covering makes the entire space feel like you’re in a movie theater rather than a person’s home.

Mixture of eclectic styles, and too many displayed collections are a sure fire way to turn a home buyer off!

AFTER: Welcoming Media Room

Home Staging fixes:

Instead of removing all signs of personalization, the man cave has been turned into a media room. A sports/masculine theme is hinted at but the room is now inviting for a family to enjoy, or even non-sports enthusiasts!

Burgundy wall covering is removed and a neutral palette of colors is used throughout the room.

Sports collections, and “bar-inspired” decor is replaced with sophisticated decor that still welcomes entertaining & relaxing.

Display areas are kept contained in bookshelves in specific areas and not placed randomly around the room. Less clutter and more organized!

I loved this home staging challenge because as home owners we love personalizing, but especially in those rooms that are dedicated to one hobby like a man-cave, these spaces can be the reason a home buyer doesn’t like your home. This before and after shows you that you can transform any room into an enjoyable space for any potential home buyer!

Best of 2012 – #3

How to Create the Ideal Garage Man Cave

If you can’t find a space that is your own, and every space in your home is dedicated to someone else in your home, a garage man cave may be the answer. Where can you go to sit and sip on a beer and watch the big game? Luckily, some very ingenious designers have come up with ways of turning that grubby, tool-filled garage space into a modern man cave! How do you do it? Do you know the materials you need? If you need flooring inspiration, then these tips can help.

What does your ideal garage man cave look like?

[ad#co-1]

Here are a few ways for you to create your own garage man cave:

Clean it up:

First, you will need to do some dirty work. Cleaning up and organizing the garage is key to making the space comfortable and feel like a real room. Install some shiny steel shelves to organize all your tools and belongings. You may also consider hiding your tools behind closed doors; lockers or cupboards can be used to hide all the utilitarian garage tools, making it visually appealing. Install wall hooks for rakes, shovels and bicycles. By making the most of wall storage, you can create an open, uncluttered floor space.

Flooring:

Now that the garage is cleaned up, you will need to do something with the floor in order to make it feel like any other room in your home. There are so many options! One of the least expensive options is outdoor carpeting such as outdoor area rugs that are available at most home hardware stores. Most hardware stores also carry a garage floor concrete paint that can really gloss-up and seal the floor. On the more expensive side, there are “garage guys” in most cities whose sole occupation is revamping garages into the ideal man cave; these companies usually have different flooring systems that they install.

Create a garage man cave that is ideal for you

Image via

Man cave garage ideas

At this point in the garage renovation, the sky is the limit. How would you like to “pimp your garage”? Of course, you will need the largest TV possible. Ensure that your tv has the perfect place to sit . Along with the television, you will need comfortable seating for yourself and a few drinking buddies, and NO the seating cannot be lawn chairs! Think leather recliners.

When it comes to televisions, surround sound stereos, and lighting, you may need to hire an electrician to ensure you have enough sockets ̶ electricians can also install some really neat track lighting to brighten the space.

Overall, use your imagination. Before revamping the garage, make a list of the all the things you would like to use it for – watching TV, playing pool with the guys, or just a quiet place to read the paper. Whatever your needs, the garage can be turned into another functional room in your home.

Could a garage addition be a wise investment for your home? Putting money into home improvements can be kind of hit or miss when it comes to seeing a return on investment. For example, a modern kitchen or bathroom makeover stands to net you a considerable percentage of return if you sell your home soon after. But installing new flooring, while potentially making your home more attractive to buyers, probably won’t show any appreciable return on the sum you put into it. The point is that you need to be careful about how you invest your money where renovations are concerned if you want to get that money back down the line. Although you can enjoy upgrades in the meantime, you don’t want to end up selling your house for less than you spent on it. So when it comes to the question of whether or not to complete a garage addition, here are a few things to consider.

Will your home benefit from a garage addition?

Image via: Houzz

[ad#co-1]

Does your garage addition add to your home square footage?

The first thing to note is that this is probably the only home addition that won’t add square footage to your property listing. Sadly, the garage is not calculated in your total square footage; that honor goes only to potentially livable space. So if you’re looking to increase the size of your house for listing purposes, adding on to the garage won’t cut it. You’re better off expanding the kitchen or adding another bedroom and bathroom. That said, you might not necessarily be going after the bump you’ll get from extra declared space for your house. It might be that you currently have no garage or that the one you do have is simply inadequate for the needs of the average modern homeowner, in which case such an addition could definitely have benefits.

Garage addition can add to buyer appeal

For one thing, adding or expanding your garage space could make your property much more attractive to prospective buyers. Not only will you enjoy it while you remain in the home, but it’s not the type of renovation that will lose value over time. For example, suppose you do a complete overhaul of your kitchen utilizing the most popular trends of the day for colors, materials, and so on. If you don’t sell within a few years of your upgrades they will become outdated, negating some of the value and reducing your return on investment. Not so with a garage. Carports and workspace are utilitarian and they will remain useful indefinitely. Since you won’t be going much further than a concrete foundation and basic drywall there are no materials to get outdated. This means the garage will virtually retain the same value for as long as the structure holds up.

Weigh the pros and cons of adding a garage addition to your home

Image via: Changrit

Weigh the pros and cons of a garage addition

Now, the problem is that a garage simply won’t show the same return on investment that other upgrades might. If you add two new parking spaces to the garage you’re certainly making the property more useful and attractive to the average buyer. But you’re also reducing the size of the yard, for example. And you aren’t necessarily giving them something that they need. They could just as easily park their cars on the street or in the driveway, although they would likely prefer structure to stave off the elements.

Drivers know they can get discount online insurance quotes rather than going to big name providers, and homeowners know that they can pay less for the house next door if you jack up your asking price to cover the cost of a garage addition. So you might want to weigh the pros and cons before you get started. If you plan to use the garage yourself for several years, you’ll get some use value out of it for sure. But if you’re planning to sell in the near future and you’re looking to do some upgrades to improve both the value of your home, this may be one project to leave to the buyer.

If you have a dad that spends a majority of his time tinkering around in his garage or man cave, your holiday shopping just became significantly easier.

Here are five great gifts for the garage-loving dad this holiday season.

What gifts are on Dad’s holiday list?

Image via: schappacherwhite.com

[ad#co-1]

1. Speakers

If your dad works in garage on nights and weekends, there’s a good chance he would want to enjoy some music while working. Thankfully, there are plenty of options to buy this year.

Your first option are the Axiom Garage Speakers. These speakers are covered in a tough crosshatch metal (so they’ll fit in great with his tool box!) and offer a great sound. Of course, you’ll need an amplifier and speaker to put out a sound, but this is a great start.

Your next option is a bit more tech-savvy: Bluetooth speakers.

For $300, you can buy the Bose SoundLink, which allows him to stream music from his iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch — or any other smartphone that has Bluetooth. While the Bose SoundLink looks small, it packs a big sound, with boomy basses and crisp trebles.

2. Television

A TV seems like a logical choice for the dad who spends a lot of time in his garage, but don’t go out and buy the latest flatscreen.

Because the garage isn’t as insulated and protected as your home, you’re going to want to buy an all-weather LCD television. You don’t need a large screen, but they do make these weather-proof television up to 46-inches.

SunBrite TV is the LG and Samsung of all-weather televisions. And while these TVs are expensive (between $1,800 and $5,500) they are designed to withstand rain, dirt, insects, scratches and drastic temperature changes.

As mentioned, this is a big investment, but when dad is working on the weekends, he’ll be able to take in the big soccer game.

Buy gifts for dad’s man cave

Image via: modenrgroupaz.com

3. A Portable Work Station

Because most garages are designed to store a car, lawn mower and tools, your dad doesn’t have a ton of space to work on various projects. That’s why a portable work station is a great gift idea.

There are plenty of great options for portable work stations, but some of my favorites are made by Black & Decker. The Black & Decker WM425 ($90) can hold up to 550 pounds and can adjust in height, allowing you to work on various woodworking projects and more.

When you’re done, simply fold up your workstation and store it away.

4. Personal Garage Car Lift

Most dads who are handy around their cars are likely to change their own oil. And while they might look manly rolling from under their car, covered in grease, it’s not the most comfortable activity.

That’s where this unique gift comes into play: Go out and buy a personal garage car lift.

These lifts can fit in most garages with a normal ceiling height. It raises the car (or truck!) to a height that makes oil changes and any undercarriage work significantly easier.

While this can be an expensive project, most auto lift companies offer some kind of financing deal.

If your dad is a gear head, this is guaranteed to be his favorite Christmas gift of all time.

Help dad love his garage!

Image via: pbelemental.com

5. New Lighting

This inexpensive and subtle gift can make a world’s difference when it comes to your garage. Why? Because most garages are fairly dark. For Christmas, brighten up your dad’s garage.

You can get creative with this project, but track lighting is a popular option that offers a modern light. You don’t want to stop there, though.

Dad works with tools and on cars, so you’ll want a portable spotlight on wheels that your dad can easily roll around while working on his various projects.

Your home’s garage doesn’t have to be that part of the house that you’re not proud of — it can actually be the focal point of your home.

Now there’s a few different ways to turn your garage into a work of art, as this title suggests. It can mean a beautifully painted garage door, or maybe a secret oasis inside. All of that is up to you, but here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

Want a new look for your garage?

Image via

[ad#co-1]

A beautiful paint job

Any garage can look like a million bucks and totally transform your house for the better, making it the envy of the neighborhood.

You have a few options when it comes to painting your garage door. You can pick a brand new color that gives your house that new, modern look or you can really go outside the box and paint some kind of mural on it.

In fact, there are some garages out there that really mess with people’s minds when they drive by. Check this one out below (Photo credit: Dornob.com):

That example might be over the top for you — but it’s certainly entertaining to see!

If you’re going to give your garage just a basic paint job, consult with paint technicians at places like Home Depot or Lowes, or if you have a local home improvement store you like. Remember to keep things in mind such as the color of the trees and the color of your house. There are many different color combinations that make your house look absolutely stunning.

But remember: There are also many options that can make it look hideous. Choose carefully, consult paint professionals, neighbors and friends to make the best choice.

An interior beauty

The other way you can turn your garage into a work of art is by transforming the inside. If you don’t mind not storing your car in your garage, or if you have additional garage space for it, you can truly make the garage a relaxing place in your home.

The key to a sexy garage is the flooring. A shiny wood floor, while expensive, shows people you’re serious about your garage. If you own a sports car, it will also look excellent on a beautiful floor.

Next you need plenty of lights. Most garages have only one or two lights to illuminate the place. Install track lighting across a stretch of the ceiling. The more light the better — plus if you store tools or other small things, you’ll appreciate the extra lighting.

Photos are the next must-have in your garage. This is actually a perfect opportunity to hang up some great family photos. These are the photos that you have stored away on your computer or only have a 4×6 print of in hand. You would never blow these photos up to a larger size because you simply don’t have that kind of room in your house, but your garage is perfect for those photos. Go larger than 8×10 — think 20×30. There are plenty of great online print shops that can print that large on a budget.

And finally, have a place to sit and relax. This is your new oasis after all. Don’t scrimp on just a lawn chair, find a chair that’s really relaxing and make sure there’s a side table to rest your drink on next to it.
