Creating Spooky Halloween Chalkboard Sign Crafts

Entry #1737, October 19, 2012

This week, I thought it would be neat to incorporate a popular decorating trend into a Halloween decorating project: a decorative plaque or sign with popular sayings on them seem to be everywhere right now. In my own home I have a sign in the kitchen that says, ‘With every rising of the sun, think of your life as just begun’. I wake to this sign every morning while sipping on my coffee and use it as a reminder that each day is a new day.  Another popular sign that you may see in bedroom is, ‘Always kiss me goodnight’.

If you have bought any of these trendy signs, then you know that they will run you around $25 to $45 dollars. Let’s make one of our own signs, and better yet, make one where we can change the phrase on it whenever we want. This way we can make a sign that says something scary such ‘Enter if you dare’ and then change it to another popular saying after Halloween is over.

Halloween craft for your door

By using an old cabinet door and then painting it with chalk board paint ̶ you can easily make your own sign! Here are a few helpful tips to get you started:

Go to your local thrift store.

These stores are full of old wood cabinet doors and drawers of every possible size, and they are very inexpensive (usually around $5). Once you find a door that suits your needs, you simply have to bring it home and lightly sand it to get the surface ready for chalkboard paint.

The chalkboard paint can be purchased at most hardware stores; paint a few coats and allow to dry. In order to hang your sign you will need some picture wire and a couple of eyelet screws, then just attach the screws and wire to the back of your wooden sign. Here comes the real fun….

Use your imagination and write a saying or phrase on your sign.

Hang your sign in your entry way or covered front porch and write away with chalk. How about writing sayings such as, ‘The Witch is in’, ‘BOO!’, or ‘Witches Welcome’ etc…

If you prefer, you can make smaller signs with smaller pieces of wood. Position these smaller signs on your dining table or buffet table. These small signs can be displayed on a painter’s easel and with your chalk you could write your Halloween menu or ‘Witches Brew’.

The best part of this craft is that it is reusable! Simply wipe off your chalk saying and rewrite a new one. Reuse your sign for every occasion – birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, or just use it as an everyday sign that displays your favorite saying. Maybe put it in your kitchen and remind everyone to ‘Kiss the cook’.
