Tips for Sticking to your Design Project Budget
Know your Design
As a general rule of thumb it is good to know what you want to accomplish with your new design and what the end result of the design should be. At times, it is understandable to not know all of the fine details, but having a good sense of what you want before you begin shopping and looking at all of the furniture, accessories, or finishes that you may think you want can have a huge impact to staying on target when a budget is involved. If you do not have a good base for your design, it can cause a lot of changes throughout the entire project making it cost more in the end.

Repurpose
If your budget is not enough to cover everything you want for your project, consider what items you can opt to have repurposed to fit your design. Although you may not get everything new, this is a great way to keep the costs down and keep you on target for staying within the budget. Items that may be considered repurposed or refaced would be cabinets, seating upholstery, or wood furniture pieces.

Be Realistic
From the very start of your project be realistic by understanding potentially how much all of the components of your project may cost and build a budget that is going to be within range to accomplish. Even if you are not sure on how much something may cost, call for a quick quote on what it would typically cost. In addition, consider a backup plan and build a little extra into the budget for those items that may be unexpected but necessary to make the design a success such as old piping within your home that may need to be replaced or electrical wiring. Although these are not the items we tend to think about when starting a project, they can be killers to your design budget overall if you do not think of them ahead of time as possibilities that could occur.

Whether you are in the middle of your design projects or thinking about starting a new project within your home, planning, understanding your limits, and considering some different and creative options are ways you can avoid having a dream project turn into a nightmare in a hurry. It is never too late to backtrack and implement some of these tips to ensure you stay on target for the remainder of your project.
