Fall Decor: Recycling Sweaters for Pumpkin Craft (Video)

Supplies

Sweaters

Embroidery floss

Filling

Twigs

Needle (with a big eye)

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Embellishments (leaves, twine, ribbon, dried twigs with berries etc.)

Instructions

1. Cut the sweaters so you will get parts that are straight on both ends. Sleeves are the easiest for this project, since you won’t need to sew them together to get a ‘tube’ as the other parts.
2. Thread the floss (choose the same color floss as the sweaters) through the needle eye and make a simple knot at one end.
3. Turn the sleeve inside out. Make a running stich around the one end of the sleeve. When you’re done, pull the thread to close the opening. Make a knot to secure it. This part will be the bottom of your pumpkin.
4. Turn the sleeve right side out. Fill the sleeve with enough filling, until it gets a round, plumb pumpkin-like shape.
5. Now it’s time to close the upper end of the sleeve, the same way you closed the bottom one. Just use the needle and floss and make a running stich around the end of the sleeve. Pull it enough so it will leave a small hole and make a knot to secure everything.
6. Use another piece of floss and the needle to make lines to the filled sleeve so it looks more like a pumpkin. To do that, just make a stich on the top of your filled sleeve (near the small opening), pull the floss to the bottom of the sleeve and secure it there, making sure that the ‘pumpkin’ clinches a little. Repeat this a few times so you’ll get the finished look. This part is optional, but it adds to the appeal of your final product.
7. When done, glue a small piece of twig with hot glue into the opening on top of the pumpkin. You can wrap the twig (stem) with twine and use hot glue to secure it, to get another look.
8. Now to the finishing touches. Add leaves, berries or ribbon to the stem of the pumpkin to give it the look you want.

So, there you have it. It’s a really easy project to make Fall Decor, but if you want to make it even easier, here are a few suggestions. You can use faux pumpkins to avoid the need of stuffing the sleeve with filling. Just take the faux pumpkin, cut off the stem (optional) and ‘dress’ the pumpkin with the sweater sleeve. Continue as described above. Another option is to use rubber bands or hot glue to secure the ends of the sleeve, so you could avoid the sewing part altogether. Just try what you like more and go for it. Make a number of sweater pumpkins to adore a corner of your home or even your porch.

3 Easy Projects to Decorate your Home this Fall

1. Paint decorative acorns

In many places, acorns are found in abundance this time of year. They are beautiful for filling clear vases or candle holders and to use to make napkin holders, place cards, wreaths or any other Fall-themed decoration you can think off. If you are going to gather your own acorns, make sure to pick up only freshly fallen ones. Then soak them in water for some time to remove dirt. Next, tap them dry with a towel and place them in one layer on a baking sheet and bake them for an hour or so at 220-250 degrees. This will help killing any bugs hiding inside. After that procedure, the acorns are ready to be used. You can spray paint them or apply metallic paint with a small brush. You can also choose to paint only the caps or even to apply some glue and glitter on them. Of course, applying a layer of vegetable oil on the shells to give them a nice shine can be enough to have a beautiful natural decoration item, without any artificial help. You can also use a glue gun to glue on little pieces of twine to make hanger and hang the acorns from branches.

2. Make a Fall Wreath

To make a fall wreath is one of the easiest ways to get a stunning and long lasting decoration item that can be both displayed on the front door to welcome guests or inside the home to decorate a room. First you must decide the character of the wreath and choose the items you want to use to make the wreath. The next step is to choose how big you need your wreath to be. Take a foam wreath and cover it with sheet moss for a natural look, using your best friend in crafts: the glue gun. Next, take some fabric, like burlap ribbon, and loop it over the wreath so you create the hanger. Now you can use the glue gun and some florist picks if needed, to secure the items you choose. Fill the gaps with moss, fabric or smaller decorative items and you are done.

3. Recycle Jar Lids to Create a Pumpkin

To make this easy project you don’t really need a lot. Just a few jar lid bands (about 20 should be enough), cinnamon or wooden sticks, yarn or twine, burlap pieces and spray paint, if you want to paint the lids into a different color. If you do want to paint the lids, paint them and let them dry completely first. Choose yarn or twine in a similar color to the lids. You can choose any color, like orange, yellow or even white or black. You can also paint or draw on the lids. For something more sophisticated, think about wrapping twine or a strip of an old book page around each lid. When your are done preparing the lids, run a piece of yarn or twine trough them and tie it, making sure that all the lids are facing in the same direction. Arrange the lids so they remind the shape of a pumpkin. Now add the cinnamon sticks to the middle as stems and cut two pieces of burlap in order to have some leafs. To secure them, you can use a few drops of glue with the glue gun.

No-Carve Pumpkin Ideas and Halloween Decor

Fall Flowers

You don’t have to remove the pulp for these pretty pumpkins. Using a clay-loop tool (see below) allows you to design a cool look that lasts longer than conventional carved pumpkins. We love this floral design, which uses a different colored plug as the base, and etching for the petals.

Sketch your design with a washable marker. Use your thumb to stabilize your hand when cutting the design with a clay-loop tool. This easy carving technique is almost mess-free — no gutting required!

Boo-tiful Pumpkins

When illuminated, the apple corer holes emit an eerie glow. This big “Boo!” looks like it took hours, but with the help of a plunger-type apple corer, large letters are easy to knock out. Be sure you get the scary point across by using a serrated knife and a metal biscuit cutter to create a simple exclamation mark.

Use a plunger-type apple corer for double-duty decorating. Leave the holes open for a glowing look, or place the punch in a different colored pumpkin.

Candy Corn Painted Pumpkins

Too big to pop in your mouth, these candy corn-look painted pumpkins still look good enough to eat. Use cone-shape pumpkins and spray-paint to create these Halloween treats.

Caterpillar Pumpkins

Anything that makes your skin crawl is great fare for Halloween. Here, pumpkins go to great lengths to form a caterpillar. Paint pumpkins melon green, and paint their stems black. Decorate the body with adhesive-felt dots, and denote the head with a pair of googly eyes and curled pipe cleaner antennae. Arrange the pumpkins in a creepy, crawling S shape.
