DIY Winter Crafts – How to Make a Cute Draft Blocker

Entry #3262, February 14, 2014

Being in the heart of winter, everyone is looking for ways to keep the cold out and the warmth inside. But if a house has windows and doors that are not well insulated, cold drafts can occur. So to save your heat and therefore energy and money, here is an inexpensive, fun and even decorative way to stop those drafts: make your own draft blockers! A DIY winter crafts is great for those boring days indoors and makes a functional way to keep out drafts.

The principle for making any draft blocker is basically the same. You can choose between fabric, old sweater’s arms, old denim’s or other pants legs, socks or womens tights. Choosing fabric has the benefit of being able to make a draft blocker that fits completely into the décor of the room, but it will need to be sewed properly. Same goes for most of the other ideas. If you don’t want to sew, than the easiest way to go is using a pair of women’s tights. They come in a great variety of colors and prints, so it will be easy to find one that you like.

You will need:

  • 1 pair women’s tights
  • Filling material: You can choose between dried/uncooked rice, dried/uncooked beans, kitty litter, sand, or some synthetic filling material
  • For decoration (optional): felt, fabric glue, googly eyes or buttons, scissors

How to make it:

  1. First, cut off one of the tights’ leg. If you want, you can cut off the tights’ foot above the heel, also. If you do that, sew one end closed or make a knot.
  2. Now, fill the tight with your filling material. Use a funnel to make it easier. Remember to leave some space so you’ll be able to sew the other end closed or make a knot.
  3. Once you have filled it, make the knot or sew the end closed, so the filling material can’t get out.
  4. Finally, it’s decorating time! Get creative by gluing on googly eyes or buttons for the eyes, tongues and/or ears for a cute animal draft blocker.

If you have cold drafts in your house, it’s about time to make some of these easy and lovely draft blockers! What winter crafts are you making
